Dragon Bowl I can't believe this exists...
Tactics Ogre - The Knight of Lodis (mode 7) Try it in Mednafen. The other version of the game works in that. This one probably does as well.

Demon Front (ver. 105)
10-30-12 07:55 PM
An Obscure Gem
Working as a Game Tester, it's my job to test all sorts of games that I've never heard of before. The great thing about this is that sometimes I'll discover new games that are simply loads of fun. Such is the case for Demon Front.

I grew up on SNK games, quickly becoming a huge fan of their titles. One series in particularly was a Side-scrolling Shooter by the name of Metal Slug. One of the things I noticed first when testing out Demon Front is how reminiscent it looked of a Metal Slug game. It too was a side-scrolling shooter with platforming elements and really had an overall similar feel. However, this game manages to take an already fun game like Metal Slug and improve upon it.

Demon Front features a cast of four different playable characters. Each character has a special helper spirit thingy that lends them unique abilities. These can be special charge shots, shields, or even altering movement. Due to this, each character plays differently and isn't just a carbon copy of the others like most similar games tend to do. It's a lot of fun to strategically make use of these special powers in addition to your regular shots to enhance gameplay.

Graphics: 9 - While not as polished as the Metal Slug series, I still found the graphics to be very good. They're very clear and vibrant with lots of colorful sprites and animations. The explosions and shot graphics are very well done. I also appreciate that fact that each character has their own discernibly unique design rather than just being a custom head planted on the same generic body.

Sound: 6 - This may be a bit unfair since the emulator reports the sound emulation isn't 100% so it's possible the sound quality of the real game is a lot higher than what the RGR represents... still it didn't have terrible sound. The shot and explosion SFX seemed appropriate and there were even voice effects. The background music felt a bit bland though and wasn't especially memorab... Read the rest of this Review
Touhoumon Blue Version

A Very Interesting Hack
So here we have Touhoumon... a Pokemon hack changing all of the Pokemon to characters from the Touhou universe. Similar to Moemon hacks, you're basically replacing random animal and plantlike creatures with cute anime girls. This makes the concept more appealing to some.

But let's be clear here... this isn't a mere graphics hack. Much more about the game is changed to fully give the Touhou experience. We're not just changing the look of Pokemon but keeping them what they originally were otherwise... we're transforming them into Touhou characters. As a result, they need new types, move lists, and evolutionary chains/requirements. This is a fairly extensive hack, though not as robust as ones that redo all the maps and story. The original storyline and maps remain intact. Only the things you collect and fight with are changing here.

This particular Touhoumon game, Blue, is a hack of Pokemon Fire Red. Your three traditional starters are replaced with Reimu, Marisa, and Sakuya. This is a very sensible choice as Reimu is pretty much THE Touhou protagonist, Marisa is often a playable character in fan games, and Sakuya has been used as a protagonist before as well (Touhouvanian). It's really a weird adjustment with the type changes though. You don't get Fire/Water/Grass in this game. Reimu is Normal and Sakuya is Ice/Steel, for example. This changes your approach to the gyms a bit to start. The wild Touhou to catch early on differ dramatically in types from the original game as well.

What really drew me into this game is that I really like Touhou characters. Many bare a special charm. I'm really bad at the Touhou style gameplay (Bullet Hell), however. This makes experiencing these characters very difficult to me. It's only through fan games that I can really take in the Touhou experience. That makes this game such an incredible find as Pokemon is an easy enough game to play and enjoy and it makes them have to pull in pretty much every Touhou... Read the rest of this Review
King of Fighters 2003, The (NGM-2710)

The End of the NeoGeo Era for KoF
Well, here we have it: King of Fighters 2003. This is a strange entry in the series for many ways. It makes the last time a KoF game was made on the NeoGeo board. At the same time that it's an ending, it's also a beginning as it starts a new saga in the KoF storyline (Tales of Ash). This game is also the first KoF game to incorporate a tag-style system to the game reminiscent of Capcom's Marvel vs. games. This tag system is highly controversial among fans. Many dislike it and some accuse them of just ripping off of MvC2. One must remember, however, that SNK did team fighting before anyone else. They've KoF is a series that has been running team-based combat since 1994. They just normally have fighting commence in independent rounds, not enabling switching.

While the traditional method of combat in KoF has its charm and I definitely like it, I can easily appreciate the change of pace the tag system offers this entry. Instead of multiple, almost unconnected fights, the battle now seems like one fluid, cohesive battle between two sides. They all cooperatively work together to take down the other team. It really feels more like legitimate teams rather than each member doing their own thing independently.

Another notable difference in this entry involves the engine mechanics themselves. Gameplay feels more fluid than every before. There seems to be an increased move buffer and controls are a lot looser with more lax timing for execution. The combat itself is much faster paced that normal, making matches more exciting.

