Time to review another Mega Man 3 Hack. Mega Man 3 was a very popular game and is what made Mega Man a video game Icon. Mega Man 2 put the Mega Man series on the map. Mega Man 3 is credited with establishing Mega Man as one of the most popular video game franchises ever. So it should be no surprise lots of hacks have been made of Mega Man 3. This particular Hack is known as Mega Man 3 Indonesia or Dr. Wily visits Indonesia. Either way its a Mega Man 3 hack. So in the review I will be comparing this to the original and other hacks.

Story: 8

The story has been changed in this hack. The original story was that Dr. Wily had seemed to turn good and teamed with Dr. Light to invent a peace keeping robot. But to get the Robot to work they needed 8 crystals guarded by 8 new robot masters who were running wild. So Light sends Mega Man out to see who is really in charge and has Dr. Wily really turned good or is this another one of his schemes. That was the original Mega Man 3 story line. This time its different. Dr. Wily latest scheme is to invade and conquer the country of Indonesia. He sends his Robot masters to conquer the country. Dr. Light sends Mega Man out to liberate Indonesia and stop Dr. Wily. Okay I was skeptical when I saw the story had been changed, because in a lot of hacks that sometimes is not good. But it seemed like the makers of this game were trying to offer something new and different. Unlike Mega Man 3 we know right off the bat that Dr. Wily has a new scheme. It was like the makers of this game took a classic game and tried to make something new about it. The only thing that is not explained in the plot is why did Dr. Wily chose Indonesia as his target. That could have been explained more. Still, I think despite the plot being changed its a good and interesting spin on a classic. So I give it an 8 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 6

The graphics in this game are amazing and were nicely done. I like how all the backgrounds have been changed. Despite that though they are amazing really. The colors were nicely done and go with the background very well. I like how they added a Jungle background in some of the stages. Since Indonesia has jungles due to their tropical climate. Also a few of the stages had a space theme. The buildings in the background were made to look like buildings you would see in Indonesia. The sprites were amazing too. I like how they changed some of the enemies colors. Mega Man's colors change as he gets a special weapon and were nicely done. The only thing though is there were a few instances where the game lagged it wasn't terrible and this is a hack so I expected it.

The controls is what brings the rating down they are not horrible but not terrific either. Sometimes you can find yourself fighting against the controls. This can cause you to fall into a pit, land on spikes or slow you down. Sometimes the controls slow really down and then speed up. I don't know why that is but its something you have to deal with while playing this game. Mega Man 3 had some of the smoothest controls for an NES game. Some of the hacks had good controls too. The graphics is what bumps the rating up and the controls brings it down. Thus I give the graphics and controls a 6 out of 10.

Sound: 9

Mega Man Indonesia has a new soundtrack that is different from Mega Man 3 or even the Mega Man 3 Ridley Hacks. Other hacks I have played of Mega Man 3 have kept the original games soundtrack. The original game had a very groovy sound and some of the best music in the NES games. You could just pause the game and listen. Well, Indonesia has a different soundtrack. But it it is still nicely done. The game uses tunes to other classic Mega Man games. So even though it was changed it still had good music. I like other classic Mega Man themes too. Mega Man 5, 6, 4 and 2 soundtracks were used some in this game. Plus the stage select has its own unique sound. Even though they didn't use the original game's music they used other MM games that were just as good. The sounds the enemies make are about the same as the original game. Mega Man's busters shots are the same. Therefore, I give the sound of Indonesia a solid 9 out of 10.

Replay Value: 7

This was a fun hack to play and stuff I had a good time playing it. In addition, I play this one when I want something different. However, the thing is I don't think this game is in the same league as Mega Man 3. On the other hand Mega Man 3 was just special in its own way that it would be really hard to top the original. So compared to other hacks this one is good but I like the Ridley Hacks better. The Riddley hacks resembled more of the original. They also did not have the flaws that this one did. So while this game is good it could have been better. I would play this one more if it wasn't for the control issues. Still its a good game to play and a fun one. I give it a good 7 out of 10.

Depth  7

Mega Man 3 had lots of depth to it. Secret blocks, secret rooms, long stages, and lots of items to collect. That is typical of most Mega Man games. Even the Ridley hacks carried on that tradition. The depth in this game has been scaled back. I did not find that many secret rooms with items, I also did not find that many secret blocks either that held power ups. I was kind of disappointed to see that because Mega Man games have high depth. Now, the stages are long though so you have to go a long ways before making it to the halfway mark. There are still weapons to collect by beating Robot Masters. So, the game still takes awhile to beat and master. The stages take several minutes to complete. So it does have some depth to it just not like other Mega Man games. I give it a 7 out of 10.

