Spider-Man 2
01-04-15 09:10 PM
Spider-Man's Greatest Video Game?
Spider-Man 2 is a video game about everybody’s favorite superhero (not counting Batman, Superman, Iron Man, or the Hulk)! Based on the movie of the same name, you play as Spider-Man as he delivers pizzas, struggles to maintain his relationships with his friends and family, takes pictures of stuff, and retrieves balloons like only a real superhero can! When you’re not doing that, you can fight crime, swing through New York City, and bring down some of Spider-Man’s deadliest foes! Being based on a movie, some may have their doubts about this game. But can it stand on its own?

Graphics: 9
Spider-Man 2’s design is just what you would expect of a well done Xbox game. The effects look good, you can tell who the characters are supposed to be, and New York City actually resembles New York City. The only thing that I really point out as a problem with the game is that many of the non-playable characters that are walking around on the street look rather odd. When it comes down to it, the graphics in this game really are amazing.

Sound: 8
The sound in Spider-Man 2 is amazing as well. First and most importantly, the actors from the movie reprised their roles for this game. Because of this, all of the characters sound identical to their movie counterparts. Besides this, the rest of the game is composed really well. The music, while by no means the greatest in video game history, is still very good for what you’d expect from a game based on some Spider-Man movie. The sound in this game is definitely done right.

Addictiveness: 6
Spider-Man 2 can be quite addicting at times, especially towards the beginning. When you first start playing the game, swinging off buildings across Manhattan can be quite entertaining. There’s also enjoyment to be found in beating the crap out of criminals. Despite this, the game play can get rather monotonous by the end of the game. Once you’ve completed all of the objective... Worms Forts: Under Siege

Worms: Blowing Up Buildings
Worms Forts: Under Siege is yet another game where a bunch of homicidal worms blow the ever living crap out of each other using a ridiculous arsenal of various explosives. This Worms game, however, has a twist. Not only are the worms throwing explosives at each other, but now they’re blowing up their homes as well. Worms Forts: Under Siege brings in a whole new game play by introducing forts for the worms to launch attacks from.

Graphics: 3
Despite the fact that this is the second Worms game to be in 3D, it seems there is no improvement in the graphics. Worms Forts:: Under Siege was released around the end of the Xbox’s lifespan, yet it still looks like a relic from the Play Station or Nintendo 64. The game’s saving grace is the collection of weapons. The weapons are really well designed despite their crude appearance. The graphics on this game could definitely use some improvement.

Sound: 4
While it is an improvement on the graphics, the sound doesn’t present much more to the game. Sure, the explosions are nice. The worms can say funny things every once in a while. Except when it comes down to it, that’s really about it. There’s nothing else that’s particularly interesting about the sound in this game.

Addictiveness: 7
Worms Forts: Under Siege does have some interesting game play involved. The primary goal in the game is to use your various guns, bombs, and sweet old ladies to destroy your opponent’s worms and fort. Whether you play a simple versus game with a friend, or a one on one on one on one with low gravity and maximum ammunition, Worms Forts can provide fun gameplay for some time. After a while it can get somewhat monotonous, but there’s nothing quite like strapping an explosive to a hippo and crashing it into a hospital. That makes sense in context. I swear.

The little bit of story that exists in Worms Forts is just used to set the stage for ... Read the rest of this Review
Grand Theft Auto Vice City

Grand Theft Auto: Guns, Explosions, and Chainsaws
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is the second game in the Grand Theft Auto series to go into the third dimension. It took everything Grand Theft Auto III did right, and it expanded on that. Even today, Vice City is still regarded as a notable game in the series, standing against titles such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto V. Even though it’s been redone several times over, Vice City still stands as a great Grand Theft Auto game and a great game in general. Now let’s see why exactly this is.

Graphics: 8
For an Xbox game, the graphics in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City are pretty good. They aren’t exactly the graphics of Grand Theft Auto V, but that’s to be expected when you consider the ten year difference between the two games. Given the resources they had at the time, they managed to make a pretty good looking game. The city was designed very well, and all of the cars look sleek and well put together (you know, until you crash them, which you inevitably well). The character designs are crude and rather generic, but they are still about the quality expected of an Xbox game such as this one. Most importantly, there’s blood. You can’t have Grand Theft Auto without that sweet, sweet blood.

Sound: 7
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City offers just about what you would expect in terms of sound. It has good sound effects, the voice acting is decent, and it has some good music. The chainsaw sound effect is good too. Nothing particularly stands out other than the occasional song, but it gets the job done.

