Not many people will know about this (unless you've seen the US version... yuck). It is a VERY funny sci-fi comedy. Here is the basic story:

The crew of Red Dwarf were on a journey back to Earth from Ganymede. During the trip, the ship's core went meltdown and subjected the crew to a huge dose of lithium 2. The only survivors were Dave Lister, who was in suspended animation during the disaster, and his pregnant cat who was safelly sealed in the hold. Revived three million years later, Lister's only companions are a life form who eveolved from his cat, and Arnold Rimmer, a hologram of one of the dead crew.

At the begining of all the episodes in series 1 and 2 (except the first episode) Included the ships computer, Holly, bringing up a silly joke during a distress call.

Usually like: "I am Holly, the ship's computer with an IQ of 6000, that's the same as 6000 PE teachers

There's a U.S. version of Red Dwarf? I can't imagine that going down too well. I think the humour of red dwarf is quintessentially British. I have yet to see the disasterous US remake of The Office but as I rule I am not a fan of American adaptations of British comedies.
America has given us some of the best comedy of all time;
Simpsons/ Futurama/ Family Guy etc. etc. and I don't see why there's this need to fix a series that isn't broken and remake it for a US audience.