Difficulty: 10

Indonesia was difficult for the right and wrong reasons. I will start off with the right reasons. The game is a challenge when it comes to difficulty. Enemies will just bury you in this game and often they are placed in very tight spots. The enemies will hit you from behind, knock you off platforms, cause you to miss a jump, cause you to land on death spikes or fall into a pit. In addition, the enemies do a huge chunk of damage. Enemies will also gang up on you. So it requires skills and luck to beat this game. Also the jumps require skills to make  you have to be very precise. If you have margin for error you will fall to your doom or get poked to death by death spikes. The Robot Masters move faster and have more attacks then they did in the original game. Even the bosses that were easy in the original game can be a nightmare in this one. So it requires lots of dodging, skills and luck to beat. I like games like that though it really challenges you and makes beating them an accomplishment. Plus I like to be challenged.

Now here is were the game is difficult for the wrong reasons and it mainly has to do with the controls. I found myself fighting against the controls a lot in this game. The controls will slow down and then speed up. Sometimes Mega Man is sluggish this can get you hit or cause you to fall. Then all of a sudden the controls will speed up. This too can get you in a tough jam in a fight or trying to climb a latter.  In addition it also effects Mega Man's buster as his shots speed up and slow down. Some of my deaths in this game were due to nothing but the controls. I like games that are difficult. But I like games that are difficult for the right reasons that I mentioned above. When a game is difficult for the wrong reasons it is not challenging but irritating.

So yeah, Indonesia was hard to rate. The game is very difficult due to enemies, difficult bosses, pits, spikes and long stages. That is how a game should be difficult and that is for the right reasons. But at the same time the game's control issues makes it difficult too and its mainly just annoying. I'm giving the difficulty a 10 out of 10. But its one of those that is hard to rate. If the game did not have control issues I would still give it a 10 as it reminds me of the Ridley hacks which would just bury you. But, I kind of feel like when a game is difficult for wrong reasons its like its a cheated difficulty. Its like the game is cheating to get a high difficult rating if that makes sense. So yeah a 10 out of 10 for difficulty.

Overall Rating: 7.6

Well Mega Man 3 in Indonesia was something different. I had fun playing it the game did have some good points and some negatives. Before I get into the negatives I will go with the positives. I really like how the makers of this game tried to offer something new. Having Wily invade and conquer Indonesia offered a different spin on a classic game. It was like the makers of this hack were trying to offer something new. I really liked that. I also like how they made some Indonesia references in the background such as the jungle and the buildings.  Also the colors and sprites are amazing. All of that took some art work and creativity. In addition, the sound track though different was nicely done. It feels like the makers of this hack were wanting to give the impression you were playing a different game and it feels like it. One can easily forget you are playing a hack of Mega Man 3. Indonesia feels like a complete new game even thought its a hack. Moreover, the difficulty in enemy placement, jumps and difficult bosses also is for the right reasons and is a positive for this game.

Now the game does have some flaws to it that bring down the rating. The biggest flaw is the controls. The controls as I have mentioned can be a real pain in this game. You will find yourself fighting against the controls a lot. I don't know why this game had some control issues. Maybe it was the software they used to create this game who knows? Another negative and its minor is why was Dr. Wily in Indonesia? Was he invading the country to make a point, was it for resources, or some other reason. It was never explained. But maybe its supposed to be a mystery to add suspense to the story line. So that is a minor part. The difficulty while it is a positive it can be a negative for the wrong reasons. But, that is mostly due to the controls. The depth being toned down was a negative I was expecting to see secret rooms, hidden paths, and other secrets that Mega Man was known for. Yes, I know this is a hack but still even the Ridley hacks had secrets in them.

Now Indonesia is a fun game to play and it does offer a different spin on Mega Man 3. But due to the flaws I find myself going back to this one less. Would I recommend this game well that depends ? If you like to play Mega Man games just cause their Mega Man games, they offer a different spin, just are different, and if you like to be challenged. Then yes I would recommend this game as it is something different. However, if you get irritated easy hate fighting against controls, or get burned out easy playing video games. Then this game is not for you. So this one was hard for me to rate. Its not the worst hack I have played and it is not terrible. The game does have good things to offer despite its flaws. On the other hand the flaws knock the rating back a bit as I have played better hacks. Thus, I give Indonesia a rating of 7.6  again not terrible, but nothing like the original, some of the Ridley Hacks and the simple Hack. Its pretty hard to top them especially the original. I have yet to play a hack to top the original game. The only one that comes close is Mega Man Simple but that is because its Mega Man 3 with a very easy difficulty. So if you chose to play this game and you should give it a chance. I hope you enjoy it because despite the flaws it can be a fun game to play and it does offer something different. Thus, 7.6 for a rating seems right.
