For all of you Nintendo hopefuls that hope that someday, that Nintendo is going to release the Virtual Console on the Switch, but it's one of those "Bad News/Good News" scenarios.

Here's the article I read on IGN

The Bad New is...
Nintendo won't be releasing the Virtual Console on the Switch at all that people were hoping for all the way back even before the Switch was revealed and the system was simply called the "NX".

But the Good News is.....
You can be able to play some of the NES game (and soon, other consoles will be joining in at a later time) for free if you pay for their online services this coming September which is US$4 for 1 month, US$8 for 3 months, and US$20 for a year.

And speaking of the NES games being installed, Nintendo has announced the following games...

Balloon Fight
Dr. Mario
Ice Climbers
Soccer/Football
Tennis
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Donkey Kong
The Legend of Zelda

Plus 11 more NES games planned to announce for the Launch of the Online services.

_____

Anyways, what are your thoughts about Nintendo not releasing the Virtual Console?

For me, I'm a little disappointed that Nintendo won't release it, but after looking how much it would cost for a membership vs how much it would cost for each game, I though that it might be a little bit better.

As long as they treat the classic games service as almost equal as the Virtual Console, I don't think it's a big problem. While I think it's cool they will all be available alongside the subscription and the addition of new features for the games, I still am doubtful about if other things will happen, like third-party support and localizations of some Japan-exclusive retro games that were released on the Wii and Wii U. Take in account that the Wii U VC even had Wii and DS games on it.

Well, looks like the main reason for this is that the games have been enhanced, and so it's no longer a Virtual Console because the games aren't the original ones. Not like the enhancements will be that great, mainly some HD-like tweak and some online additions, so the games will largely be the same but adapted to the modern era.

I see nothing bad on this. While being able to play classic games as they were is nice, having them adapted to online gaming is even better. Plus, the online service fees are cheap compared to what were we charged to play each of these games separately back in the Virtual Console, so we have everything to win here (and for several years, may I add).

We'll have to see if they get more systems added. The Gamecube was really penalized for having very few online features, and this new service could make its games shine even brighter. The Wii games could also benefit from this, though those will probably be the last ones to add.

Not sure what you guys think, but this "enhancement" of classic games sounds like Nintendo is getting ready for the upcoming 25th anniversary of Pokemon. Imagine Pokemon Stadium, Pokemon Snap or maybe even Colosseum back in full force, all alongside the brand new core game premiering on the Switch.

Well that's a little bit of a letdown for the homebrew community for sure. I imagine a whole lot of people were looking forward to Switch Virtual Console specifically so they could take advantage of it when it's eventually hacked. Not the end of the world, though. There's always ports of other highly functional emulators and it's not like the Switch runs exotic hardware.

like you said it's disappointing news for so many fans, but there's a good side to the story since the company will be introducing cloud save for the online service, and will be re releasing some classic nes titles (and rumors say that there will be a virtual console specifically for the gamecube). i believe they will also remake some good titles to the switch (such as an HD remake for super mario sunshine!). as for my thoughts well i haven't used it much to be honest, i only bought 2 games on the wii u from the eshop, which were both wii games (skyward sword and mario galaxy), and besides i dont use much the online service on any nintendo console.

After watching some YouTube videos and comments about people complaining that Nintendo discontinuing the Virtual Console on the Switch all act like it's the end of the world. Even some users even stated "I'm not going to sign up for the Online Service for the Switch if I'm not getting the Virtual Console."

I even asked myself... "like Seriously"

You mean to tell me that you don't want to fork out US$20 to join Nintendo's online services for a year. I'm looking at my 3DS e-shop, and each NES game cost US$5, and if you do the math, US$20 is enough to only buy 4 NES games on the Virtual Console... ONLY 4!!! And you mean to tell me that you don't want to spend US$20 a year to play like what, US$100 worth of NES games (and with more to come), and that will save you like what? US$80, and heck, that's even enough to buy a brand new Nintendo Switch game and still have money left over.

Before any of you ask, well, what about next year when I have to pay another US$20, or in 5 years when I already payed that US$100? You know within a years time, Nintendo will add even more NES titles, SNES titles, and possibly N64, and maybe GameCube games, and in 5 years, Nintendo will probably released every single Nintendo game they have ever released from the NES to the Switch and from the Original GameBoy to the 3DS.

KillerLatias : I do respect that you are not planning on not getting the Nintendo Switch mostly because the Virtual Console isn't coming on the Switch, and I do understand that. Look, I felt the same way as well when Nintendo announced that they discontinued the Virtual Console starting the Switch, I was mad and upset, but then about the whole Online Services offering the same thing starting with the NES titles, I might give it a chance.

But still, I really like the Virtual Console, but after my earlier posts, this might be better though, might start off like *you know*, but maybe, just maybe, it might be a whole lot better after time, but it would be a tough call though. It's one of those "wait and see" kinda things.

So wait... they are not offering a service where you can buy old games, but rather a subscription service where you can all the old games? So, pretty much, like XBOX Game Pass and whatever it is called that the PlayStation 4 has?

thing1 : Kinda something like that, although I haven't use PlayStation Network in like 4 years (haven't played a PlayStation console in 4 years), and I never used the Xbox Game Pass thing because of not playing any Xbox console. But it would be something like that though.

