Battle Unit Zeoth
07-27-23 10:09 PM
A surprising enjoyable game
This game is another one of the gameboy cartridges that came with the gameboy back in the late 2000s. This one was a weird one for me as I didn’t even touch it until cartridges started disappearing from the bag. Though playing it as a kid had some fun, how does it do to these days with a different perspective? This is Battle Unit Zeoth for the Gameboy (emulation)

Story : 8

42 years have passed since the Earth was invaded by aliens. It’s at peace until the Grein, a metallic species, resurface from an underground base and ready to attack the earth again.

Basically, using a robot suit, you go out and shoot aliens and save the earth from an alien attack. It’s a neat idea for the gameboy and a nice distraction from the whole Mario land and Tetris games.

It’s an 8 out of 10. Story is unoriginal but it is fairly simple on a gameboy.

Graphics : 8

The graphics look pretty good for the game. I think it was released in 1990 or 1991, and how it has improve from graphics of Mario land or Alleyway (examples) you start to see the potential of the handheld with the power it can bring to hands. Bosses are rather large and as detailed as they can get in the game. Stages, albeit a little sparse in the background due to limitations, the activity is always active when shooting enemies or obstacles. Not much to say in this.

It’s an 8 out of 10. With the limitations of the handheld they did a pretty good job in 1990.

Sound : 9

The sound of the game is surprisingly good. Yes the gameboy beeps and audio is subpar but they made good use of the sound. The shooting does have a screeching noise, enemies make a weird exploding sound when destroyed. The music changes every stage and that’s pretty cool, and I know they loop but it takes like a minute or so, haven’t really paid attention since it wasn’t as noticeable. The boss music will always be the same though.

The sound is a 9 o... Read the rest of this Review

A good launch title for the Gameboy
A small review for today as I’m at work right now and using emulation to play this game. It’s one of those games I played when my younger sibling has gotten a gameboy and it can with a bunch of gameboy games like Rocky and Bullwinkle, Battle unite Zeoth, and game and watch gallery 3. Out of those games, there were two games that came with it, one was a pack in game back then and the other is a sequel. I mean granted it can be Tetris and Tetris 2 but that’s not what I’m talking about. This is for a review for the mascot himself in a handheld game, Super Mario Land for Gameboy (used by emulation).

Story : 7

From the manual, there is a place away from the  mushroom kingdom called Sarasaland, which an alien creature named Tatanga came from a dark cloud to conquer the land. Kidnapping the princess to marry her while controlling the citizens of this fine city, Mario heard of the events and traveled to Sarasaland to save the princess and restore peace or will he fail as the space creature marries Princess Daisy and take over the land?

It’s the same old Mario saves the Princess trope but instead of being Princess peach and Bowser it’s now about Princess Daisy and an alien from outer space. Weird but credit it due.

It’s a 7 out of 10. Same old story but with different characters. Doesn’t get old at this moment.

Graphics : 7

The graphics were okay for a Gameboy launch title and a pack in game. Nothing too spectacular as it’s just the beginning of the system’s life cycle. You can definitely tell that it is Mario and the enemy sprites aren’t bad. Level designs are not that awful either, developers tried their best to make it feel like Mario but in their own variation. You’ve got green, dark green, light green, soft green and a dark dark green for color palettes which aren’t bad. (Yes it’s a joke)

Graphics is a 7 out of 10. It’s a decent try for a launch title for the system. ... Read the rest of this Review
Capcom vs SNK 2

“Dream event of the 21st century”
This game I was exposed as a kid back in 2006. I saw it on the Xbox and was instantly hooked due to knowing what the characters were and seen it somewhere in tv before. I haven’t been able to play it until I’ve gotten a PS2 physical copy in 2014 but since it’s cracked, I can only play through emulation. This game is a sequel to the first one I’ve recently reviewed a while back and this one is more so the same but with new features. Is it worthy of a sequel or did it falter? This is Capcom vs Snk 2 : Mark of the Millennium 2001 for PlayStation 2 by use of emulation.

Story : 8

The game starts with another tournament hosted by both the Masters Foundation and the Garcia Financial Clique. With this fighters from the previous tournament re-enter once more with new fighters coming in from all over the world to challenge each other and win the coveted prize of cash and being named the best fighter in the world.

The series is basically the same as the last game before with evil hidden within the tournament, except with different bosses this time as the game focuses more on an expanded roster of fighters and such.

It’s an 8 out of 10. The game is still interesting but it’s reusing the same plot as last year’s game which dulls a bit.

Graphics : 8

The intro starts off pretty good to attract people to play the game with thunderstorms and volcanic eruptions and Ryu and Kyo in the area ready to fight.

Again, let’s draw the negatives. Character designs are lazy for half and good for the rest. Capcom again reusing assets for most of the characters while the more popular characters get a redesign to fit the game. Some don’t even look good at all and using the same model as the 90s (Morrigan) and they just don’t fit the game’s aesthetics. Snk are completely redrawn and look stunning. The character models are one of the best I’ve seen yet for an Snk game and it shows the quality that they d... Read the rest of this Review
Capcom vs. SNK

A first in the console. A crossover you’ve never thought.
This game is pretty recent on my game time, I think since 2020 I been playing this game. Another crossover which I enjoyed for a while and such. I didn’t even know it was a thing until I’ve played the neo geo pocket game and I am just saying, is this game any good for a console or should it just stay in the console? This is Capcom vs Snk : Millennium Match 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast (emulation).

