Space...a name given to the very vastness that surrounds our tiny little water planet, the every expanding blackness filled with tiny bright lights dotting our skies at night. Space, for all tense and purposes, can be one of the most terrifying things known to man, if not the most terrifying. But with the fears that come from data and theories it is also one of the most beautiful things to behold. The vast unknown, the various planets out there, the bright colorful nebulae and other galaxies.

Now why is Outer Space, or just Space, terrifying? Well..Supernovas, the heat of the sun, lack of oxygen, hostile atmosphere of other planets we could never hope to put people on, ect..but even though that is scary it is still beautiful in its own sense. Its something we can't touch or mess with because it is beyond us. We can examine and make our theories and speculations. For some, that's satisfying. For others..they'd like to a see a lot more..which we can't do. Or at least currently.

The reason I make this thread is because one such thing we cannot touch..and to some degree have a hard time comprehending at all. That would be: Black Holes. A swirling vortex of nothingness to a point. But when mass gets close and sucked in the light that shoots out from these things are spectacular. But what happens in a Black Hole? Well...we'll never really know because of how dangerous it is, once you get caught in a certain gravitational layer, its over.

Now whether you have watched this video or not, what are your thoughts on Black Holes? Do you think some day we could get more information from these things than we do now? Could we possibly one day be threatened by one of these things as Space continues to move at a constant? Will we ever find out what's on that other side when one goes within it? Black Holes is a very interesting subject to me. I have watched and read quite a bit about them. Stephen Hawking (the greatest mind in our time) had a theory that Black holes destroy matter but It was proved wrong by a plumber (I think that's what he was). He said that a Black Hole is more like a sink full of water, you can drop food coloring into that sink, the foot coloring is spread out and dispersed but not destroyed. The Black Hole would work in the same way, if it sucked something in it would stretch and disperse that thing intill it is so stretched and that it looks like it is gone. But who knows though, Black Holes could be like Worm Holes for all we know.

I'm glad someone shares the same enthusiasm as I do about these things. I've always loved learning about everything there is to know with Outer Space. But Black Holes always caught my attention because we no know so little about them. I would have to look back into that again but I do think you're right about the plumber and his theory, even though I love Hawking to death and everything he's contributed for us. There is always that chance Black Holes are worm holes. That would be so mind blowing if that is what they truly are...and they can be survived of course. But then I guess that raises the question: where do we end up once we're spit out at the other side? :o There's always that common theory of an alternate universe where every thing is the same but different from what we see and know now, so maybe it'd toss us there or something.

I find black holes to be very interesting. I don't exactly understand them, but they fascinate me. I would really like to go into a black hole and see what happens!

tgags123 : Well if you want a decent example of what happens inside a black hole then check the youtube link in he main thread post. Its a great vid about the theory of what it is like if we were to send a satellite of some kind inside the black hole or if we ourselves were to go inside. Its rather frightening but amazing at the same time.  

If of course videos aren't your thing I can at least give you this picture that is from the video. By the time you reach the "end" of the black hole this is what you're suppose to see in theory.

Black holes does sound like an interesting yet terrifying at the same time. Honestly I like to learn about astronomy alot but if someone ask me to go into space that a whole different story than.

B619ook : Astronomy is a very powerful thing, my friend, whether some people to believe it so or not. We not only learn about other stars but we learn so much more about our own. I encourage you to keep learning about it as i'm doing the same.

I however would be a bit on the opposite side when it comes to taking a trip to space. Once upon a time a younger me wanted nothing more than to be an astronaut. Of course life showed up and told me no because my math skills aren't up to snuff but eh. 

If I could have a chance at going to space...I'd take it. I know the risks that comes with it but its something I wouldn't pass up at all. But space travel and all that isn't meant to grab everyones interest without natural fear. I think i'd still be scared out of my mind but my excitement and longing for a first hand experience would overcome that. Pictures of the earth from the moon just don't do it for me. ^^"

I find this to be a very interesting topic, I have always pondered the topic of black holes and I think they are amazingly interesting and I have a great interest and appreciation for astronomy. I can only imagine what it would be like to be in a black hole, not even light can escape from it! I enjoy learning anything having to do with outer space! That is why I excel in science, I can't believe how so many ignorant kids in my school don't find science to be interesting. It really is!

