Waiting for Persona 5 Royal to finally come to the Switch has been quite the adventure but it's been worth the wait. I don't want to talk about the game too much because I've already talked about Persona 5 as a whole way too much, but I do want to talk about how this version of the game is the way that you experience Persona 5 Royal.
The game itself is one of the best RPG's of all time. The game has an amazing soundtrack and a great voice cast, fantastic visuals, a great story, and legendary gameplay mechanics.
But the question is why should you choose the Switch version of Persona 5 Royal over the original PS4 version of the game or the other ports? There are three things that I think make this the definitive way to play the game. One of these isn't restricted to the Switch version and can be found on any of the ports but the other two are limited to the Switch, even though they may be a case by case basis.
The first thing is that the game comes with a lot of extra content that was previously released and it includes content that was both free and paid. If you've already played the game but never got around to getting any of the extra content, it might be worth it to some people to upgrade for that alone. You don't need to play specifically on the Switch to get all of the extra content, but that is one of the reasons to upgrade beyond the base PS4 version of Persona 5 Royal.
The second reason that the Switch version is the way to go is the most obvious because that's the portability aspect of the game. Up until last year, portability was one of the biggest aspects of the Persona franchise. All the older games were on the PSP, the Vita had Persona 4 Golden and Persona 4 Dancing All Night, and the 3DS had both of the Persona Q games. But portability basically ended until the Switch started getting games like Persona 5 Strikers and it was a welcome return.
I probably wouldn't have even gotten into the series at all if the older games weren't on handheld platforms. When I was younger, I never really viewed Persona as a game where I wanted to be stuck in front of the TV for hours. All the hours I spent with Persona 4 Golden was while I was going back and forth between school and i had so much fun with it. If you only play your Switch in docked mode, then it won't really help you much, but if you do a lot of travelling, then being able to play Persona 5 Royal wherever you are is a huge advantage.
The third aspect is the one that's fully on a case by case basis because this one only applies to you if you have an OLED Switch. The game looks and runs great on both the regular Switch and the Switch Lite but on the OLED, it's a whole other experience. In some cases, playing in handheld mode on an OLED Switch is better than playing on a PS4 or even PS5. No matter hos powerful of a console you have, the visuals will always be dictated by the type of screen that you're playing the game on.
If you have a PS5 but are playing it on your average $100 to $200 TV, the performance and speed will be amazing but you'll be seeing the same visuals as if you were playing on a PS4. Unless you have an OLED or 4K TV which is expensive, an OLED Switch screen will look better. On top of that, Persona 5 Royal is one of the games that suits the OLED screen the most. There are many games that look much better on the OLED screen but with it's fantastic animations and amazing color and contrasts, the jump from regular to OLED for Persona 5 Royal is beautiful.
The game itself is amazing but the Switch version makes the experience even better and it's worth paying the $60 again if you've already played it on the PS4. My overall grade for this version of the game is a 9.4 out of 10 and it ended up being one of my top 3 Switch games of 2022.