Story : 8

The story is about a tournament, financed by the Masters Foundation and the Garcia Financial, where the greatest fighters in the world sign up for a chance of glory as two of the biggest franchises of the time come together to see who’s the strongest in the world. What they don’t know is the evil that’s hidden behind the scenes.

The intro of the game catches the viewers eyes with “Everybody rumored, no one believed” with the background audio repeating “Capcom vs Snk” and it was a crossover long awaited (the first being on the NeoGeo pocket if I recall).

Story is an 8 out of 10. A tournament bringing two franchises together is a great idea but the whole evil thing, still overused.

Graphics : 8

The intro presents outer space with the Milky Way and it starts traveling past planets and stars until its arrival to earth when the logo appears with 3D skyscrapers. It’s an eye popper and the planets and such look pretty good. Waiting for a bit does show the high scores and character models.

Character models are a mixed bag. The SNK models look pretty good and consistent to one another where they work well with the gameplay. Capcom characters… they’re a mixed bag. Players like Ryu and Ken have models similar to the snk side but when you go after some like Sakura, Zangief or Vega, they have a more Alpha 3 look to it and it doesn’t fit the whole aesthetic. I mean if they could make new models for M. Bison, Ken and such characters, why not all? The animation is pretty smooth and ... Read the rest of this Review
Twisted Metal III
07-25-23 10:51 PM
One of the worst in the series
(How many times will I say edgy?) This is the last game I’ve played for the series before getting my hands on the PS2 installment in the series. Not much to say about it other than it’s a quick fix back in the day (2009) when the fourth title broke and there was no way to play the game other than a demo version of the second game. Though was this game really as bad as people thought or were we too critical? This is Twisted Metal III for the PlayStation (through emulation).

Story : 6

The game sets you in the year 2008 I think? I’m assuming because the first level you hear Calypso stating “the great earthquake of 2007 months ago” so there’s that. Anyways basically the story is mostly about car destruction all around the world and the winner is granted a wish of any choice. It’s the same old trope that hasn’t changed much at all with the series. The only difference is really the location. Twisted metal had a warehouse, Twisted Metal II was in top of a tower. Twisted Metal III, in a blimp. Each character has a wish of their own they want fulfilled and they do have endings so there’s that.

It’s a 6 out of 10. Game is dull with the same plot as the previous titles but the game is still fun.

Graphics : 6

The graphics are atrocious for 1998. The CGI animation, one of the worst intros I’ve seen. I know they were going for an edgy animation with heavy metal music but the models look so stiff, the facial expressions look blank, the artwork… I’m not sure if it’s some cel shading or what but it’s just horrible to look at. Pffft even the characters themselves are just kind of terrible. I’ve seen better graphics from lower budget games and this is supposed to be one of the staples for Sony?

The stages are pretty lackluster and void of personality. Some are just an open area with one or two higher levels and the creativity just isn’t there. Some stages just feel too claustrophobic to man... Read the rest of this Review
Bust-A-Move 2: Arcade Edition

A good game of Puzzle Bobble
Story time : I’ve only ever played these style of games on the phone or online back in the days. Little fun puzzle game with some leisure time. I didn’t get a physical copy of this Taito classic until 2008 and haven’t been able to play a similar game until Vizzed from the N64 versions and Super Nintendo. Well anyways I thought it’ll be nice to make a review about this particular game that brought me to this Taito mascot. This is Bust-A-Move 2 : Arcade Edition for the Sony PlayStation. (Used on emulation)

Story : N/A ????

I don’t think there is a story behind this unlike its titles before, bubble bobble. The game does have cutscenes and the intro does begin with a 3D main character, Bub, and the a 2D Bub chasing after a purple squid looking creature stealing stars but again, I’m not sure there is an actual story to the game. Basically go through stages to capture the stars stolen from the sky. Uhhh

It’s N/A I guess since reading the manual doesn’t have a story either? Anyone knows let me know. I know it’s about retrieving stars after beating the game but why were they stolen?

Graphics : 9

The graphics are cute. You got the titular character Bubs, the green dinosaur, and his friend the blue one, as second player. You have a cast of characters that are well animated and mostly chibi style? I think that’s how you refer these?

The intro starts off with a 3D model of Bubs walking in a moonlit grassy area that looks decent for CGI back in the days. Waiting for the intro does show a bit of gameplay and the bubbles look well designed, with each having a different pattern and color to differentiate. Then you get treated with high scores with bubbles jumping all around the screen in the background and that’s pretty neat. though one more and it’s the most perplexing, you get a little dance with the two dinosaurs with a crayon-esque background and it shows a few of the characters that you face in s... Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes
07-23-23 04:50 PM
Let me take you on a ride!
Been exposed to Marvel vs Capcom for quite a while since my first taste in an emulation from a PSP. It was Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter and Marvel vs Capcom : Clash of Superheroes that brought to me this vs. series which is wild because out of all the years until 2010s I didn’t know this existed, even though I played Street Fighter games and Marvel Superheroes. This one though, I’ve seen it on the Xbox Marketplace when it was available before the removal (licensing). Since then I’ve bought the physical disc for the Dreamcast 8 years ago for $40 and now, through emulation because of how expensive the game is now… I’ll make a review about this classic of a game. This is Marvel vs Capcom 2 : New Age of Heroes for Dreamcast.

