Vizzed is looking to hire some users to help out with the Retro Game Room. Below are the positions available:

Game Reviewer (6 0 positions left)
Your job will be to review games.
Prerequisite: You must submit 2 reviews (at least 500 words each) to any of the games in the video game room or the retro game room and than give me links to the reviews. If we liked your reviews, you'll be hired.

Game Tester (3 0 positions left)
Your job will be to test out MAME games in the RGR
Prerequisite: You must be either a trusted member or been a member for at least a year and have at least 10 posts. Game Testers must also be able to test the MAME games in Qmc2, so you should be able to get that working on your computer first.

Prerequisite for all positions: You must be able to come to the site at least 3 days a week and be able to invest at least 20 hours a month into the site. You must also be 13 years old or older.

Benefits of joining
Every staff member gets access to all of the MAME and Sega CD games. Staff members also get more Viz per a post, access to the cometchat bar, VIP Gold membership on Get-Your-Rom.com and much more.

If you're interested in applying, reply to this thread.

Davideo7 :

I am a huge fan of this site and I have been curious on what I coul do to join the staff or become a mod. I am a kind person and I can be very helpful. I am 100% honest on what I say and will give my opinion. I would loe to be a tester or a Reviewer. Though I cannot play 64 games on my computer I am will to do others. I read applications you made and I am on everyday after school. I would like a job or something in the least to be a help to Vizzed and help it grow. Though I may seem really weird I can be a great person who can help lots out.

I shall get the Two reviews to you in a little bit

I would have liked to do the Game Tester one since I'm actually doing just that now anyway... :p

I don't meet the prerequisites though, unfortunately. I could probably meet the requirements for Reviewer fairly easily, but I review rather sporadically, so I don't feel it would be a good idea to have an actual position doing that where you're relying on me to write reviews consistently >.>

Really? That's neat. What would I have to do to formally apply then? Other than state that I'm interested in the position, of course.

Also, what would a person in the position be doing aside from the obvious task of playing MAME games? Would they submit reports to you? If so, would it just be about games that have issues and any other issues in the emulator or would you prefer a full list of every game tested and the results found?

Crazy Li : If you're interested in doing the MAME game testing and can commit to doing it, I'll hire you. Basically you'll just test out games to see if they work and mark the errors if they don't. You'll also be renaming the games that aren't properly named.

Davideo7 : Yeah, I can do this no problem. I'd also be willing to do the same for any hypothetical future systems you may add that go to beta.

So far, I have noticed any errors in the 12 MAME games I've played in RGR. The only issue I've noticed is that savestating doesn't work properly. The RGR plugin doesn't even mention that you can save and load, but I tried F2 just for the heck of it and it did bring up the save state function as normal. The only issue is that F2 in MAME also goes to some sort of debug configuration screen (where you set the dip switches and other system settings that the arcade owners have access to). So technically, there's nothing wrong with the save/load function as it works correctly... it's just that the key conflict causes save states to be impractical. Either the save state button should be reassigned or that configuration screen should be a different key.

tRIUNE guided me here.

This seems quite a bit like what I've been doing the past few days on Vizzed RGR already. If anyone who's applying needs a quick look at what's already been tested, check some of my recent logs of games played and pictures taken. I'll be willing to

I've already discussed some things about MAME as it is, but I suppose I'll give a refresher;

1) There are lots of file dependencies to work out, especially for games running on specific hardware varieties that need BIOs files. Games which use CHDs, and Laserdisc games, are likely to be major issues due to their large filesizes.

If a game complains of missing files, don't write it off as "non-working' right away. Sometimes these files are found in other games or BIOs files on the RGR.

2) Some games load with default settings that aren't necessarily user-friendly. This includes games with multiple language options defaulting to Japanese, 6-button games having awkward default control schemes, or, well, simply not having Free Play enabled where applicable. This may need to be worked on on a game-by-game basis.

3) If a game appears to play slow, remember that current versions of MAME (which Vizzed RGR seems to have based it's plugin MAME on) uses fairly high-level, hardware-accurate emulation that requires more intense CPU processing than the console emulators on the site currently. Also remember that some of the games on MAME are fairly recent games which used powerful hardware to begin with.

