This is just a quick question to bring up. I'm an avid RPGer, I live my RPGs. Favorite type of games.

I prefer the old school turn based RPGs.

To me the old school turn based had more depth and brain power to use. You had to figure out what order everyone would be attacking and change your strategy accordingly. Where as the new school, you just do whatever needs done when it needs done. I could compromise and go with something along the lines of chrono trigger or Final Fantasy 7, where they have the active battle system or the wait system, I've used both for both games, and didn't really change the game to much, made it a little faster paced going with active.

Anyway, your thoughts on favorite RPG battle system and why?

I like the active battle system as long as it wasn't a button-masher. I hate games that just make you hit X oer and over and over and over and over and over and there's little skill, finesse, or strategy to it.

Final Fantasy 3 is the ultimate in battle systems. I think Final Fantasy X rates up towards the worst with the sub-in and only three people fighting at once. I get the idea but I cannot agree with it.

I think I like the old school style better. There are some games like Earthbound and Chrono Trigger that are not entirely turn-based, but they are a little mixture of both. In the example of Earthbound, your health meters gradually go down instead of just dropping quickly, meaning if you mashed buttons quick enough to cast a healing PSI or get a healing item out before the ticker goes to zero, then your ally is saved. I found that to be innovative; it kept me from getting bored in the game, at least.

Turn based battle will always be my favorite. Active battle systems are great in their own right, but my idea of a great RPG is one where you can take a few moments to size your enemy up, and plan ahead for the entire battle, not make hasty decisions in an attempt to quickly finish off the enemy.

I prefer the fast paced ones, like Crisis core and FFXIII, it seems very innovative and smart.

I don't mind the active battle systems. As for stuff like Dragon Age 2, not so happy with, I could barely deal with Dragon Age Origins battle style. Now I do like the King's Field series, I love those games. Only issue I had with Demon's Souls is there wasn't a first person view, I think it would have made the game a lot better.

I can see the merits of say FF12, I liked that game and its battle system, but turn-based will always be my favorite. There's something about knowing when someone's turn is coming up and they are low on health, so you have to decide whether it is better finishing off your enemy or healing your teammate, the chance of them dying and needing to use a resurrect item or finishing that almost-dead baddie off.

Star Ocean 3 Till the End of Time has the one of the best RPG elements ever. Watch it on Youtube or buy the game you will have hours of fun. This game is just as epic and fun as Final Fantasy 7 & 8 believe me when I tell you that. Symbology, Battle Skills, and unique characters make for a truckload of fun.

it would have to be new school call sure u can just button bash but it needs more depth than a turn based, you need to actively think fast and be aware of whats going on not just waiting for your turn to be over and it generally makes the game flow faster.

i love the turn based style better, because it lets you think of a strategy of how to beat monsters and bosses. I love the old school Final Fantasies and all.

my favorites of the button mashers are Shining Souls 1 and 2, and that's it.

I liked the classic turn based battle system. It was strategical, but not to the point that it was frustrating as hell to figure out. It was a very wide learning curve that rook NO time at all to learn, but you could experiment with and find cool ways to end fights.