Story : 7

The story of a game is about a pirate named Ruby Heart who stumbled a great evil named Abyss. She traveled on her ship to warn the Marvel heroes and villains plus the Capcom universe of a great evil that is approaching. Putting aside their differences, they team up once again since the battle of Onslaught, as they travel through the lands to face Abyss and trap him back in a sphere where he came out of.

It’s a similar “Heroes and villains vs a great evil” they have been pulling off the last few iterations but the catch is that there’s no individual stories of these characters. No matter who you choose it’ll always be the same ending (not spoiling). The story presents itself an original boss and that’s quite uncommon from this series itself.

It’s a 7 out of 10. Overused but not so dulled out. Lack of individual stories makes it lackluster compared to previous games.

Graphics : 9

The game introduces some 3D aspects into the fray in use of the backgrounds. The stages look pretty great on Dreamcast hardware, almost near perfection to the arcade port if not already. Simply one of the best Capcom has done yet with the series. Stages are more so static ... Read the rest of this Review
Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue
07-22-23 05:19 PM
You got a friend in me (PSX better)
This game was an unexpected favorite of mine growing up. I was sad that Street Fighter Alpha 2 was replaced by this game at first due to… well street fighter being all about fighting so a kid friendly game has to be brought into the household. At first I was upset about not able to play Street Fighter but looking back now, school yards during recess I do be acting like I was Ken or something so…. Yeah… anyways this game eventually grew on me and I haven’t beaten it until recently after all these years… even though on a different console. This is Toy Story 2 : Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue for Sega Dreamcast (and comparisons to the PlayStation, since I’ve played both)

Story : 9

The game follows the movie storyline with some “fodder” stages. Woody came out to a yard sale for a rescue attempt which he was left stranded in the area. A toy collector named Al saw Woody and stole him from the yard sale when he was told Woody isn’t for sale. Buzz Lightyear tried to chase after the vehicle but he was unsuccessful, holding a feather in his hand as he watches the vehicle drive away with Woody. It’s up to Buzz Lightyear to travel through the neighborhood and eventually the city to locate Woody before it’s too late, as Woody realizes he is a rare collectible from an old show back in the days.

Most of the charm is there and it keeps the storyline in order with some gameplay that deviates from the story itself. Well the story stays the same, the journey ingame is different to say more clearly.

Overall it’s an 9 out of 10. Can’t say no to a classic storyline and movie.

Graphics : 6

I feel like this is the weakest point of the game. It’s basically a port of the PlayStation version with higher resolution. The draw distance is a lot better and models are just an upscale. The FMVs look very good with what the CD’s had to offer back in the 90s, probably the best out of the Dreamcast vs PlayStation. ... Read the rest of this Review
Marvel Vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes (Euro 980123)
07-21-23 06:20 PM
The best one yet from the series.
This game is next on a franchise and is considered a favorite of mine. I was first exposed to it back in 2012 with the PSP which somehow had emulations on it. After playing Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter I was trying different games in the system (Street Fighter Alpha 3 and DarkStalkers) and been enjoying these games. This one though, I played it quite a lot and always used two of the same characters during gameplay. Even now while playing for a review I still chose the same characters and remembered how well the moves sets are. Anyways here is the review. Marvel vs. Capcom : Clash of Super Heroes for Arcade! The next installment of the vs. series.

Story : 7

An evil entity has been creating chaos around the world and destroying everything in its path. This being, Onslaught, is considered one of the most powerful and dangerous being in the earth and it’s up to the heroes from Marvel and the fighters of Capcom to team up once more and defeat this being. Will they be able to defeat onslaught or let the world be destroyed?

The story is somewhat overused. The plot of the world destruction and up to heroes and villains to save the world is overdone by Capcom at this time but it’s still more enjoyable nonetheless, though losing its appeal.

It’s a 7 out of 10. Overused story, plot and such but shouldn’t deter from the gameplay.

Graphics : 8

The graphic’s department…. Most models are the same sprites from other games and it’s pretty lazy when some don’t match the quality of others (Morrigan is a huge example of looking odd). Other characters have a new sprite designed just for this game and they look well done when comparing to their original design (Strider and Jin). The character select pics are also pretty good, the artwork in general resembles to the sprites, the games that a few originate (Marvel characters and Street fighter, even morrigan), or the shows (Hulk, Wolverine).

Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter (Euro 970625)

Lazy upgrade but a great game still
Story time. This was one of two games I’ve encountered on a PSP back in 2012. It was a modded PSP with some games that were emulation. In the emulation I’ve seen one that said “CPSII” and thought it was like an 80s console emulator. I was so wrong when I clicked and saw what games they had to offer in that emulator. Dark Stalkers 3, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Marvel vs Capcom : clash of super heroes and Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter. This review I’m going to go with the next fighting game of the series that I unintentionally started. This is Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter for Arcade (used on Emulation)

Story: 6

Apocalypse returns to destroy mankind and mutant kind alike and it’s up to the Street Fighter and Marvel Heroes (or villains) to team up and face the evil. Would you able to save the earth or let it be ruined?

