Tomb Raider Featured Review

Tomb Raider Review by: ender44 - 9.5/10

normal game, occasionally you find a tomb
Well, here we are. Tomb raider gives you the opportunity to control Lara Croft once again, this time allowing us to see her origin story. This game is Tomb Raider in a minuscule way. The game does not revolve around the tombs at all, they are just bonus areas, this might disappoint you, though it didn't really bother me. This game takes place before Lara has her experience and training, when she is just a humble Archaeologist, who is some how an acrobat/body builder/incredible shot/Olympic long jumper...uh, okay.

Gameplay: The gameplay bothers me the most. I am okay with something going unrealistic the way Zelda does.It offers you a nice explanation of why things are this way. The gameplay offers no explanation, and it makes no sense at all. Before I talk about what bothers me, I will give you a rundown of the game play. You will traverse around an island. Though you will spend a decent amount of time platforming, this game is, at its heart, a shooter. You will be provided with 4 weapons, each with many modifications you can get. The platforming plays out very similarly to the Uncharted Series. The various areas will have you jumping, climbing, and shooting if you find some enemies. Here is what really bothers me.

Your character can jump 7 feet in the air. Not only that, But she can jump 10 feet across. This doesn't bother me too much, But if there is a destination you are supposed to get to, your character will literally float in the air. You continue to go the same speed horizontally, But you almost stop vertically.

Bullets phase nobody. This is a desert island. Bullets tend to be a bit scarce. How does the game handle this? Make it so that each person can take over 7 bullets to the chest, and about 3 to the head. Those are the people without any armor whatsoever. Those who have armor can take over 10 bullets to the chest, and about 6 to the head. That is incredibly annoying to deal with. Not only that, But Lara can handle multiple shots from a minigun...that doesn't happen.

Lara is stronger than the Terminator, Chuck Norris, and Mewtwo all rolled together. She can climb faster than most human beings, with one climbing axe. She gets many open wounds throughout her journey. And doing a triple flip, falling 20 feet, and then hitting a cave floor tends to do a bit of damage. Nope, not to Lara Croft.

I went off topic there, But I had to say this in my review.

Graphics: This game looks fantastic. This game is more than likely  the best looking thing on the 360 (granted it is one of the latest) and it blew me away. The landscapes were very polished. I loved the effects of this game, everything looked fantastic. The thing I was a largest fan of was the weather types (hear me out before you call me weird) The snow storms and the torrential rain storms looked beautiful.

Sounds: not a huge fan here. The sound was typical and pretty bland. It was normal battle music, that and the sound of bullets. They could have done much more in the music department. It really is the outlier of this game, seeing as everything else in this game was flawless.

Addictiveness: You know what. I had to take a survey for this one. I did some asking around, and I will give you some opinions. While I do love this game, it didn't really hold a spell on me. It was certainly fun, But it didn't hold me like some other games can. Though, that is just me. Other people have informed me that it truly did hold them like a spell. Those are two opinions for you.

Story: This is the prequel to the entire series. It gives the origin story of Lara Croft. Lara was a humble archaeologist, who has an idea. They are currently looking for the ancient land of Yamatai. Lara thinks they should sail into the Dragon's triangle to find it. The Dragon's triangle is very similar to the Bermuda triangle, though the crew would rather take their chances with the Bermuda triangle. The terrible storm over takes the ship, and Lara survives the wreck. She is quickly introduced to the Solari, the main antagonists, they routinely capture her throughout the story, and this leads to the first plot hole. The story is mainly Lara trying get rid of the Solari and their leader.

Plot hole
Lara is captured TONS of times by the Solari. They are aware that she has killed tons of the Solari troops. Not only that, But they are given tons of times to just kill her, But they never do. She is always that one person out of hundreds who doesn't die. They kill EVERYONE But her. All they do is tie her up, even though she is by far the most dangerous. It really annoys me.

Depth: There is more to do in this game than in any of the other games I have reviewed. There is a unit of "currency" known as salvage that is used to modify the 4 weapons you are given. There are over 50 skill points you can obtain through experience, this experience being gained by killing enemies, finding secret things, and completing challenges. There are over 75 modifications you can obtain, these are "bought" using salvage. This is also an very long game in itself, I put many hours into it. There is also an online game with various game modes, using this you will need Xbox LIVE, and you will be able to play against people across the globe.

Difficulty: This game is VERY difficult. If you are familiar with 3rd person shooters, then it shouldn't be too difficult for you. But if you are at an intermediate level or a beginner, this could be pretty hard. The platforming isn't very difficult, the shooting should give you most of the trouble. I found myself dying quite a few times, and you might run into the same difficulty.

Though I am critical of some of the things it did, I do love this game. It was very memorable and it has great replay value.

See ya

I wasn't overly fussed on it. I think it was the worst Tomb Raider yet. Its a good game, but not a good Tomb Raider game.