Addictiveness: 10
If you like the Grand Theft Auto games, then you’ll be hooked as soon as you start this one. It has a sort of humble simplicity compared to some of the more recent games, but it definitely has plenty to offer. Who knew it could be so fun to hit a pedestrian with a golf club, assault a police officer, get in a high speed chase, die, respawn, steal an ambulance, and drive ... Read the rest of this Review
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Moderately Fun Video Game
Harry Potter is one of the biggest book and movie sensations there have ever been. But how does that translate into a video game? As most of us know, licensed video games are generally not the greatest. They can be put together poorly, or they can have generic gameplay that doesn’t offer anything to the player. Honestly, most of them just suck. Licensed video games are also infamous for straying significantly from their source material. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, however, is the first of the Harry Potter video games that follows along with the movie it represents. But let’s break it down and see just what works and what doesn’t.

Graphics: 9
Being an earlier video game on the Xbox 360, the graphics can’t be expected to match those of the later releases. Despite this, it still does a pretty good job. The characters look just like the actors that play them. Hogwarts looks great too. It is clear that a lot of work went into developing the setting so it’s appealing to the player, and this work was not in vain. It’s also worth pointing out that the spells are bright and colorful too, which is always a plus. Though it doesn’t have the sleek graphics that some Xbox 360 games boast, Order of the Phoenix can definitely hold its own.

Sound: 7
To put it bluntly, the sound in Order of the Phoenix isn’t anything special. It has some basic music, sound effects make the impression they need to make, and all of the sounds are where they need to be. It works, but just being adequate won’t allow it to rise to the top. The reason it got as high of a score as it did would be the fact that many of the characters are voiced by their actors from the films. There may be some lines that get repeated over and over and the dialogue may seem rather generic, but the characters sound like themselves.

Addictiveness: 6
Order of the Phoenix can be very interesting when you first start playing... Read the rest of this Review
Vexx

An Obscure Mario Clone
Vexx is an action/adventure platform game released in 2003 by Acclaim Studios. In Vexx, the goal is to travel across several unique worlds in an attempt to collect various objects, which in turn allow you to access more worlds. In case you haven’t picked up on it yet, Vexx is a blatant clone of Super Mario 64. With that said, this review will not make any comparisons between the two, and will be judging Vexx based solely on its own merits. Now let’s take a closer look, and see if this obscure Xbox game is worth a playthrough.

Graphics: 9
Vexx’s greatest strength is easily the level of detail and skill put into the graphic designs of the game. Though the graphics carry the distinct plastic-like appearance of their generation, the makers of the game were very careful in their level design. Each world has its own unique feel, some even inspiring a level of awe. The character design of this game should not be overlooked either. Every character from the pointy eared Vexx to the flabby Sumo Kin, has their own unique and clever design. The graphics of Vexx really represent what the Xbox is capable of.

Sound: 7
Trailing along right behind the graphics would be the sound. The music in Vexx is definitely on the right track. Though it doesn’t rival what are often considered the greatest video game soundtracks, the soundtrack in Vexx is perfectly capable of pulling its own weight. Each world has its own specific music, which really adds to the game as a whole. The sound effects are also worth noting, though they can grow old and they begin to sound generic over time. Vexx’s main weakness as far as sound goes is the voice acting. At best, the acting is mediocre. Cheesy at worst. The characters take themselves far too seriously and lack any real emotion.

Addictive: 6
The goal in Vexx is to travel the various worlds to collect the wraithhearts. How addictive this game is depends on how much patience you have for ... Read the rest of this Review
Tom Clancy\'s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

Stealth Gameplay at its Finest
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is the third game in the Splinter Cell series. Once again, the player takes control of American spy Sam Fisher in an attempt to avert global catastrophe. Chaos Theory is a stealth game, which makes it very different from most action-based games. Now let's see just what Chaos Theory has to offer as both a stealth game and a video game in general.

Graphics: 10
For a game on the original Xbox, Chaos Theory has exceptional graphics. The graphics in this game can easily compete with many of the titles on the Xbox 360. There is immense detail involved, especially for its time. All of the characters are realistic and all of the settings are well designed. The lighting system in this game is of particular interest as well. As the goal of the game is to stay in the shadows, emphasis has been put on the lighting system. When it comes down to it, the graphics in this game are flawless.

Sound: 10
The sound from Chaos Theory does not fall short of excellence. All of the ambient sounds and sound effects fall into line perfectly. The soundtrack is one of the best. The voice acting is just right. There really aren't any major problems with the sound in Chaos Theory. It's about as good as they get on an original Xbox game.