The story is basically a rehash of the previous title (X-men vs Street Fighter) and it’s a bit lazy for me. They could’ve done a better job instead of creating a similar situation that they with Street Fighter II updates (Just updating the roster or mechanics but not the story)

It’s a 6 out of 10. Same story as the previous game. Lazy work.

Graphics : 7

The game consists of beautiful character models and stages but the issue… they’re mostly reused again from previous titles. Yeah some characters have new animations and moves which is a welcoming addition but wanted at least a visual upgrade from last year’s game to now. The animation is smooth as ever and the stages, some have been reworked from the previous title. The stages have more personality and feel more crowded than the last title and some cameos in the background are present.

The attract mode shows off the characters and new characters showing up and demos of characters fighting each other. Issue is the flashing lights and lightning make it hard for people who are photosensitive.

X-Men Vs. Street Fighter (Euro 961004)
07-20-23 02:48 PM
The beginning of the Vs. Series
This really was a game I didn’t play until 2019. I thought about skipping it but since I’ve unintentionally started a series of reviews of this franchise I might as well continue the trend. This game is set after Street Fighter Alpha 2, and it’s a first of such.

This game officially started the franchise with the wildest crossover anyone has seen yet in a fighting game. This is one where both properties merge to fight one another or with another. This is X-men vs Street Fighter for arcade, played on MAME.

Story : 8

Mutants and Street Fighter characters have been kidnapped and disappearing from around the world. Some assumed that it was the work of Magneto, mutant that is a master of magnetism, while other believed it was M. Bison, leader of Shadoloo. With this X-men and Street Fighter teamed up with one another to find the reasoning of the recent disappearances. Even though they’re working on the same goal, cracks and issues are present in the teams and fights break out. Would they be able to solve the mystery or dispense all their energy among each other?

With this the story is more interesting than in previous titles. The presence of street fighter and x-men in the same game though, people probably got their minds blown back in the days.

Story is an 8 out of 10. The story is pretty good and how it brought both franchises together is a gift form the heavens.

Graphics : 9

The graphics of the game is beautiful. Street Fighter hold their Alpha 2 models (reason why I had to do a review of Alpha 2 first before playing this to keep the franchise in order), respectively. The X-men characters hood all their resemblance to their respective cartoon. Even though they both have a different design (X-men more cartoon while Street Fighter has a more anime feel to it) they both blend well during gameplay.

The attract mode is very good. “The Wildest Crossover” they stated and it’s not... Read the rest of this Review
Sesame Street: Elmo\'s Letter Adventure
07-19-23 10:50 PM
I didn’t expect to make a review
Story time. This is recent as of 2023, July 17 to be exact. I was considering whether or not to either play this game or Manhunt (An M rated game) but after some thinking I thought I would be doing justice to play this game in particular. Why? No reason, stray away from the mindless playtime I’ve spent with violent games and Tetris and actually try to learn about some important aspects of life. By that I mean letters, and such I bring to you this review, on emulation, Sesame Street : Elmo’s Letter Adventure.

Story : 0 (N/A)????

The game rarely has a story and it’s just collecting specific letters that a character wants. I mean it’s Sesame Street, you want a rock n roll story then I am not sure what to tell you.

Story is N/A at the moment.

Graphics : 9

The graphics look pretty good actually for a kid’s game. They actually look like the characters from the game, the backgrounds look clean, the animations doesn’t look bad and the area does look like Sesame Street at least. Animation is pretty good but the movement feels a bit too heavy, a little tanky.

The intro of the game is pretty good. Little it of a fuzzy look but it looks pretty good. The “menu” of Sesame Street looks like pretty good with some 2D objects like the balloons and houses.

The characters, though limited, do look like the characters from their respective properties. Elmo looks like an anorexic red slender man baby whose head looks like a weird looking lollipop. Cookie Monster looks like Cookie Monster, Grover looks like himself but malnourished, Big Bird looks more or so like himself and Ernie, his hair looks like there’s some white pixelated areas that are appeared to be missing colored black. Overall, the characters do resemble their puppet counterparts from the tv show.

The stages are well done to be honest, from being up in space to collecting items from a farm. Pffft even going underwater they did a... Read the rest of this Review
Tetris

The rating doesn’t give it justice to the game
Story time. I wasn’t introduced to the original gameboy until later on in my life, around 2010. Included with the gameboy were a bunch of games ranging from Rocky and Bullwinkle, Super Mario land 1 and 2, Alleyway to name a few. There was this one game that everyone would instantly know and love. The basic premise, easy to learn mechanics and style of play makes it a people pleaser for hours on end. I’ve been exposed to it multiple times before but this was the one eluded me for so long. This is Tetris for the original Gameboy.

Story : N/A

There is no story in the game. It was just a mindless game of pixelated blocks going down the floor. I mean you can make up a story or be imaginative but overall….

