U.N. Squadron

U.N. Squadron
Area 88 is under attack and it is up to you to save the good guys from disaster. U.N. Squadron is another shoot em up on the SNES, so love or hate 'em this is it. For me this game takes everything from the genre and does it right, not adding much to the standard recipe, but hey why fix what isn't broke.

The controls for the game are crisp and responsive, and also fairly basic. You have your directional buttons to control direction of course! Then the default controls are set to have X for changing weapons Y for firing your basic weapon and B for firing your special weapons. For my personal preference they make it easy to change this set up and I like to change the basic attack from Y to A since I just feel like A should be the most used button and in this game the default controls leave it unused.

This game has a more modern setting straying from the standard futuristic setting. I prefer this because it makes the game feel more realistic. Actually becoming immersed in my ship and feeling like I am in control of a fighter jet.

GRAPHICS: 9
I really like the graphics for this game. The intro right away took me into the game and had me impressed by the 3D effects. I was surprised at how well it was done for a SNES game. The game contains different levels that have unique themes that bring you into the games different areas. Their is also a lot of different enemy's and bosses that each look like proper time was spent giving them individuality. I think the only thing that may have been better done for this game would be flashier special effects for the explosions and different special weapons.

SOUND: 8
I enjoyed the games soundtrack and thought the music was fitting for the games theme. The different levels also have their own songs so you are not left hearing the same music over and over. Again one thing that may have been done better was the games special effect ... Read the rest of this Review
Mario Pinball Land

Mario Pinball Land
My first impression of Mario Pinball Land was wondering if this was Nintendo's imitation of Sonic Spinball. I guess if Sonic had it, Nintendo just couldn't let Mario go without! Upon further investigation though I soon realized everyone's favorite Plumber actually took on the Pinball genre before that super fast blue hedge hog.

Although the games concept might seem stolen, it is still pretty comical seeing the in-game animations of Mario getting smashed into a pinball. Sonic may seem more fit to becoming a Pinball since he can roll into a ball anyway but I personally always preferred Mario over Sonic.

The gameplay is as basics as it gets, it's a pinball game! You have control of your left and right flippers and that is it! The only other controls is occasionally pushing A for certain commands like selecting items and B to use your items. That is one aspect about this game that very few other Pinball games offer is the ability to find or buy items and power ups. I think this adds a much needed game play boost in a somewhat stale Pinball game formula.

GRAPHICS: 9.5
The graphics for this game look incredible for the GBA. If I didn't know better, I would think this game was made for a console and not a handheld because they are that good. All of the iconic characters from the Mario universe are brought to life in vibrant colors and are obvious to tell who they represent. For all the fast paced action that a Pinball game offers, the game does not slow up or lag like some games, running smoothly throughout.

SOUND: 7
The games music doesn't do much to stand out. I feel like some of the classic soundtracks of all the previous Mario games could've been better utilized. Although not perfect the games music at least is not annoying but it wont be something that stands out about the game. The sound effects were done well, bringing back some timeless Mario effects.<... Lord of the Rings, The - The Third Age

The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age
Here is a game that I never actually got the chance to play until becoming a member here on vizzed, it is a game that has both a lot of selling factors but also a lot of bad things. I don't think you need look further than my username to know that I am a Lord of the Rings fan, although I actually was a fan before the movies were even around and did read all of the books before the movies. This is another game that is more based off of the movies.

By the title of the game I was actually expecting the games setting to be more directed at events before the main Lord of the Rings story, being as the 3rd age began much before that story, but I was somewhat disappointed when you only visit that time frame at the beginning tutorials and after that the game takes place in the usual Lord of the Rings time frame. For anyone who hasn't already read the books or seen the movies to understand this story then I strongly recommend you go out and do so. For video game players it should nearly be a must because JRR Tolkiens writings played a huge impact on what we now know as the 'fantasy' genre which is hugely popular among video games. Our perception today of what an Elf or Dwarf or Orc or even Troll might be a little different if not for JRR Tolkien.

The game offers a fresh look on the Lord of the Rings gaming scene from the popular RPG to being a turn based strategy game. The game play is reminiscent of Final Fantasy tactics but also does differ from that formula. Unlike most games of that genre, your units are not all allowed to move once per turn but instead your Hero or Commanding units have a certain amount of Leadership which controls how many times you may move your units in that Commanders zone. Each level has different objectives you must complete for victory, varying from defeating a certain foe or a certain number of foes to capturing and controlling certain key points on the map.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Ultimate Fighting Championship
Here is a game released for the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC that shares strange similarity's as the company it was made after. The game was released in the year 2000 when the UFC was owned by a different company than the one that currently owns it. The UFC was even less known back then and was dieing as a promotion and as a company. Since the UFC was almost entirely the face of the sport known as MMA or Mixed Martial Arts it was a dark time for fans and fighters alike.

The game features 8 fighters of this era, some that would move on to become the face of the sport and others whos names have all but been forgotten. Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Eugene Jackson, Pedro Rizzo, Frank Shamrock, Guy Mezger, Kevin Randleman, and Evan Tanner are the playable fighters. Playing this game now is interesting because it is a look back at how these fighters started their careers, and you can see in retrospect who moved on to greatness like Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Frank Shamrock , and Evan Tanner.

The game honestly does not hold up all to well to the test of time. I think it is ironic that this is the case because like I said the company at the time of this games making was also close to bankruptcy. It was not until the UFC was sold by its owners at this time SEG to ZUFFA which is the current owning company of the UFC that the UFC not only became a successful business but a business that is worth in the billions of dollars and is now claiming MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world.

GRAPHICS: 6
Well since we are judging a game on the gameboy color , you honestly can never expect much out of the graphics. The biggest thing that could have done better for the games graphics is the fighters sprites. The fighters are only barely distinguishable from their real life likenesses.

SOUND: 6
The sound is not really noticeable but also does not detract from the game. Th... Read the rest of this Review

RAMPART
Here is a game that was most definitely ahead of its time. I never played this game back when it was released, only discovering it while at a friends house. He told me it was a game I would probably like which was what made me give this game a chance. I was not disappointed, for a game made so long ago, this game still holds up to the test of time.

You take the role of King and thus commanding your Kingdom. You must oversee important tasks like your Kingdoms expansion, maintenance, protection, and equipping your Kingdom with as much firepower as you can. In single player enemy ships will attack your Kingdom while in multiplayer you can actually fight a friends Kingdom.

The games controls are fairly simple being a NES game. The Directional Pad will control your cursor, while the A button is used to place walls and cannons and also Fire your cannons. The B button can be used to speed up the movement of your cursor when held down.

Ramparts game play is divided into different phases. You begin by selecting the area of combat. Then the first phase is choosing your beginning castle. It is probably wisest to pick one of the castles in the middle or with the closest surrounding castles because this allows for quicker and more efficient expansion of your Kingdom. The next phase you will be allowed to place cannons within your Kingdoms walls. You will notice each cannon requires a decent amount of space within your walls meaning the larger your Kingdom the more firepower you will be able to sustain. Next is the combat phase! If you are playing single player there will be enemy ships shooting at you that you may sink using your cannons. In multiplayer your opponent controls a neighboring Kingdom that you must destroy. A tip to effectively shoot down enemy ships is to be conscious of the ships movement path. If the ship is moving, you will want to shoot slightly ahead of the ship to get a lead on it, so by the time your cann... Read the rest of this Review
