This game is pretty recent on my game time, I think since 2020 I been playing this game. Another crossover which I enjoyed for a while and such. I didn’t even know it was a thing until I’ve played the neo geo pocket game and I am just saying, is this game any good for a console or should it just stay in the console? This is Capcom vs Snk : Millennium Match 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast (emulation).

Story : 8

The story is about a tournament, financed by the Masters Foundation and the Garcia Financial, where the greatest fighters in the world sign up for a chance of glory as two of the biggest franchises of the time come together to see who’s the strongest in the world. What they don’t know is the evil that’s hidden behind the scenes.

The intro of the game catches the viewers eyes with “Everybody rumored, no one believed” with the background audio repeating “Capcom vs Snk” and it was a crossover long awaited (the first being on the NeoGeo pocket if I recall).

Story is an 8 out of 10. A tournament bringing two franchises together is a great idea but the whole evil thing, still overused.

Graphics : 8

The intro presents outer space with the Milky Way and it starts traveling past planets and stars until its arrival to earth when the logo appears with 3D skyscrapers. It’s an eye popper and the planets and such look pretty good. Waiting for a bit does show the high scores and character models.

Character models are a mixed bag. The SNK models look pretty good and consistent to one another where they work well with the gameplay. Capcom characters… they’re a mixed bag. Players like Ryu and Ken have models similar to the snk side but when you go after some like Sakura, Zangief or Vega, they have a more Alpha 3 look to it and it doesn’t fit the whole aesthetic. I mean if they could make new models for M. Bison, Ken and such characters, why not all? The animation is pretty smooth and movement doesn’t feel janky. Special moves look fresh without any exaggeration, with some moves look somewhat having depth and details with the hit marks looking flashy.

The stages are beautifully well made. Two dimensional stages with a pseudo three dimensional background for most that offer depth and layers while fighting. Some of the stages are just amazing (the dragon casino looking stage and the train station) and what gives it more flair is that the lighting is pretty good. See some lighting at some stages that reflect off the character or the screen (sunlight hitting the “lens” giving the lens flare effect or a red glow on the character while fighting in front of a fire) the game emphasize more on camera work as it seems when playing the game. Background models of people have a more watercolor or pastel look to it to a more natural looking model similar to the fighters, some even more of a realistic look of faces and such. It depends on the stage. Stages are also interactive in some ways like opening doors and construction area vibrating from the force of the fights as players hit the floor. What makes this unique though, every stage has a different opening before the fight starts and characters may have unique interactions with one another depending on who. (Ken and Terry or Ryu with Kyo).

The start up you see in the background previous videos of SNK and Capcom from Fatal fury to an animated film and depending on the groove you select you get treated with two different styles of art. One side from Capcom and the other from SNK.

Overall the graphics is a good 8 out of 10. Reusing assets from Capcom’s side is lazy but everything else just seems to mesh well with each other.

Sound : 9

The game’s music is energetic. Bit of techno and upbeat rock music helps make this game feel lively and fast paced. No compression or audio deformities issues or none that I could hear.

The character audio is a bit of a mixed bag. Snk characters sound like they usually do with their King of Fighters audio, which is okay. Capcom characters though, some sound deeper than the previous games with Sakura and Ken being one of the more notable voices different. It’s not a big deal but it’s noticeable with most characters of Capcom while others still sound similar to the alpha series (Dhalsim for example). Sound effects and audio quality is also pretty good. There’s not much negative thoughts to sound.

It’s a 9 out or 10. Everything is pretty good, just short of perfect.

Addictive : 7

The game is pretty good and fun to play but with some lacking content and a bit of restrictions (later on) it hinders the potential of this game. If you’re okay with these limitations you can see some good hours of playtime through arcade or with against another player. There’s not much to say other than having a bit of combination of characters and play styles can help the game’s replay ability.

It’s a 7 out of 10. It’s fun to play for a while but limitations ruin the experience.

Difficulty : 8

The game is difficult to some understanding. On default settings the fights are pretty easy until you go farther as the stages progress. I’m just saying now, Ryu, most cheap character of the game and have to cheat myself to win against him. Some characters are just better than others and it shows when fighting the AI.

It’s a 8 out of 10. Game is easy at the start but skill is needed for later stages. Ryu is cheap to fight against.

Depth : 7

The game has a bit of depth with the gameplay. Starting the game you’re introduced to two styles of play. Capcom groove is the usual Alpha style 3 gauge special while the snk groove has a more one bar charge up special gauge. Choosing a groove also determines the character pics and whoever you choose to fight as (mostly Capcom or mostly snk) you have a final fight with either Geese or M. Bison. The controls are similar to most fighting games with a six button control scheme.

You can choose up to four players in a team and it’s really restrictive I’m not gonna lie. Each player has their own ranking by “ratio” and the higher the ratio, the more space they take from the allotted amount you’re given. From the Capcom side we got, in tiers.
1T - Sakura, Cammy, Dhalsim, Blanka. T2- Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Guile,Balrog, E. Honda, Zangief T3 - M. Bison, Vega, Sagat.
The Snk side are, also in tiers.
T1 - Benimaru, King, Vice, Yuri. T2- Terry, Mai, Orochi, Kyo, Raiden, Kim, Ryo, T3- Yamakazi, Regal, Geese.

The tiers determine how much players you can have on your team, up to four. With 1 tier takes one space, 2 tiers takes two, and three tiers taking three.

Game modes consists of the traditional arcade, facing 6 stages or different teams at random amounts with the final being either m. Bison or geese.

Vs mode is just a player vs player, not much else. While training is practicing a specific player.

The game is a team battle game (the amount depends on the ratio). Instead of it being a tag system like marvel vs Capcom it uses a more King of Fighters style of tag battle where it’s a 1v1 team battle until the team loses all its players. Simple enough. The game consists of a groove point system which increases with each hit that isn’t repeated or lowers by continuous blocking, I don’t know what the groove point system is for other than grading your skills so.

With the game you gain some points you can spend on in the secret shop. Secret shop allows you to buy some cosmetics changes (colors) and some other things to enhance the gameplay for a bit. Not much to it

Overall the depth is a 7 out of 10. If the ratio system was taken out it would’ve been great for the game to have dream teams instead of being restricted to this system. Lack of game modes and such makes it lack luster.

Overall this game is a great entry for the Snk and Capcom series which seems to continue for a while until its demise in the DS era. Wouldn’t see a sequel until the new millennium with some major upgrades. This game is more so a good way to ease in playing the series if you are unable to play the neogeo pocket of Capcom vs Snk. This is more so a leisure play or weekend fun if anything.