Story is blank.

Graphics : 8

Hear me out, when you go to the main menu you see the background and that’s pretty cool for a pack in title for the gameboy. The blocks are pretty good for the gameboy launch and rotation is smooth. The speed of the game is where it shows. The blocks go down quite quickly down to the floor but you do have a faint shadow effect, probably due to how old my gameboy is… I mean I tried fixing the contrast but it’s no biggie. What makes the game a lot more interesting is the variety of colors. You get shaded green, dotted green, green, dark green with a white green outline around the square, a green with another green that looks sunken in with the L shape, and more with the color green! Green everywhere I tell you!

It’s an 8. Pleasing to the eyes and not much for an early title.

Depth: 3

The game is just filling a horizontal line with parts of the tetrominoes. You have the option of two games and up to 9 levels to choose. Each level determines the speed of the falling tetrominoes and such. There’s no ending or anything it’s just a good pasttime to waste the day over and such. The more you remove lines simultaneously (Up to four) the higher your scor... Read the rest of this Review
Street Fighter Alpha 2

Not a bad port, but the second weakest port.
Story. This game was originally bought with the PlayStation back in 2000 when I was a kid. Looking at the system I was amazed at how good the graphics were and experiencing games that weren’t from the Super Nintendo or Sega Saturn. This game in particular was a good favorite of mine and introduced me to the fighting series itself (the franchise). I actually remember talking about it with some school friends at that time (1st grade) and how good the games were, albeit I wasn’t exposed to every game up to that moment, just this one. Unfortunately it was swapped out with another game, a kid friendly one but it was actually pretty good too (that’s for another review).

For this review I’ll be writing about Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the PlayStation. That’s right the console itself, not the arcade. Though albeit have to mix in with emulation because the disc I currently own won’t load up specific stages or characters. I don’t know. Anyways let’s jump to the review.

Story : 7

The game is set after the events of Street Fighter Alpha and still between Street Fighter 1 and Street Fighter II. Each character has a background story of its own as there is no direct story to the game, with the exception of Charlie (Nash in Japan) always being killed off in this series of alpha games.

The story is a 7 out of 10. No direct story but each character has a path you can follow and see at the end.

Graphics : 7

The graphics are a minor upgrade to the previous game. Though some animations look a bit incomplete like missing animations, it does the job well for a port due to the limitations of the a PlayStation. The backgrounds are lively as ever thanks to the quality of Capcom. From a lovely crowd, to a group of bicyclists and even a moving scaffold, it gives a sense of atmosphere that gives flair to the stage.

Character models of the game seem a bit smaller than the arcade version and the gameplay... Read the rest of this Review

One of the best in the series
Warning : This game is Rated M for mature so some material is not suitable for an audience who are under 17 or easily offended by the contents of this game. Some parts of the game do display religion from time, even a character who has beliefs on religion (crucifixion for example) and demons. Play at your own risk if not easily offended. Disregard the review if this game isn’t meant for you.

This is more a recent game I’ve played during quarantine. Being a fan of the series since the fourth installment (even though it’s pretty bad now that I understand the graphics and gameplay more) I didn’t get a taste of another title until it’s second game of the franchise. The sequel some might say. Sure it was in a demo disc but I played it a lot with all the cars available to play with that one stage and had fun. The third one was next and it was really lackluster, almost as bad as the fourth. Didn’t get a taste of the series again until 2020 when I bought the second, fourth and a PlayStation 2 version which I wanted to play for so long. This review is about the PS2 installment of the series and was it a success jumping to a new era or did it meant to stay as just a PlayStation one era series? Twisted Metal Black for the PlayStation 2

Story : 9

There’s not much of a story here but individuals that you choose to combat. What makes it kind of cool and interesting is that these characters, most are from a mental institution. They range from chronic schizophrenia, to suicidal tendencies with depression with episodic depression, even cannibalism. Heck some are even homicidal tendencies with unspecified psychotic disorder. This game leads a dark turn to a more grounded cartoon style of previous twisted metal games. Going through the manual you notice that it’s more so a journal from a man in the game known as “no face” but doesn’t specify if he’s the main star of the game as Sweet Tooth seems to be more of the poster child. Read the rest of this Review
Gauntlet Legends

Lackluster port of a great series
Story time. This is a game that I haven’t beaten when I first got it as a kid, I mean eventually I got around to it’s “sequel” or rather, an expansion in my eyes, and made a review of it a year or so back. This one is basically a precursor of the game and well, each console had different mechanics and gameplay elements that made it unique to play. Example, N64 is closest to the arcade version you would see in a home port, Dreamcast version is more so an incomplete version of the sequel but has a more arcade feel to it. This version I’m playing, is it better than the two, or worse? Who knows but let’s make a review out of it. This is Gauntlet Legends for the PlayStation.

Story : 8

An evil wizard Garm has summoned a benevolent demon named Skorn to control its powers but he was too powerful. With his power he took down the wizard and killed him, and scattered all 13 rune stones to different realms so he won’t be imprisoned again. Another wizard, Sumner, summoned four heroes to defeat the evil Skorne and bring peace back to the realms.

