Punch OUt is a popular video game franchise published by Nintendo. The game has introduced several characters. Bob Charlie is one of them. He appeared in Super Punch Out for SNES that is his only appearance to day, so lets learn about him.

Bob Charlie is a play of the late Reggae singer Bob Marley. This caused some controversy for Nintendo. I will explain about the controversy later. Of all the characters Punch Out has introduced this character is the most controversial.

Bob Charlie is from the Caribbean nation of Jamaica. His profile states he was a singer and dancer. He also started boxing mixing his dancing moves inside of the ring. He was known as the Jive King of Kingston Jamaica.

He had some success in the Boxing ring producing a record of 24 wins and 13 loses. He competes in the Major Circuit. He loves to dance with his fists in his own words.

He has a few attacks. He loves to dance around the ring saying woo before punching Mac (the boxer the player controls). When he starts moving around saying woo he is fixing to do his most dangerous attack. That is a dashing powerful uppercut. He will also try to quick jab the player. He also tries to fake the player out by dancing making the player think he is going to just dance before throwing an uppercut.

His weakness is that sometimes he dances around the ring to much. This leaves him open for quick jabs and powerful uppercuts. This probably how he lost some of his fights. In addition, it is probably what keeps him from moving up in the rankings.

Personality Wise: He loves to sing and dance. Before fights he says people who cannot feel rhythm are so lost do you have rhythm. If you are able to knock him out he will say you have got good rhythm lets box or dance again. He seems to be jolly as he loves to dance and box. His main focus though appears to be on his music and dancing. Even though he is Jolly he is not afraid to taunt the player. Sometimes he can be a little bit overconfident and a showoff. On the other hand, if he lands hits on you but you still knock him out. He will tell you lets have fun some more. As I mentioned to him the fight is about rhythm

Here are his stats from his profile

From: Kingston Jamaica
Height: not listed
Weight: 140 pounds

Record
Wins 24 wins
Loses 13 wins

As I mentioned the character caused some controversy after the game came out. A lot of Punch OUt Characters have some comical stereotypes, but usually there is no ill intent behind them. In the case of Bob Charlie he was based off of legendary singer Bob Marley. A lot of people felt like Nintendo was mocking the legendary singer in a negative way. By having Bob dance and shout woo. This is also indicated the way they designed Charlie's hair again identical to Bob Marley. Several gaming magazines stated "Punch Out has gave us some funny characters. But Bob Charlie nearly crosses the line. Nintendo took a legendary singer and made him a boxing character that was a very bad stereotype". Game pro stated "Charlie is one of those characters that you hope only appears in one game and is forgotten about". Other people thought the character fit nicely into the Punch OUt series of comical characters.

Indeed, it is easy to see why this character was the most controversial Punch Out character ever. Considering that it was a different time in the 1990's when this game was made and it still caused issues. That is probably the reason this character has never appeared again. Other Punch out characters have appeared in other games. Those that did not appear have been referenced. For example the Brusier brothers have not appeared since this game, yet they are referenced as great champions in other games. Charlie has never been referenced again, so its likely Nintendo does not want to go back down the road of bringing this character back anytime soon.

This concludes the biography on one of the controversial Punch Out Characters.
