Hotline Miami - Playstation Vita / Playstation 3

Rare comes a game where you are not only frustrated with difficulty in a game, but you are also amused and intrigued with it. Rare comes an indie title with those 8 bit graphical designs that isn’t generic feeling, but rather a refreshing taste of artwork that only accentuates the style the game wants to give you. And rarest of all, it’s hard to come by a game that is not only intensely violent, but a game that’s not hindered by the edginess of having such tones. Hotline Miami is one of those games.

Hotline Miami is a top down action game made by Dennaton Games. The game sleekly yet
surely advertises a game filled with neon, blood, and action, and it pulls off just that. The game is riddled with enemies, weapons, and a lot of fast paced movements that make you think of the game as more of a puzzle than anything. This game is truly nothing to be messed with, and just every element of it contributes to its excellence.

Hotline Miami’s graphics are a throwback to the graphics of 80’s arcade games, mixed with the
silky neon colors and backgrounds that were lushly provided back in those days. The sprites all work perfectly, they look great, and it really pops when in 720p. The detail is great, and even though it’s an indie game, and almost every indie game has this 80’s 8 bit style to it, Hotline Miami stands out from them all and creates its own experience with the graphics, and really makes us feel part of what’s happening. The 8 bit graphics work perfectly in the game, and a lot of games should take influence from how well the style of the game works with how it looks. Hotline Miami looks perfect for the style of art and the decade it’s set in.

Hotline Miami’s Graphics – 10/10

Tearaway

Getting Crafty
Imagine a world made entirely of paper. Get Paper Mario out of your head, and imagine a vivid, beautiful land of trees, sculptures and animals, all hand made. That is Tearaway. It's a 3D platformer based on papercrafts and origami, in fact, you can make every item in the game with your own hands. Because of it's Little Big Planet connections, you best believe it's a magical and inventive game. The PS Vita is a land mine of hidden potential, and this game makes use of so much of it.

Graphics
---------

Tearaway is Papercraft. Even if it was on a system that didn't have much detail, it would still look nice, but we're talking about the Playstation Vita, a handheld console more powerful than the PS2. The HD resolution, hand in hand with the beautiful screen that everybody loves from the Vita, make the game look incredibly clear, and make the colors and textures of the paper pop out. The detail and beauty in this game are so inviting that it draws you into playing. The graphics are spectacular, they're definitely among the best on the Vita.

Paper is great. Cardboard is fantastic, and so are the graphics.

10/10

Sound
---------

If you can ever think about what paper sounds like, you got it. From paper tearing, from paper turning, folding, and tapping. There's drum sounds for back touching, and a soundtrack that seems very fitting and mischievous for your journey through the paper world. The trumpet sounds and the booming percussion make the world seem more adventurous and wonderful. The characters even have that classic Banjo Kazooie gibberish.

The only drawbacks are the camera sound, which goes off loud when you take a photo, unless you have headphones in. It's not a problem overall, but it isn't good for discreet gaming, especially if you're in public, people will likely think you're creeping up on them.

Trumpets are cool. Potential stalking charges? Not so much.

Beautiful Katamari

On the Rocks Beauty
Beautiful Katamari is an Xbox 360 exclusive title that was made alongside Katamari Forever for the PS3. I'll get to that game in a later review.

Made by famed developer Namco, Beautiful Katamari is a whirlwind of fun and zany hilarity.

Graphics - 7/10

Beautiful Katamari has visually improved dramatically since Katamari Damacy, the PS2 predecessor.

The game has a very cartoony and funny looking art style, which goes hand in hand with the off the wall gameplay and inconceivably rediculous story.

The terrifying amount of detail in every item in the game is because of the "starting small" approach the game took.

The only thing that doesn't have detail to it is the people, which look hideously weird. It takes away from the game's realism, but considering how its a game about rolling up Japanese items, people, and land masses, you shouldn't find much of a problem with it.

It isn't visually impressive, but it looks pretty darn good, and at some times, it can even be beautiful. The amount of detail is great, but lacks in a few aspects.

Sound - 9/10

This game is just... Japanese, in every aspect, you can only describe it as Japanese, so in the view of Sound, the game does a spectacular job at providing a great soundtrack. Featuring original songs and incredibly upbeat j-pop music, the music will always get you in the mood for rolling up Japanese families and hurling them into space.

The theme song is one of the most catchy and amusing themes of any game I've played. It's essentially just one voice humming, but the tune it hums is the song of the angels.

Katamari on the Rocks will always be a staple in video game soundtracks, and the rest of the music in this game will remain in history as one of the best ever.

The sound effects are nothing short of zany and hilarious, with a simple "tiock" type sound when you roll something up, and featurin... Read the rest of this Review
Bomberman Hero

A Great Platformer
The best possible memory from my childhood games.

Over the course of my life, there's been one game that was prominent to me, it was just one of my favorite N64 games, I never forgot it, but time did. That game was, as the title says, Bomberman Hero.

Bomberman Hero was a 3D platformer from the Bomberman series, a massive change up from previous games, and every other Bomberman game, because of the other games being a multiplayer arcade game, this game was overshadowed by all of them because it wasn't the normal Bomberman experience. It deserved more than that, it was a great game that should have gotten praise because of everything that it did right, instead of having to fit the dotted lines of it's previous games, it went past that.

Let's get started.

Graphics
The graphics in the game are original, good looking, and a good point of the game. There are points in the game where it can look plain, or stocked, and there are other points where it looks pretty good. It's not revolutionary looking, or as good looking as Nintendo's N64 games, but it holds up with the generation. They're clean, they don't get in the way of the game, and they're memorable.

Graphics - 8/10

Sound
The sound in Bomberman Hero is one of the best parts of the game. With amazing and catchy music all the way around, it leaves a very unique feeling and it's just so amazing when you hear the music behind any level just cheering you on and adding a fun vibe to the game that I haven't seen in many games since.

Music - 9/10

The sound effects can become repetitive at times, but they also add to the game, there's a certain satisfaction in getting a bomb strength of 4 and hearing the powerful blast that comes from it. The jumping, the bombs, and the boss sounds are all great sounding. Sometimes it can be annoying, but it's overall enjoyable to play with volume.

Effects - 6/10

The sound i... Read the rest of this Review