The story has a medieval fantasy setting to it. Going to different realms to face monsters and creatures it’s up to you to defeat the evil demon named Skorne. A good story and it gives the game a bit of an adventurous feel to it.

It’s an 8 out of 10.

Graphics : 6

The graphics aren’t bad, but they don’t showcase the power of the PlayStation in the 2000. Very underpowered graphics and the characters are heavily pixelated.

The FMV intro is pretty good and probably as much power the PlayStation could handle to play the video, after that you get the start intro and it’s very pixelated. The main menu is so lackluster compared to the other ports of the game, like the PlayStation couldn’t handle anymore ram or something after that intro.

Each character just looks so ugly and the enemies look so jagged. The levels are heavily down sized an... Read the rest of this Review

A rushed broken game for the franchise
Story time. This game was something of a gem between me and my younger brother. He played it a lot more than me since he was into cars and I’m into more fighting games so this title had a mix of both for us. Whether playing cooperatively or against each other, we played it for a good while until its wear and tear started to diminish the use of the disc. Eventually it failed and we gotten somewhat replacements, by that I mean we got the second installment in a demo disc and third installment of the full game. It helped a bit but it wasn’t the same. Fast forward to 2020 when the pandemic started and I thought I’d buy the disc for old times sake and a PlayStation and played it again. Was it as good as I remember or nostalgia again played a factor. Anyways this game isn’t the first installment of the soon to be tv series but rather the fourth one. This is twisted metal 4 for the PlayStation.

Story : 7

Since 989 studios took over the game (back in twisted metal III), things just seem convoluted and confusing. Some say it’s not canon, though I don’t know myself but here’s the story.

Vehicles have come across a town and a young sweet tooth experienced the destruction and mayhem of the weaponized automobiles attacking one another. Wanting to be a part of it, he ran away and became a contestant for the tournament or “carnival” (no kidding that’s what he said, a carnival came into town), and destroyed people and their vehicles. The host of the tournament, Calypso, steals the souls of the dead contestants and in turn makes him stronger with some powers I have never seen except making wishes. Sweet tooth won a tournament and wished to be the star of the twisted metal tournament. His wish became true and eventually developed a plan to overthrow the host of the tournament and become the twisted metal organizer.

With this, you can get a more fleshed out story from the CGI intro and get to see how it plays out. With that... Read the rest of this Review

Sega nailed it for Saturn once more
Story time, I guess. This is the fourth and final disc of the Sega Saturn games I owned back then (well had five but Sonic 3D Blast did not work). This one was probably played the most out of every game we owned for the console just because of my admiration for fighting games, which was introduced by Mortal Kombat on Arcade in a small grocery store. We played this game so much and always found ways to keep it going until our Saturn was ruined and left by the apartments when we moved to a new state. Today, through emulation and by a Xbox 360 version which upscales the graphics of the original arcade, game can be enjoyed by gamers and nostalgic fans.

It’s a shame I never played the first one but maybe another time if I could be able to. Anyways, for this game though, I’ll be playing with a bit of the Saturn disc I still own and emulation to get the most thorough review I can make out of it. This is Virtua Fighter 2 for Sega Saturn

Story : 9

The story from the manual states, the final tournament, which was Virtua Fighter 1, Lau Chan won and became champion. Fighters gained rivalries and friendships throughout the tournament and will want to improve themselves so they won’t be defeated again. As they go take on different paths, a year has passed before they get another invitation for a new tournament on the horizon. Some are suspicious of the event, while others want to rekindle the rivalries of last year’s tournament. Few have agendas on their own (read the manual for a full on scope) and others want to win and become the best fighter in the world.

The story is pretty interesting as reading in the manual it states each player’s motivation for entering the tournament in the story segment page. To me that’s pretty uncommon since most info are usually in player bios and not in the story segment itself. To me it gives off a more realistic feel to the story and how connected each fighter is to the tournament and last year... Read the rest of this Review
Altered Beast

Power up.
This game was introduced to me on the plug and play console which had Kid Chameleon, Flicky, Golden axe with sonic and mean bean machine. This was a pretty good game for its time and was a pack in title for the original Sega Genesis. It was considered a great port of the classic arcade game but since I never owned a physical release and only played it on compilation genesis games for Xbox… I have to resort to emulation. This is Altered Beast for the Sega Genesis (On emulation).

Story: 7

Awakened by the God of gods, Zues, you “rise from your grave” to battle hoards of monsters to challenge the god of the underworld, Neff. It’s up to you to conquer Neff and save Athena, the daughter of Zeus, and bring her back to her father. Are you up to the challenge?

The game is more so a beat ‘‘em up style game with some Greek mythology. The usual “save the damsel in distress” trope but back then it was pretty original with the use of gods.