Addictiveness: 8
In Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, you do not directly attack the enemy (usually). Instead, you work around them and take them out silently. This makes for surprisingly addictive game play. The ability to decide just how you're going to get past the guards, and then putting your plan into action, is very satisfying. The problem with Chaos Theory is the fact that it's a stealth game. This, by its very nature, means that it is going to be a very slow-paced game. This will make it much more difficult for less patient people to play.

Story: 8
The story in Chaos Theory is very well developed. A crisis begins to develop when Japan creates a defense force that threatens North Ko... Read the rest of this Review
Halo 2

The Best Xbox Game of them All
Halo 2 was the best selling video game on the Xbox. Squeal to the hit video game Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2 took what worked and added so much more to it. Not only did Halo 2 end up being the most successful game on the original Xbox, but it won numerous different awards as well. But did Halo 2 really do it right? Or did it just sell because people are suckers for squeals? Let's take a look at the specifics and decide for ourselves. Is Halo 2 worth being considered as the best game on the Xbox?

Graphics: 8
The graphics in Halo 2 are a major improvement from the original. Though they still have a plastic-like feel to them, that can be expected from a video game on the Xbox. But as far as Xbox games can go, Halo 2 actually does really good with graphics. There's a lot of detail in everything and overall it's just really well done. You can see way more in this game than you can in many of its time. Though there may still be room for improvement, it was still exceptional for the time it was made.

Sound: 9
The sound in Halo 2 is excellent. First of all, the soundtrack is amazing. It is a perfect addition to the game. The sound effects are good too. There are many gunshots of various types as well as explosions throughout this game, and they all sound right. The vehicles are good, the ambient sound, and even the miscellaneous sound effects. The voice acting, though nothing amazing, is still worth noting. Most of the lines sound authentic and can be very cleverly done at times.

Addictiveness: 8
Halo 2 is your typical shooter, except it has sci-fi elements to it. This combination provides a fun game that can be played for hours. Unfortunately, like many first person shooters, Halo 2 has very little variety in its game play and it can grow old over time. But if you're into shooting stuff with bullets and plasma blasts alike, then this game can provide you with a few hours of fun.

Call of Duty: World at War
04-23-14 04:03 PM
The Fifth Call of Duty
Call of Duty: World at War is the fifth game in the Call of Duty series and the prequel to the "Call of Duty: Black Ops" sub-series. This game was made shortly after Call of Duty first started to gain a significant fan base, but does the game reflect that? Let's look at the specifics and see just what World at War has in store for anyone who might want to play one of Call of Duty's earlier games, made all the way back in 2008.

Graphics: 9
As a game that is trying to replicate a gritty warlike look, it has developed a sort of gritty warlike look. The scenery is really well done and everything can be seen in great detail. The characters also have a lot of details about them, with their clothing and faces done very well and looking very realistic. The weapons are fantastic. All of the weapons look very good and similar to their real world counterparts. The gun shots and explosions all look great. What I really think compliments this game is all of the gore. Now, I know what you're thinking. But I think war needs to be captured in a more honest light, and the graphics presented by this game do just that.

Sound: 8
The sound in this game is really good as well. Everything sounds genuine, the weapon sounds are pretty good, and the ambient sounds all fit in just right. The music in this game is great. It pitches just the right tone needed to set up the game. If I were rating the music alone, I'd give it a 10/10. The voice acting is pretty good too. Though some of it is a little dry, the rest is very good and well done. The main problem with the voice acting is that a large portion of it involves screaming, much of it being very over the top and hard to take seriously. But for what it's worth, the sound in World at War is great.

Addictiveness: 6
Call of Duty: World at War can be addictive at times. You run around, you shoot stuff, you blow stuff up, and you listen to Roebuck and Reznov scream in your face. It's all good fun. But after a... Read the rest of this Review
Simpsons, The: Road Rage

The Simpsons: Repetitive Reckless Driving
The Simpsons: Road Rage is a simple driving game where the goal is to use your vehicle as a taxi to take various characters from The Simpsons around the city of Springfield. It's a simple game, but it does provide some fun game play. This game is geared more towards the casual gamer, and its various aspects reflect that. Now let's dive in to see just what this game has to offer, and whether or not it's even worth playing.

Graphics: 6
Before anything else, you've got to remember this is an Xbox game. You can't expect the graphics to be anything exceptional, and they really aren't. They're pretty much the average graphics you'd expect from an early Xbox game. However, you can tell what everything is, everything that you see is very unique, and the world around you is very colorful. Though this game does not provide anything extraordinary as far as graphics go, they do good enough to get by.

