Fez Review by: iN008 - 10/10
Fez!What can I say about Fez that hasn't been said before? Fez is by far one of the most popular indie games to date.
With many fans what could be bad about it? Nothing at all to be honest.
Fez is know for its amazing design and unlikely hero, whom of topic... wears a fez...
Each piece of game-play can be solved by using the unique change of perspective style that the game centers upon..
So lets get onto the review shall we?
Game-play :
The game-play in fez is truly outstanding, with brilliantly ingenious level designs and complex puzzles it sure is one of the best puzzle plat-formers out there. The main attraction for me with this game is definitely the perspective changing aspect of the platforming, each level requires you to change the perspective of Fez to complete the level, an interesting aspect that hadn't been seen before ( as I am aware that is... ). First appearance of Fez seems to be a bland same old story plat former, but as many of you know first appearances are know to dazzle with the unexpected in which in this case Fez achieved with maximum efficiency! Each level you come across are riddled with rotating, puzzle-solving fun that reveals doors to previously unreachable paths. Fez surely makes you see the world differently and makes you want to think to yourself what could happen if I changed the way I viewed the world I lived in... what secrets would I discover?
Each new puzzle is exceptionally fun, with the more challenging puzzles require more dedication to solve! What else could you discover in the 3D world of a 2D plat-former!
Graphics :
Each level is pact to the brim with colour and charming design, it feels inviting to run around the rotating world of Fez!
The character of Gomez isn't what you would expect from a main character, being a pure white little person of course with his lovely red fez,
I feel as if this itself gives the game a more friendly feel as the main character doesn't distract you from the wonderful design around him.
The charming visual aesthetics make sure that your always wanting to continue to see the next extraordinary level design! Each and every piece of visual aesthetic grabs your eye and demands you take a look at it, especially the tetris shaped pieces ....
Fez takes the nostalgic feel of 16bit generation and puts it into the modern day game-play quality, with a playful approach Fez definitely hits the mark with small references here and there to past games of the 16bit generation, all you have to do is look hard enough!
The playful environments of Fez urge you to explore, a key part of any game!
Sound / Music :
The music in fez is definitely not to be overlooked, each soundtrack is unique, catchy and can be very varied through the game.
The audio aspect of Fez almost certainly adds to its overwhelming charm ( something that has become very expected of indie developed games ). A beautiful soundtrack follows you around as you explore the charming aesthetics of Fez adding to the games experience making it a true must play for any gamers keen on hearing some amazing music that lives in harmony with the graphical design which is something I rarely see in games nowadays which is why I feel games such as Fez and Indie games in general get more praise for there individuality. After all what is a good game without good music that harmonizes with the graphical design?...
Addictiveness / Re-playability :
Fez is by far not something you would want to put down after starting to play! Each level entices you to continue and beat the next stage,
With the power of ingenious level design, charming visual display and beautiful music why would you have a reason to stop? The game offers plenty of stages making it something worth your time to sit down one day and play... for a few days... of-course what is a game without it's re-playability factor? Well I would consider a game with no re-playability a waste of time. Thankfully Fez is not one of these games, Fez is the perfect game to go back and play from the start multiple times. Why replay it so many times? Well there is always something to see in fez, a secret you missed, a reference you passed and didn't notice and so on.
Story :
You play as the wonderful Gomez who lived in peace in his two-dimensional world when one day he saw an event in which a golden cube disintegrates into a hundreds of pieces, this threatens the fabric of reality which cause your Xbox to "glitch, crash and reset" using a cleverly done impression of an old DOS boot screen which is also a key factor to its nostalgic aesthetic. During the same time as the disintegration of the golden cube a magical red fez gives Gomez the knowledge of the worlds biggest and oldest secret... they are three dimensions!
Gomez continues to collect the fragments that came from the golden cube to assemble the hexahedrom, and in order to do so he must use his power to change perspective to gain access to new areas to continue on his quest.
This by far is one of the most unique storyline to be followed in a game that I have seen in a long time. This puts out a great sense of nostalgia for me as I miss playing the story heavy games of my youth. Now most games are pure action and shooting. A truly unfortunate thing indeed.
Depth :
Fez goes into a whole new type of depth... the third dimension... of a two dimensional world... a whole new meaning to plat-forming.
The game of Fez doesn't feel like it ever ends and you have plenty to do once your done, to find all the secrets and references would take me forever. Each 90 degree turn in fez feels like a new adventure. A truly spectacular game indeed!
Difficulty :
Although the game can be very challenging at times. There is always a way to get past it. If the game was too hard many I feel would have abandoned ship and failed to gain the experience of this magnificent game. I feel they balanced the game perfectly to allow players of all kinds to enjoy and cherish the game the way it should be! For that I am truly thankful that the creator Phil Fish ( yes that is his name =_= )
went to so much effort to give us such an amazing game!
Overall / Conclusion :
Fez is a game that is very much worth your time! You couldn't be disappointing with this truly amazing game of tremendous originality and charisma, the novelty of the nostalgic sensation from the 16-bit styled game is one of the best that I had experienced from playing a modern game. If you ever get the chance to play Fez I hope you do as you would never be disappointed with such a marvelous game!
If you do play this game please let me know about how much you enjoyed it I would love to hear any tale you have!