It’s a 7 out of 10

Depth and addictive : 6

Bundling them together since they’re both mostly going to be the same talk. The game doesn’t offer any depth at all other than the story and cutscenes. With that you can change the settings with how much health you want and difficulty but other than that it’s just like the arcade. The game is like a beat ‘em up with some sort of platform jumping as you go forward to the stage and collect three orbs from grey wolves when defeated (usually by a kick or punch) and it grants you with more power until you transform into an animal of that stage. Whether it be a werewolf, tiger or a bear, even a dragon, it gives a bit of diversity as that’s the only way to have a battle with the stage boss. The level designs are varied and gives a good sense of transition with the outdoor graves to caves and even a mausoleum looking stage. The game has its cheap thrills but it’s not much to play regularly. Probably once a year or so. Read the rest of this Review
Virtua Cop

Sega nailed it with this port
Story time I guess? This was another game that was part of my Sega Saturn memories growing up. It was popular with me and the siblings but we never played it as much as Virtua Fighter 2, Sonic R and Daytona USA usually be more popular than this game. I mean it’s fun but I think it was a tad difficult to play, I don’t really remember much. Either way, had to resort to emulation since the disc was cracked and unplayable so, here’s Virtua Cop for the Sega Saturn… on emulation.

Story : 8

From the manual, but shortened. The story of an underground arms business ran by a mysterious, powerful crime syndicate. As two of the finest cops (deployed by the special task force to shut down the arms distribution, you go around the city (Virtua City, original) fighting thugs and and armed smugglers to seize the weapons and disband the syndicate.

The story itself feels like it’s overused but when this game came out I’m not sure if it is an original plot or isn’t as used as much. Pretty decent story to help you understand what the game is about.

Overall it’s a 8 out of 10. Doesn’t feel tacky for its time.

Graphics : 8

For a Sega Saturn game, the graphics look great. It’s a really good port of the game with some downgrades of course. The resolution is less refined and letters are a bit blurry when compared to the arcade. The start up “attract mode” stays faithful to the arcade with the intro. The intro uses the ingame engine and the polygons aren’t bad to look at, not at all. Some pixelization and some parts of the models pop through like any older 3D titles (like skin popping over the white shirt or arm going through an object. That kind of pop).

When staying on the screen longer it’ll show a fmv which is pretty neat, low resolution but they tried.

The stages are decent size and very well made for the Saturn. Some objects are also breakable which is nice from a red barrel t... Read the rest of this Review
Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors\' Dreams (Euro 950727)

Warriors Dream
Story time. Being introduced to street fighter alpha 2 in my younger years as a child brought fond memories and brought me to the Street Fighter franchise. Since then I’ve played, in order, Street Fighter alpha 2, street fighter II collection for PlayStation, street fighter alpha III on arcade, Street Fighter IV on Steam, the anniversary collection for the Xbox One, and Street Fighter 6. Out of all the games, I’ll make a review of Street Fighter Alpha, which was on the Anniversary collection, but since there’s some issues with controls and minor changes, I’ll go ahead and be on Mame and get the full arcade experience, close to it at least.

This is Street Fighter Alpha for Arcade

Story : 6

The events of the game is set after the first Street Fighter game back in 1987 and before the events of Street Fighter II in 1991. There’s no plot or focus on the game as each fighter has their own story and events to unfold throughout the arcade mode. Not much to say.

It’s a 6 out of 10

Sound : 8

The sound of the music is pretty good. Has a little muffled feel but mostly unnoticeable. The sound effects is great and the soundtrack has been redone for a few characters that return from the original Street Fighter II cast. The attract mode has that OOMPH that’ll attract players to see what the game is about. Every character has their own voice and grunts (some fighting games in general reuse same voices for different characters just pointing out). Honestly there’s nothing wrong with the sound, nothing too memorable but yeah.

A good 8 out of 10

Graphics : 9

The graphics resemble more or a anime style feel. It’s a huge takeaway from the more realistic visuals Street Fighter II offered and it’s a nice change. Character models look younger too since it’s before the Street Fighter II series. The stages look beautiful and are lovely as usual which is a given from Capcom. Animat... Mortal Kombat (rev 5.0 T-Unit 03-19-93)

Finish him!
Story time. It was 1998-99, Pokémon was fresh in video games and Pokémon fever was at an the rise at this point. I used to go to a store and get myself those lollipops that had Pokémon stickers in them to collect and I remember getting a bulbasaur and beedrill, nidoking also I think. At the corner of my eye I saw a game that was like nothing I’ve ever seen. This was my first exposure to video games if I could recall, before a console was introduced in the household. This game was not something I’ve seen in my life and I went up to it pretending that I was playing it. Little did I know this game was 3 or 4 titles in and it’s popular among the crowd, even controversial. Eventually I was exposed to it again around near 1999 early 2000s with its sequel on the Super Nintendo. Another few years, 2004, I played the original on the Super Nintendo and Trilogy on the PlayStation. I didn’t play the actual arcade version until the Xbox 360 release. Though we’re not going into that. I had to use emulation to play this game for this review so. This is Mortal Kombat for Arcade (yes this was my exposure to video games)

Story: 8

500 years undefeated, Goro seizes control of the tournament under the command of the sorcerer Shang Tsung. One more win and Earthrealm will be under attack by the Outworld. Earthrealm is on the verge of doom but seven fighters enter the tournament with their own purpose and agendas. Will Earthrealm be able to defeat Goro and ruin Shang Tsung’s plans or will he be able to let Outworld take over Earthrealm?

The story is neat, a bunch of random people entering a tournament knowing the fate of the world is in the hands of these fighters. A sorcerer ruling the tournament and having a henchman to defeat the opponents is done before.