Sound: 4
The Simpsons: Road Rage has some basic sound effects, but nothing really spectacular. Even though everything has the right sound, all of the sounds are rather uninteresting to say the least. The music is fairly weak as well. The game's only strong point in the sound department are the lines. All of the characters sound right and the lines can be rather amusing at times. Unfortunately, you only need to play the game for a short time before you begin to hear the same lines being recycled over and over again. The sounds could definitely offer more than they did.

Addictiveness: 8
The game's strongest point is, without a doubt, how addictive it can get. There's nothing like simple game play to keep people coming back, and the goal of this game really couldn't get much simpler. You can play this game several times without it really getting old. Unfortunately, this isn't one of those games you can really get into. It can be repetitive, and that can turn many people away. But if you don't mind performing mindless repetitive tasks, then maybe y... Read the rest of this Review
Tom Clancy\'s Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
04-20-14 10:04 PM
A True Stealth Game
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow is the second game in the Splinter Cell series. Splinter Cell is a stealth series, meaning that a direct assault is rarely the answer. Instead, this game requires the main character Sam Fisher to use quick wits and lots of patience. But does this make a good game? Or is Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow just another title that's not worth a second glance? Let's look at the specifics and decide for ourselves.

Graphics: 7
There really isn't anything wrong with the graphics in this game. With that said, there isn't exactly anything spectacular about them either. It's pretty clear what everything is and they do have a level of detail to them, but there really isn't anything that stands out. The lighting is interesting in this game, as it is a vital concept to the gameplay. Many areas are very dark, and this is where you're expected to be when you're not moving. Of course, the game also gives you night vision, which makes everything much easier to see (though it does make everything black and white). One problem is that the animation is a little odd. The main character's animations are fairly smooth, especially when moving about. But the other characters can seem a little awkward at times. However, it is a game for the original Xbox, and this must be taken into consideration. In conclusion, the graphics aren't terrible, but they aren't anything to get excited about either.

Sound: 8
The sound in Pandora Tomorrow is pretty good, though it does have its problems. Most of the sound effects are pretty good. The weapons work, the gadgets work, even the sounds of the environment work pretty well. What doesn't work, however, is the voice acting. Some of the characters are okay. But some of the characters have very weak lines and sound very robotic. Lambert commits this offense throughout the game. And then of course many of the guards have obiously scripted lines that could have been improved. But despite the problem with t... Read the rest of this Review
Batman: Arkham Asylum

Batman Changing Video Games?
Batman: Arkham Asylum is the first game in the Arkham series of Batman video games. It is widely praised as being a revolutionary game for both superhero games and action/adventure games. It has also been widely regarded as proof that licensed video games can be done well. In light of this positive reception, it has won numerous awards for several different aspects of the game. But does it deserve all of this hype? Or is it just a game that sold well because it has the word "Batman" on the cover? Let's take a closer look and see for ourselves.

Graphics: 10
First, let's take a look at the graphics. I have no problem with this, because the graphics are definitely something to look at. Everything has been done flawlessly. You can see all of the grime on Batman's face as he trudges through Arkham Asylum. You can see the detailed flesh of the goons, you can see every muscle bulging on the stronger characters, and you can even see the little cuts and scrapes picked up by the characters. Speaking of cuts and scrapes, this game has introduced another detail to Batman's design that further ascends his appearance. As the game moves on, Batman's costume takes more wear and tear. By the end of the game, there are numerous tears all across it. If this isn't amazing, then I don't know what is.

Another aspect of the graphics that is worth consideration is the animation of the characters. This game has found just the right combination of fluidity and structure that allow realistic looking characters to inhabit the asylum. Everything from Batman's acrobatics to the Joker's waltzing looks totally natural and realistic.

Sound: 9
The visuals of this game check out, but what about the audio? When it comes down to it, the audio of this game is pretty good. All of the sound is very natural, but still very dynamic. Everything sounds just as it should, and there aren't any problems with the sound effects worth noting. Aside from the effects, it only gets b... Read the rest of this Review
Halo: Combat Evolved

The Halo That Started Them All
Halo: Combat Evolved is the first game in the acclaimed Halo series and a major influence in the modern first person shooter. Not to mention it practically saved the Xbox from complete failure. Developed by Bungie, Halo has since been hailed as one of the greatest shooters, if not one of the greatest games, to have ever been created. Now I will take a look at it and decide just where this game stands, and whether it really is as great as many claim it is.