Graphics: 9 - Okay, let's be honest... these graphics are pretty poor for 2003, but you have to remember that it's running on an arcade board built in the early 90s. Considering how limited their hardware must have been, they did a pretty good job on this game.

Sound: 7 - Finally free of Eolith's influence, SNK is able to start getting back to quality KoF music. While they haven't fully returned to o... Read the rest of this Review
Shining Force - Resurrection of the Dark Dragon

Classic SRPG Greatness
Shining Force - Resurrection of Dark Dragon for the GBA is a remake of the first Shining Force game on the Sega Genesis. It was an early, simple strategy RPG that still managed to be fun. The GBA remake adds some new characters and features to further enhance the game and is easily the definitive version to play.

A comparative rival series is Fire Emblem, which this game has some similarities to. I do find the Genesis version to be better than the Fire Emblem games that were out at the time and even the GBA remake can hold up to the GBA Fire Emblem games. One thing in particular that I like about Fire Emblem is that even though ranged attacks typically are only 2 panels away in length, magic spells can be upgraded as the character levels and give you a better range and targeting area. This is something that many future SRPGs have adapted and Fire Emblem seems to miss.

Another charm of Fire Emblem that's mostly unique to it is the ability to freely roam world maps as if you were playing a standard RPG. Most SRPGs just take you from map to map without any movement control. Here, you can walk around towns to shop. Walk from town to town and you literally walk right onto your battle map when the next battle is to occur. I must prefer this to the forced linear progression of ushering you directly to your next location that most SRPGs have.

Like most SRPGs, you have a variety of character types. All characters are set in stone and not really customizable. They have their own unique abilities and movement styles depending on their class. Some characters are melee, some are archers, some are mages. You can also class change to upgrade them to a more powerful class at level 20.

Some of the newer characters also create some really interesting additions to the game. I really like the card system to give you special abilities and the concept of cloning a character as an extra fighter that can be defeated without consequences.

Persona 4: Arena

Throwdown! With Persona 4: Arena
What do you get when you take a niche JRPG with a really awesome cast of characters and cross it with a fighting game engine akin to BlazBlue? Persona 4: Arena!

So, I was a huge fan of Persona 4 and like Persona 3 a good bit too (though I felt the cast was weaker in that one). I'm also an avid fighting game fan. I like BlazBlue's game play, but most of the characters in it are unappealing to me, so it didn't seem like it'd be that enjoyable to play. So when I heard there was going to be a fighting game based on Persona 4, of course I was excited. When I found that Arc System Works was developing it, I was deeply intrigued.

Persona 4 Arena takes the entire playable cast of Persona 4 and manages to squeeze in 4 characters from Persona 3 (in my opinion, the three best playable ones and a really interesting one that originally was not playable). They also have invented a new character for the story who's all kinds of neat. This gave me what is perhaps the first ever fighting game I've played where I enjoyed every single character in the roster. That's definitely earning this title some bonus points.

The gameplay is solid, employing smooth and fluid 2D fighting mechanics with flashy special maneuvers and Instant-Kill abilities. The action is fast paced and easy to pick up even if you've never played an Arc System fighter before.

Graphics: While still using 2D sprites, the graphics manage to be rather stunning. All sprites are hi-res and very polished to perfectly capture the look of the characters they represent. There are many detailed animations that move fluidly and nice special effects graphics.

Sound: The soundtrack mostly features songs taken from the original sound tracks of Persona 3 and 4. It also remixes a couple of themes (such as P4's battle theme and Heartful Cry from 3) and there are all new music for the characters' stages. The reused music was good before and still good now. While reusin... Read the rest of this Review

I. Introduction

I decided I wanted to start contributing some Walkthroughs for the site because there don't seem to be a great amount of them here and they could be really helpful. I'm going to start with a game I've played in and out. The Walkthrough isn't finished yet, but I'll work on it over time. At least it's a start, right? This should be mostly useable for any version of the game, but I'm playing the SNES version along side it since I do not have the PS1 nor DS versions of the game. I know at least the PS1 version adds a few things (like an extra tech), but as far as progressing the story, it should be the same.
II. Characters
Crono
Element: Lightning
Weapon: Katana

Crono is the main character of the story, and the first one you get to play as. Not much can be said for his personality, because he completely lacks one. He's a mute, never uttering a single line of dialouge in the whole game. However, he is, being the main character, the best character in the game, and essential to your party. Later in the game he gets very good spells, including a Life spell and the strongest attack in the game, Luminare.

Marle
Element: Ice
Weapon: Bow

Marle is the wild and rebellious princess of Guardia, Nadia. She runs into Crono at the Millennial Fair. As the game progresses, she becomes quite fond of him. He's a good healer, but not very good in turns of fighting. She gets Life2 and Cure2, which are very handy, and her attack magic is decent.

Lucca
Element: Fire
Weapon: Gun

Lucca is a scientist and friend of Crono. You first meet her in the game at the Millennial Fair while she's testing out her la... Read the rest of this Guide