Razor-987 : Happy to make your day there, Razor. Hopefully you like the video with it as well. Like mentioned it is a few years behind but thats as theoretical as we've gotten thus far with the interior of what a black hole would be like. It honestly blew my mind watching the vid and seeing how much data we have to come up with such a theory really and that vid gives the best visual presentation. 

And I feel for you my friend, it is a shame too many people are ignorant to the sciences of the world and even the very creations that float out in the universe aside from our tiny planet. Astronomy is both a science and an art in my personal opinion. We've been able to learn so much by just looking up. Everything out there in the vacuum is both beautiful and scary. Its amazing how many black holes are out there and the different size variations...and yet they all do the same thing despite the mass of each hole. 

Keep learning, keep asking questions, and keep growing with existence. It only gets more interesting as history pushes forward and new things are discovered. 

Just a small curiosity of mine, but can anyone actually find a black hole TERRIFYING?  I mean, sure, the idea of them might be quite frightening, but it's not like anyone has ever ACTUALLY experienced one.  They certainly don't pose a threat to us right now, do they?

Maybe I'm just misinformed?  

A lot of great sci-fi novels develop from these things, you know!

Singelli : In theoretical scenarios for the most part one can place themselves in a situation and imagination runs its course. I guess what it mostly comes down to is if we ever do space flights again you never know if our unlucky astronaut heroes end up being drawn into one of these things with a pull too strong for them to escape. Black holes are mostly terrifying for the great unknown about them...that and they're invisible to us unless we have the equipment to pick up on their radiation or they're sucking something else in and its giving off light.

Its a natural danger that can't be overcome unless of course have a rocket of some sort to actually blast your way out of its pull. Other than that its a one way trip to basic oblivion and possibly another dimension that could never be reached. Sad thing is no one could really experience a black hole...if they tried..well..they'd be severed in half and crushed as far as the theories go.

When it comes down to it, its mostly terrifying for the fact that if we ever try to study this thing, whatever we use to do so or if we EVEN try to use people...we'll likely lose who or whatever it is if it can't break free from its crazy gravitational pull. Not to mention black holes are almost every where in space. Earth is lucky that if the sun were to ever die that it doesn't collapse in on itself and become a black hole. But of course there are many theories saying the sun couldn't do that and just become a Supernova.

I hope that I don't bore everyone but I don't think of a black hole as anything
special. I know that scientists have located something that causes stars to circle around it.
And I know that we can't see it.

My guess is this:

It is a super concentration of mass that is so concentrated that even light 
cannot escape it. But I don't think that it is a hole, because I'm not sure that 
a hole can be torn into the "time space fabric" of which I'm also unsure of it's existance.

I know that the universe is made out of matter, but the whole idea of time space fabric
and blacks holes appear more as theories in my opinion. But hey, speculation can be fun.

While I don't see it realistically as a hole, If I was to theorize on what it could do if it really
was a hole, I would say that it would take you to another universe

One of the most interesting things about Black Holes thus far is that the center of our Galaxy, the Milky Way, is actually a Supermassive Black Hole. Though I am still looking into that more and more since I found that but I think our distance to a degree is what keeps us completely safe. 

Stephen Hawkings did lot's of research on them. They are composed of ant-matter, a substance that destroys, unlike matter that is all things that make up our universe. When the universe was made all matter and antimatter competed. There was more matter so the universe expanded, and anti-matter is still formed when singular points of gravity become extremely strong, often when a REALLY BIG star explodes. So a black hole is made and sucks like nuts.

Aren't black holes just super dense collections of matter to the point where their gravity pulls things in?  You go far enough and you simply get crushed because of the gravity.  I don't think there's any reason to fear them.  They're awesome to think that even light particles can't escape with the speed they travel but it's not a fear thing.  It's just really impressive.

Mecha Leo : Antimatter does not destroy. It is simply the exact same as matter only opposite charged. So if matter and antimatter come into contact, they cancel each other out, releasing enormous amounts of energy. But antimatter isn't a substance that destroys. If there was more antimatter than matter at the beginning, we would simply be made up of antimatter instead of matter. In that case, our chemical properties would be reverse of what they are now. And black holes aren't composed of antimatter. They originate from a hypernova, in which those stars were matter. Therefore, the particles that get pulled in are matter, not antimatter. The only way you could get an antimatter black hole is if there were a large enough star made up of antimatter and collapsed in a hypernova.
