Ktanaqui : An title I got is the Socom series. The games that is before part 4. The game usually make you take command of a 4 man squad. Before each mission you need to choose your weapons and equipment for the mission, and the stuff you have can determined the outcome. During each mission you need to keep yourself, and the squad alive. If your whole squad upset for you die mission is fail. A lot of the mission require stealth. So you need to command the team very well, and the A.I of the computers are stupid as heck, but have very good aim. Is this a good enough example?

Ktanaqui : That depends on your mentality in regards to gaming... if you like going in order, I'd say start with the first. If you just want a good introductory to the series, skip some of the weaker earlier entries and go straight to the first Disgaea game on PS2 (or the PSP port). It might be awkward going back to the older systems though.

The first game I guess is technically Rhapsody for PS1 but it's a lot different. You have a main character and puppets that fight with her and not many characters. It's not like a normal SRPG. After that was La Pucelle Tactics for the PS2 which is closer to the regular style of their games.

So... free roam, in essence? I think that might be a sub-genre all it's own. But I'm not positive. I love free roam games too. Especially ones like Borderlands.
