Not much can be said about Sega's first Sonic game that hasn't already been said both good or bad. I thought I'd give my thoughts and opinions on it anyway. First released on June 23, 1991 as a pack-in title with the Genesis, Sonic quickly out shined Sega's old mascot Alex Kidd to become Mario's rival in the 16 bit wars. What Mario did for Nintendo Sonic did for Sega by becoming one of the most recognizable mascots of all time.   So, after that intro what do I think about the game as a whole? Well I've broken down my thoughts into 7 different categories ranging from 1-10. Let us begin shall we?   Graphics 9: First up is the graphics. While the game turned 27 years old this year it still looks fantastic. Not once did I encounter any slow down or graphical flickering throughout my entire play through. To say it holds up today graphic wise would be an understatement.   Sound 10: The games music along with its sound effects are still amazing to listen to over 20 years later. Now is it music that you will want to listen to outside of the game? No, not at all. But while you're playing it keeps you wanting to continue through the game.   Addictiveness 6: The game is somewhat addictive to play through. While its great to sit and play through it once back to back play troughs aren't really needed in my opinion.   Story 5: Not much of one if you ask me.But the story from what I could gather is Dr. Robotnik wants to steal the 7 Chaos Emeralds while trapping animals inside of robots and mechanical capsules. So its up to our hero Sonic to stop Robotnik get back the emeralds and save the animals.   Depth 4: The game isn't all that in depth. If you know what to do you can run through the game in about 90 minutes. I actually did time my run through from when I started to when I finished and it took me exactly an hour and a half.   Difficulty 5: I decided on putting the games difficulty in the middle. Its not to hard nor is it to easy either. It does get a bit challenging at later levels but nothing to hard that you can't get through.Overall 8.2: Overall I gave the game a rating of 8.2. Yeah my  other ratings were up and down. But overall I'd still rate the game pretty high. I still recommend it if You have never played the game before. Even if you have played it I still recommend it. But for me I am happy I played through it once. Once is all I need and I don't  have a desire to play through it again for now.  Final Thoughts: At the time Sega along with Sonic gave Mario and Nintendo a run for their money during the 16 bit wars. As a kid I was a Sega fan. That meant I was a fan of Sonic. Even if you were on Team Nintendo I still say Sonic the Hedgehog is still worth your time to play it.