There are other arcade emulator alternatives which may play certain games faster or with better compatibility. There's also some ROMs that may run more smoothly in other emulators (Playchoice-10 games, which currently aren't running in the MAME setup, could play in NES emulators, and Nintendo Super System games in SNES emulators, for example). But, in the end that's up to Vizzed staff to figure out what to support. *shrug*

4) MAME emulates the software of pinball machines, but I don't think there's any practical way the RGR can support this, so we may need to figure out which ROMs are actually Pinball ROMs and remove them until we can figure out what to do about them.

5) Be sure to check clones and variants, they might surprise you with how different they may be.

Blah blah blah ranty.

I'll say more stuff later.

KiddoCabbuses : I was a little impressed by what you know about the arcade games on MAME until you said "Blah blah blah ranty. I'll say more stuff later" - that doesn't really correspond with the PM I sent you. I want to hire someone who is not only knowledgeable about MAME, but is also willing to be serious about testing the games.

lol. It's just that it's 2:40 AM and I'm tired, and people might mistake me for actually being in the TdV if I make a long post.

I generally don't like being wordy, since the most common response I get is "tl;dr" or "You have no life."

In all seriousness, I'll probably think of what to say when it all comes up... actually, speaking of which.

If you really need a few more pieces of knowledge though, I'll start with a quick-fix suggestion: reroute the Playchoice-10 games to have their NES ROM files playing on the NES emulator for the time being. For some reason the plug-in crashes trying to load these on MAME. If you need any further help with that, feel free to ask me.

Nintendo VS. System stuff also chokes the plug-in. Unfortunately there isn't really a quick-fix for this. Do you know if the NES emulator you use has Vs. System support?

Here is a hack of VS. Super Mario Bros. which was designed to run on the NES Powerpak, by the way. It might be a good alternative to the MAME ROM.

Nooww can I go to bed? lol

KiddoCabbuses : You're right about the clones and variants thing. I was looking at 2 games called "D-Day" for MAME and one just had a set type in parenthesis as the only difference in the title. Turns out, they're two completely different games.

When doing my testing, I'm making sure to report what files MAME tells me its missing when a game fails. The only load fail I experienced thus far is a BIOS issue, though that was encountered before I began formally testing (kinda just my natural trying out the new plugin and looking up just games I actually knew).

I wasn't even gonna start the real testing until tomorrow... but I'm having trouble sleeping, so I tried a few (VERY FEW) tonight.

Also on point #2, yes, the default controls suck... so people have to take note that they can use the menu to change these and should make sure to do so right away. They need to be changed per-game since every game is different and no universal catch-all set can be used... (well, it CAN but that's like 50 different controls and I don't think anyone wants to set that).

Stuff like Free Play, if it exists, is usually done through the game's hardware setup/dip switch area. I've seen this come up a couple of times in NeoGeo games I was playing last week when I hit F2 and discovered that menu was tied to that key (which unfortunately is also Save State)
KiddoCabbuses : You're right about the clones and variants thing.

I would like to be a game tester. Because I am on Vizzed since one year. And then, I like to test video games. It would be my pleasure to know if all MAME games are working. Also, I always wanted to help the site! I am also a very active user!

Crazy Li : F2 being mapped to both Savestate and dipswitch/service mode is an issue to bring up. It's rather frustrating, since it seems the user side can't change these keys him/herself.
On the note of NeoGeo, I think it'd be a neat idea to have an option for those who want to play NeoGeo games in console/AES mode, but I suppose that may be a latter discussion. I don't recall what other games, off the top of my head, have "home version" modes.
Are there any particular games that are in demand for a "test" currently, anyhow? I've mostly just been checking things out in a manner kinda like wandering around...

KiddoCabbuses : I know some versions of MAME let you set AES mode through the menu (the same one that lets you set controls)... though most of that was older versions. The latest version of MAME I've personally used seemed to ditch that option entirely. Assuming they're using a relatively new version as a base, that may not be something that's available.

Davideo7 :   I'm interested in applying for a reviewer.  Could I use two reviews I've written already, or should I write new ones?