Graphics: 7
When you first start to play Halo: Combat Evolved, you may notice that everything looks like it's made of plastic. With today's graphics, that would be an issue. However, Halo was released in the early days of the Xbox. At the time, these graphics were the standard. And despite the plastic-like look of most objects and people, Halo did do one thing very well. The explosions and other gun effects were decent for their time. Nothing particularly amazing, but still better than the average game. In summary, the graphics are good for their time, but still not perfect.

Sound: 9
Next up, the sound. Halo's sound works great. The gunshots match their weapons, the soldiers sound authentic, and the explosions are, well, explosive. Everything has its own distinct sound, and everything has just the right sound to compliment it. Even the low rumbly voice of the elites and high squeaky voice of the grunts both work rather nicely (as long as you're not hoping for a scary enemy, that is). But what really sets Halo above and beyond its peers is the music. I had decided on this the day I played Halo for the first time, and I still stand by it to this day: the music in Halo is my favorite in all of gaming. I don't know what it is, but Halo: Combat Evolved just has really great music. Overall, Halo has pretty good sound. I've heard better sound effects, but such instances were few and far in between.

Addictiveness: 8
The goal of Halo is to either run or drive around, shoot as many alie... Read the rest of this Review
Wolfenstein 3D

The Father of the First Person Shooter
Wolfenstein 3D... oh do we go back far. This is one of the games that really got me into gaming. I mean, yeah, I've played video games before this one. But this was the first game I can honestly say I was obsessed with. But now I'm back all these years later, and I'm not here to honor it. I'm here to criticize it. Will it hold out against my analytical wrath?

Graphics: 6
Let's start with the graphics. If you just picked up the game and started playing right now, you'll probably notice the graphics. More specifically, you'll notice that they are somewhat crude and tend to blur really badly at a distance. However, you must remember that this is a game on the Game Boy Advance. Graphics are almost always crude on the GBA. Considering the time period, it really could be worse. But there was definitely room for improvement.

Sound: 5
To say the least, the sound in this game is questionable. There are two main problems with the sound. First of all, there's no soundtrack. Second, many of the sounds seem out of place. Some of the sound effects sound echo static. Others just sound off, like the odd springy sound effect when the player grabs treasure. However, there are sounds that it gets right. The soldiers lines sound authentic (despite the fact that they sound like broken records) and the gunshots sound like gunshots. It splits even on this one.

Addictiveness: 9
Wolfenstein 3D is very addictive. It is the father of the modern first person shooter, and rightly so. The relatively simple gameplay can really go a long way. When you first start the game, you don't really expect it to be that much. But then you play it once, and you realize how fun it is to take down the SS using your minigun. The only problem is that it can get repetitive over time.

Story: 3
The story in this game has potential, but the potential is never really realized. Anyone who reads about the game knows that you are a soldier in World War II, and you're f... Read the rest of this Review
Duck Hunt

Duck Hunt: NES Classic
Duck Hunt is probably one of the most well known NES games, and for good reason. Anyone who was a child when the NES came out (and many of their children) probably has fond memories of taking the zapper and holding it up to the screen one nobody was looking. This game is a classic on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and it's pretty clear why.

Graphics: 5
The graphics in this game aren't necessarily bad, but they're nothing great. Compared to other games of its time, they're so-so. There are far better NES games, but Duck Hunt still has its own style. Some of the drawings are rather crude, but it does have some redeeming values. I personally think the ducks stand out from the rest of the game as particularly good. Not terrible, but nothing exceptional.

Sound: 7
As far as the Nintendo Entertainment System goes, this game has some decent sound effects. The music at the start of the game is nothing bad, and everything sounds like its supposed to. You hear the dog barking, you hear the wings flapping, and you hear the ducks quacking. Much of the game is silent though, which could obviously be improved on.

Addictiveness: 9
Addictiveness is definitely this game's strength. There's something about shooting at little images of ducks that just never gets old. Much of it has to do with the simplicity and repetition that it provides while still presenting a genuine challenge (especially later on). Many people have watched their lives waste away to nothing as they sat there shooting at the ducks. Okay, that might be a slight exaggeration. But when it all comes down to it, this game is very fun and very addictive.

Story: -
No story here. You're shooting stuff, and that's about it. The closest thing to an antagonist in this game is that good-for-nothing dog.

Depth: 4
This game has very little to offer. The only thing you can do is point and shoot. The main redeeming aspect of Duck Hunt as far as depth goes is the f... Read the rest of this Review
