Have you ever lost a pet? Did you ever get another one after it passed away?

Today my fiance's dog passed away around noon. He had a nice morning eating breakfast with us before I had to leave for work. My fiance told me she thinks he will die today, since his eyes were glazed over and he was acting strangely. He's been sick for a few weeks but we've been tending to him and trying to keep him as happy as possible. She stayed with him for an hour before going to bed (she works night shifts and sleeps during the day) and he went to sleep too, only he didn't wake up.
He wasn't in any pain seemingly, although I can assume he probably felt really ill considering his condition.
I only knew him for just less than a year, and she had him for 12, but I still feel like I've lost someone really important to me. He was a really intelligent dog and seemed to know his time was coming, but put on a face for us so we wouldn't worry. I feel worse for my fiance since she's known him for so long.
I know that he's watching over us now, and waiting for us in heaven.

I've lost quite a few pets over the years or moreso my grandma has but I was really attached to most of them there's been a few that really affected my heavily the first time was when I was in the hospital being diagnosed with diabetes my grandma called and told me her dog sissy had passed away and that was my favorite at the time I loved rolling down hills with her when I was super young so on top of my world being thrown upside down learning I now have some disease that I have to give myself shots 4 times a day for the rest of my life at the age of like 6 and then sissy dying while that was happening I broke down. While she lost more dogs over the next decade it wasn't until a few years ago when her pit bull and her mutt passed away in back to back months that it really affected me again she got them to replace the old group of dogs that sissy was a part of and I lived with her for over a year while she had the pit and the mutt so I was super attached to them and after they passed away I've truthfully avoided getting attached to the new dogs as I just don't wanna go through it again, though I've accidentally got attached to her cat she's got since all that so I guess I'm not really giving the dogs much a chance to win me over.

Losing a pet is a very difficult thing to happen to you. I have lost a few pets over the years mostly cats.

Earlier this year one of my cats Creamsickle "Creamy" died. He had cancer and died at the age of 14. Me and my parents were all sad when Creamy died.

Last year my oldest cat Blackie died. I knew it was coming due to Blackie's age as she was 24 years old. Blackie and Pirate were born in my backyard in 1998. They were from my neighbors next door cat. I asked my neighbor if I could have them and she said yes. In fact, she was going to ask me to take them. I Pirate and Blackie. Both lived long lives. I found Blackie deceased as she had died in her sleep at the age of 24.

Pirate, who was Blackies Brother, was one of the best cats. I know cat owners say that about there cats. But Pirate was special. I named him Pirate because when he was born it looked like he had an eye patch around his eye. A few years later I started wearing an eye patch over one of my eyes due to going blind in that eye at that time. Pirate would meow real loud for treats as he loved Temptations Treat. Sadly, Pirate would die of cancer at the age of 20 years old.

Windy was another one of my cats that died. Windy was a Siberian cat. She was full of spunk and was very active. One week I noticed she was very lethargic and not eating. Me and my parents took her to the vet. It turned out she had developed a terminal illness. She was gone at the age of 5.

I have lost other pets. I used to have two dogs Smoky a German Shepard and Jock a terrier mix. Smoky lived to be 14 and Jock was 22 when he died.

Pets are like family, it is always hard when they die and we have to say goodbye.

I am a Christian and I might be wrong for thinking this. But I think I will see my pets again one day.

drago: First off, I'm really sorry about your fiance's dog. That's rough, man. No matter how much time we get with them, it never really feels like enough. It's clear that dog was a trooper, trying to stay strong for you guys. Dogs have this crazy way of always trying to be there for us, even when they’re going through it themselves.

SonicOlmstead : dude, I'm feeling for you too. The universe really threw you a curveball when you were a kid, huh? Getting that news about Sissy while dealing with your own health... that’s rough . It’s natural to feel guarded about getting attached again. Animals, man, they have a way of wiggling into our hearts.

tornadocam : I'm tearing up reading about Blackie, Pirate, and Windy. They sound like some really special fur babies. The bond you have with them is so clear. That bit about Pirate and the eyepatch... it’s like he was meant to be with you.

cafeman55 : that hit hard. Losing Marisol and Daisy sounds heart-wrenching, and hearing your dad cry for the first time? That's a tough one. Shows how deep the bond with our pets goes, doesn’t it?

I think it's incredible that even in pain, we can come here and share these stories. Makes the world feel a bit smaller and kinder. Each of our pets was unique, and their memories live on in our stories and our hearts. Here's to hoping that time will heal the wounds, but keep the memories fresh.

I haven’t lost a pet yet but my dog is already at 4 years old. Being a half malamute half Great Dane I’m not sure how his life expectancy would be. I mean I know I shouldn’t be thinking about it but at times I just wonder because whenever I was at my lowest after a break up, I usually go to my dog for comfort and ask myself just random thoughts, one being how long will he be with me (he is the runt of the litter when I got him) and well I mean I don’t really like thinking about it. I don’t know it’s just when people say “bigger dogs usually live 8-12 years” I think whether he’s in his midlife years or that’s just a myth and I really don’t know how I would handle it once he’s gone from my life…. I mean I cherish the memories with him right now and all, without him I don’t even know if I would’ve past my obsession on having my ex back.

Zachariah: Thank you so much for the kind words. Yes Me and Pirate where meant for each other. Even though he has been gone now for 5 years I still miss him. They were special fur-babies. They each had their own personality. I miss them all.

It's one of the hardest things, I find. I find a small amount of comfort in knowing that my dogs do not think about the future and dwell on death. One day, they just stop existing, and up until that moment, they are living in the present. It's almost like a life lesson when I have a pet die.

I miss them dearly, but I also realize they lived in the best way possible: enjoying every moment as if it was the only thing that existed.
