So yeah. I've heard a lot of debate about this topic. A lot of my friends believe Final Fantasy 8 was the better of these two released, while the rest of my friends (and me included xD) believe Final Fantasy 7 happened to be the best one out there. So which is your preferred choice? If you don't like either of them, and prefer another FF game, simply choose "Other". Thank you!

It's not really a fair poll because even though FF8 is a far better game with a better storyline, better graphics and more difficulty everyone will vote FF7 for a few reasons that I have mentioned elsewhere.

To paraphrase myself:
For many people FF7 was the first RPG they ever played so they think it's the best ever for sentimental reasons.
Others never try another RPG because they think that FF7 was a fluke and no other RPG could possibly be good, because RPGs are for nerds.
Yet others buy into the hype that was put out about it and surrounds it.
Then you have the weirdos that become obsessed with one facet of the game and don't have any taste (ie Cloud or Sephiroth fans).

All in all most FF7 fans will say something untrue that they beleive to be true, ie "its the hardest game ever", "it has the best monsters", "best soundtrack", etc.

I agree with DH, I know some people who love Cloud so much and have never even played FF7. I do believe that both games are good in their own right, and I can't pick which one is more fun to play since they're so different and both super fun.

I loved FF 4 perosonally it had a good story line,half-decent characters, and it isn't that widely known like FF7 or FF8.

thanks for the extensive analysis Corey

I've got to agree with DH. 8 is just better. Many people played 7 as their first RPG, or the first one that was "3D".... other something like that. It got a lot of hype for stuff like that but all in all it wasn't that great of a game. I enjoyed it don't get me wrong.... but I couldn't stand "Cloud". He was such a bad character.

Plus I just feel the need to spite the FF7 lovers by voting for 8

This was kind of an unfair vote for me, as I've never actually played Final Fantasy 8.

I did however, love Final Fantasy 7 (even though I think I'm about the only person to never play it long enough to get to the second disc that owns the game). It was the first RPG I'd actually ever played seriously, and was one of the first Playstation games I ever played when I was younger.

Personally, I've never played 7 or 8, but I have played all of the ones on the SNES, and I liked VI the most.

I can tell what I think- FF7, for me. But I say that from a certain veiw. First off, I've only played maybe the first quarter off FF8. I really don't know everything about the story other than watching my friend playing, so I shouldn't even be in this thread. FF8 was a bit more realistic that 7. Just a bit. Instead of getting gil from enemies there was an in-game payroll system based on your SeeD rank, which is pretty cool. The setting was in a better, lighter environment, I think, and had a feel that you were playing as a character in the life of his job. For a while, anyway. I guess the one thing you could say that sucked was the summon spells. We all know how dreadfully long those were, and it was excruciating if you had to use them a lot in certain fight such as Omega Weapon.

FF7 appealed to me more because it has a similar feel to FF8's theme, but stays with the basics of earning both XP and gil. The battle system was more fun to me since you had basic options plus the multitude of Limit Breaks. Equipping and making materia grow was a nice thing, too. I guess FF7 was a bit more relaxing for me to play than the time I spent with FF8. That, and for some reason FF8 felt a bit more confusing...

So, this is about which FF is better, 7 or 8? in my opinion, it's 7. first of all, the hero of 8, Squall, is too much like Cloud. (in personality) second of all, i just plain do not care for the junction/draw system. and lastly, you just can't compare any villian to Sephitroth. now, if you don't mind, i must go get a fire materia and NOT draw it from a random monster.

I chose FF7 because 8 was an abomination. The storyline made no sense. If Ultimecia is the all powerful time traveling witch she is supposed to be she could have just gone back in time and killed Squall while he was still a baby. Also, what's with the drawing magic out of the enemies? That's rediculous. And if you search for forever and can't find the items you need to upgrade your weapons you're screwed. Not to mention Squall had no personality what-so-ever all he did was sit in the corner and pout all of the time. Even when he and Rinoa actually had a romance going on his face never changed. He showed no emotion and no personality. Barrets's big toe had more personality.

lol, I just love when FF7 fans spout non sense, they just sound even more fanatical
Oh yeah, and Sephy is soooo hardcore, he's an obsessed mommas boy that wants destroy the world.
So cliche, apart from the oedipus complex he's is pretty much the same as alot of villians.
Also, someone obviously hasnt played the game, Ultimecia cant travel through time freely, she can only possess the bodies of certain people with certain powers.
At the time when Squall was a baby there wasnt anyone around with those abilities, Edea had dormant abilities at the time, but not active ones.
So Ultimecia couldnt possess her.

Here's a webcomic portraying the illogical arguments FF7 fans make and why they are so dumb sometimes

That's hysterical! Yeah the comic sums it up, but anyway I was going to say FF8 had the eyecandy and FF7 has better overall style.

DH's comic=win.
lol I'm so glad I read that. I have played FFVII now, unlike when I posted my last post on this thread a while back. And I have to say, it's nothing that spectacular. Sure it was a good game, but FFVI was in my opinion much better than VII, and now I'm pretty excited to download FFVIII on my PSP in about a week.

I think there both great rpg's.

FF7 is great for more casual gameplay and is a great game for a person to start out with in the series or even in the RPG genre. I loved the materia system that was used for magic and summoning and the more traditional growth sytem. I hate how fanboys act over it and how people will hate the game because of the way they act. I can't blame them though since it also makes me not want to play the game lol

FF8 is better for the more seasoned rpg player looking for a bit more of a challenge and complexity. Having to find parts to make your weapons made it fun and exciting to get new weapons since you have work more for them. Having GF compatibility, giving GF's special abilities, and the ability to junction magic brought some interesting gameplay. I didn't care much for the draw system though since I've always preferred the MP system more.
