The very first Phantasy Star Online game, your character info was stored on your computer. The reason for this is so you could play the game offline with your character, even if you weren't connected to the internet.

For the PS2 game, can you use the same character to play offline and online?

Nope you can't. Which is the big problem. With story mode, extra mode, and network mode, you'd have to start over from scratch 3 times, which is boring.

Yeah, that's a good thing and a bad thing at the same time. Both the Dreamcast and PC you could play with your same character both online and offline (i think you could for the pc, I know you could for the DC). Anyway, because of this though, you open up the doors for all sorts of hackers and cheaters.

Speaking of PSO, I am now level 7 *has to update that* this game is fun online except for two problems: I cannot save my guild card info for friends because I don't know where to enter my serial codes (they didn't ask me to enter them when I opened the game) and I cannot chat because my laptop does not have a number pad (there's a solution to turn it to japanese but I can't figure out how to do it)

Laptops usually have a button which you can hold down that allows some of the letters to be used as numbers...do any of your letter keys have numbers on them?

Also, are you playing the one I provided?

I am playing the one you provided and yes, there's M(0) L(3) K(2) J(1) 8(8) 9(9). I did request the serial number and did receive it ( for optional activation ) and I know it's optional but I really want to figure out how to use it, so I can save my buddy list ( and ultimately save you guys on there ) I did miraculously manage to find out how to type ONCE in that game. I held FUNCTION and another key... I think I pressed M *goes back to try it*

Yeah it would probably be the function key plus another letter. On my laptop I have to press the 'Num Lock' key and than press M for zero.
