Mega Man 4 was a popular game back in the day. Several hacks have been made of Mega Man 4. Roll-Chan 4 is a hack of Mega Man 4. The main difference is you get to play as Proto Man and Mega Man's sister Roll. I will be doing a review of this game.

Story-9

The story is identical to the original MM4. It has been changed to accommodate Roll as the main character. The story starts off how Dr. Wily turned evil and Dr. Light modified Mega Man and Roll into fighting robots to counter Dr. Wily. Then the story shows how Roll shattered Wily's plans 3 times. But this time there is a new threat. Dr. Cossack has sent 8 new robot masters to conquer the world and to defeat Roll. Roll heads out to stop Cossack. The question is who is Dr. Cossack why is he doing this? Roll heads out along with her robotic cat Tango to get to the bottom of this.

I give the story a solid 9 rating. When I first played the original MM4 it seemed like it was offering something new and different. I actually fought there was a new bad guy. This hack keeps that feeling.

Graphics and Controls: 10

The original MM4 had awesome graphics and controls. The stages are nice and colorful. This game is no different. Roll uses her classic NES graphics and not her graphics from future games. To me that makes it feel like I'm playing a classic Mega Man game. Now, the colors have been slightly altered to reflect on the main character being Roll. Still, they are well balanced. The stages play very well. I did not notice a lag in this game at all. It was nice to play a hack without any lags.

The controls are almost flawless for a hack. In fact, they are largely the same as the original game. I did not find myself fighting with the controls. The controls are not going to cause you to get hit or fall into a pit. Thus, I give the graphics and controls an awesome 10.

Sound: 10

For me the game really shines in the sound department. The original game had an awesome sound to it. The sounds were largely kept. I love the rocking tunes in this game. I often want to pause the game and listen to the music. Second, Roll charging her buster is a very nice sound. It lets the player know they are fixing to fire a powerful blast. Enemies also make sounds in this game. Overall, it does not get much better than this. That is why I give the sound a 10.

Addictiveness or replay value 10

Mega Man 4 was one of my favorite NES games. I played that game a lot when I first got way back int he day. This game is also one that I play through again and again. It is nice to get to play as Roll. As I mentioned it is something new even though this is a hack. The music, story and graphics make this a highly addictive game. Also the amount of depth is also nicely done. Therefore, I give the replay value a 10.

Depth-9

Mega Man games are known for their depth. This one is no exception. Every stage has secrets to find. There are lots of items to collect as well as power ups. Moreover, the stages are also long, but not too long. This is also a game that you will not be able to beat in a short amount of time. You have the 8 robot masters to beat. Then you have two fortresses to beat. I do not give the depth a perfect rating for one reason. In this game you can revisit the stages. In fact, often times you will need to return to a stage with a different weapon to get all the items. Since you can revisit the stages you don't have to worry about missing an item and not being able to go back and get it or find it. On the other hand, you will need to do a lot of searching to get all the items. Therefore, I give the depth a solid 9.

Difficulty 8

This game can be difficult. Some of the robot masters love to just punish you with their attacks. Enemy placement can be a problem. Enemies love to knock you into the pits. In addition, some enemies will jump out from the pits to knock you down in them. Enemies will also try to gang up on you. The fortress stages can be tricky.

However, the game can be somewhat generous. Some of the weapons can be charged to deliver a powerful attack. Roll can also charge up her buster to take out enemies quicker. The game seems to give you energy tanks and extra lives. The power ups also help you too.

This is one of those games that is difficult, but it is doable. It can challenge your skills and reflexes. Also challenges your ability to dodge. However, the game does help you out. That is why I do not think the difficulty is 9 or 10 level. Therefore, I give the difficulty a solid 8 out of 10. It is also the right difficulty as the difficulty is from the game itself and not fighting the controls.

Overall 9.6

I really loved the original Mega Man 4. I have played a lot of MM4 hacks. I often judge a hack does it play like the original, while also offering something new. I believe this game does all of that. It has a lot of original feel to it. But getting to play as Roll is something different. It is also fun to get to play as Roll as I mentioned.

I also like it how the maker/s of this game kept a lot of features from the original game. The tunes, graphics, sound, and depth. Those are what made the original game such a classic. I really enjoyed playing this one and I have played it multi times.

This would be a good game to introduce somebody too that is new to hacks. In fact, it would also be a good game to introduce somebody to the Mega Man franchise. If your a fan of Mega Man this is also a game for you. I highly recommend this hack. The difficulty is just about right and is similar to most Mega Man games.

Overall, I give this game a solid 9.6 rating. You cannot make a much better hack than this. This also completes my review.