IgorBird122 : Nintendo is already planning on being super cheap, right? I might get the subscription service, and the "Game Pass" if they are less than $60 combined. I mean, that's what I pay for both XBOX Live and PS Plus. While I don't get their streaming services included, I do get 2 free games a month (4 on xbox, because you get 2 xbox one games, and 2 xbox 360 games)...

I have to say though, as of now, I don't think I'll be getting it. The only games I would be interested in are the Legend of Zelda, Dr. Mario, and the 2 Super Mario Bros. games. I'm pretty sure Mario World 1 and Zelda are on my SNES Classic, and Dr. Mario is too close to Puyo Puyo, which I am terrible at... So Super Mario Bros. 3 is not enough to warrant me getting it at this time.

Old-ish news, I know, but I never heard of this until seeing this thread. That totally blows because I feel like mobile systems are perfect for the Virtual Console. Especially with something as powerful as the Switch, I feel like portable Gamecube games could be perfect. But hey, $20/year is a helluva deal for online, and I guess getting some NES games for free is kinda neat.

thing1 : I know with Super Mario Bros 3, which happened to be my most favorite game in history and highest rated game I have ever given, a 9.8/10 (although that title for most favorite video game will be on the line with SSB Ultimate this December), I might go ahead and get the subscription.

TheFadedWarrior : Yeah, I figured that they would of added the Virtual Console on the Switch, that would of been nice, but hey, I wouldn't mind paying US$20 per year for all those NES games I can play for free, and knowing Nintendo, they might release more NES titles as well as SNES, N64, GameBoy, GameBoy Color, and maybe GameBoy Advance & GameCube games all within a year or 2 after launch.

Here is my take, yes there should be a virtual console, and yes it should have virtually every retro game on it, start working with those that have the rights to certain games, and offer them a good deal. Because what is really funny is Nintendo is starting to crack down on emulation sites again, because of ROMS being posted. Now don't get me wrong, I love emulation, I think it's one of the best things ever, and it preserves gaming. Not only that you have the ROM Hacking community, and you have bootleg games, etc. BUT, Nintendo is allowed to do what they want with what they own. Now with other games that are not developed by them, that's on those developers not Nintendo. Still they need to continue on the Virtual Console for those that won't emulate, etc.

HeavyMetalGamer : I do feel the same exact way as well. I do understand that Nintendo wants to crack down on Emulation sites of using their 1st party content which is understandable, because Nintendo does have every right to say on their 1st Party content, and it's not just Nintendo, but both Sony and Microsoft is guilty on the same thing as well with their 1st Party content, but not as severe as Nintendo.

With you mentioned about the ROM Hacking and Bootleg Games, this is my theory though, but I think that Nintendo wanted to prevent another Video Gaming Crash like we had in 1983 which caused the Great Video Gaming Recession of 1983-1985, so that is why they are trying to cut down on those Hacks and Bootlegs, because that is what a lot of people did with Atari 2600, so many people created so many hacks and bootlegs that it nearly destroyed the entire Video Gaming industry. So, that is why I understand that Nintendo wants to cut down on Hacks and Bootlegs on their content, mostly to stay safe than sorry.

As for 3rd Party Games, especially the vintage/retro 3rd Party games, I understand with this saying. There is a huge list of 3rd Party games and abandoned series from the NES and SNES days that I do like to play someday, and even despite that I still have my SNES and NES, but I only manage to have a total of 7 games and all 7 are 1st Party Nintendo games, but way back when, there was a number of 3rd Party games and abandoned series that I want to play again, and only way I can play these games is by emulation sites.

Anyways, with the whole Nintendo Switch Online Services, I love to subscribe to this service, but may or may not use it for the games since afterall, I have the SNES, even if Nintendo didn't scrapped the Virtual Console, I probably wouldn't buy those games either due to having it on the SNES.

This makes me sad, the virtual console was one of the coolest features of past Nintendo systems. It also disencouraged game emulation.

If you can only play the games with a subscription, then what happens several years later when new consoles come out and Nintendo is ready to stop supporting the switch?
With the virtual console, as long as they are downloaded before they pull the plug, then you can still play. I doubt that will be the case if they are subscription based.

Well, at least they're doing something different than trying to push those accursed preloaded classic systems. Anything at all, the horror.
I hate subscription services though. This makes me a bit mad in that regard (but not too bad), but it does make me concerned for the state of other classic games. Them remonotizing more old games will mean stricter restrictions on emulations of other unrelated games that have no chance of seeing the light of day on a virtual release but still technically reside under the umbrella of nintendo.  I suppose this isn't entirely horrible, but it does mean that the only way to play them is to purchase the cartridge, which can be expensive (with none of that money going back to nintendo anyway).
What has always confused me is why nintendo of america is so hell bent on taking down emulations of games released exclusively in japan that have had no international translation, release, or plan of future release to speak of.  This is more a personal quandary than anything else, and I understand that copyright is very black and white, but it just gets on my nerves.