Decent story though. 8 out of 10

Graphics: 7

The graphics look great at that time. Digitized sprites was all the rage with stiff animations and tanky movement. ... Read the rest of this Review
Hot Wheels Turbo Racing

Hot Wheels, TURBO RACING!
Another game I used to play as a kid. This one was one of my favorites growing up and I used to play it with my younger brother (he was a bigger fan than me). To see toy cars in a video game world and racing through tracks reminiscent of the ones you find in stores, you know a lot of time and competition between us two. Getting older now, I tried the different port of this game on the N64 here in this site (since PlayStation wasn’t available in the site yet). It looked better but lacked content so I’ll stick with the one I grew up with. This is Hot Wheels : Turbo Racing for the PlayStation!

Story: N/A

There’s no story to the game really. It’s just a pick up and play with any vehicles on the roster based on the hot wheels line. Not much to say on this end other than to race for first.

Rating is a good N/A out of 10.

Depth : 8

You start off with a base of 20 vehicles to choose from. Then on out after completing the game (more on later) you choose one of forty cars, well forty one if you know the code for the secret car, and race against opponents through many of the death defying, trick slinging, speed demon tracks. Hidden vehicles are found throughout the tracks and you can collect them all (if you know where to find them) to increase your collection. Each track is wildly different from the others and it gives good variety of replay ability.

The game also comes with some neat game modes, Other than the usual exhibition mode, where you can choose a track and vehicle and race, game also comes with a trick attack mode (airtime challenge) and a hot wheels cup mode. With trick attack mode your goal is to have the highest points possible before time runs out, once you hit the finish line. In multiplayer there isn’t a time limit and it’s just whoever has the highest score.

Hot wheels cup comes with three leagues, the “Hot wheels Cup”, the “Secret Car Cup” and the “Twinmill” cup ... Read the rest of this Review
Marvel Super Heroes

The expansion of Marvel Fighting games before MvC
Story time. This was the first Marvel fighting game I experienced in my life. I think it was 2000 or 2001 when I was introduced to this game. At that time I was in awe, I loved fighting as different characters and helped me recognize to the main heroes of that time which most are relevant to this day. What I didn’t know was that this wasn’t the best game it had to offer and other ports were superior. Now older and able to play the different ports I can see what they meant. This review is on the console version though, Marvel Super Heroes for the PlayStation (Disc and Emulation) . The second Marvel mainline game before the rise of the Marvel vs Capcom series

Story: 8

The story is based around the infinity gauntlet and the gems. Loosely based on the comics, heroes and villains alike are trying to grab all the gems and gauntlet while foiling Thanos from his plans to succeed. His plans are to use the gems and take over the universe and it’s up for the heroes or villains to fight their way against each other to have a chance face thanos and his tremendous power.

The story itself is pretty good, each character have their own reasons and deeds to beat thanos and either use the powers of the gauntlet for their actions or save the world from the destructive force of the Thanos and his abilities when honing the gauntlet.

The story is a good 8 out of 10.

Depth : 8

Starting differently than usual, reasons why later. The game is chaotic in a good way. A One versus One fighting game, you fight against an opponent, lowering their health bar until their health is depleted or time is up. When time is up, whoever has more health at the end is the winner. Pretty straightforward but what makes this game have a bit of content is the characters and gimmicks. Choosing one of ten fighters, few returning characters from X-men Children of the atom (Wolverine, Psylocke, and previous bosses Juggernaut and Magneto) they are wel... Read the rest of this Review
Flicky

Budget game at best
Another game I played through the plug n play, Flicky. It was mixed in with Golden Axe, Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon, and Dr Robotnik Mean Bean Machine. I used to play this game quite a bit with Mean Bean Machine and it was really fun. Does it still hold up these days or is it just another nostalgic take that my mind is playing?

Story: 6

There’s not much of a story. You’re a Flicky trying to rescue the chicks from hungry cats called “Tiger” while avoiding the felines and Iggy the iguana that come after you. You lead the birds into safety of an “Exit” door and prevent them from falling to the prey. The story isn’t much but it’s at least a simple one to take.

A 6 out of 10.

Graphics : 7

The game was made during the genesis rise and it was pretty basic. The cats and birds look like… well cats and birds in a simple 16-bit console. I’m not sure what they were thinking since the game is seven years old by this time. The arcade version still looks a bit better than the port that came out for the Genesis. The backgrounds look a bit worse than the original, I don’t even know how?  Overall, it’s still a good looking game but it’s lacking behind big during that time.

A 7 out of 10

Sound: 7

The soundtrack is very limited. I’m not even sure what they did but it’s more high pitched and screechy than the arcade. It’s not much of a Sega sound it’s just high frequency and screeching chirping sounds that’ll hurt the ears if wearing headphones. The music is cute and cheerful but you’ll get sick of it eventually.

Another 7 out of 10

Depth: 3

The game offers no content other than the original arcade mode and bonus stages. Collecting chicks either one at a time or collectively for bonus points is all I can see that matters if going for a high score. The quicker you get them to safety, the higher the bonus score. The bo... Read the rest of this Review
