Don't Starve: Console Edition Review by: zanderlex - 8.5/10

Starvation
I was first introduced to this game a few months ago when I watched Markiplier do a video on it. I
love Mark’s videos and pretty much every single game that he plays, I go out and get because the way
he does his videos makes me fall in love with that game. However, this was not one of those games, I
watched the video and did like it, but I thought the game was too slow paced and I didn’t really like the
way that it looked so I dismissed it and never thought about it again.

Fast forward a couple of months, and mark does another video, this time, it was of a mod that was
based on himself. After watching this video, I said what the heck, I might as well try it out. I was
planning on buying the game for my laptop, but then I learned that there was a version of it for PS4 so I
ended up buying if for the system.

Unlike most games, I did not have much excitement for the game, I just wanted to test it out to see what
it was like, and the game was pretty enjoyable. It wasn’t a top notch game like some of the others that
I have played this year, but it was still a fun game to play and it has to be one of the best made games
that I have seen in a while. It was also cheap compared to other PS4 titles, I bought it for just $15 and
from what I have seen the 3 times I have played the game, that’s a very fair price for the amount of
content that is given.

The thing about the game that gave me the most interest was how the in game functions are similar
to Minecraft, and that’s a game that I really like. Before even palying, after just watching the videos, I
began to view the game as a crossover between Minecraft and some random RPG.

GRAPHICS 9/10

The graphics are not really what you would expect to see from a PS4 game. They are very simple and not
quite realistic. It’s colorful and beautiful, but not at the same level as most PS4 games. If that was just
what I would base the grade on, then the grade would be very low, but I’m not, there’s way more to this
games graphics than just that.

I really like the style of the drawings, I think each scene is funny yet brilliant and I love that. If I had
to compare the drawing style to another piece of media, I would have to say it looks a bit like that
of Gravity Falls, a show that has very unique drawings. Because of this, I feel that the graphics are
spectacular, even if thay aren’t like other games. The graphics are unique and beautiful and because of
this, I give this aspect a grade of 9 out of 10.

MUSIC 9/10

Whoever made the music for this game had done a terrific job because the music creates the perfect
atmosphere for the game. I don’t even care for the random sounds that appear when a creature pops
up or something else happens because the music is all that you need to be immersed in the game well
enough. Some of the music is very well made and makes the game sound even creepier, darker, and
more mysterious than it already is.

There are some songs in the games soundtrack that sound like epic masterpieces that could be in
mega film or TV series like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. Some of my favorite songs from the
soundtrack include Cave of Danger and Epic Ruins. My favorite is Cave of Danger and when I was looking
the song up, quite a few people said it was similar to the music from Skyrim. Overall, I love the music,
it’s both dark and energetic. There are 23 different songs throughout the game and some of them are
really good. My overall grade for sound is going to be another 9 out of 10.

STORY 8/10

The story is very similar to Minecraft and features a randomly generated 3D world for you to explore
and survive in. There isn’t much to the story itself and it isn’t really unique. Like Minecraft, and other
similar games, the main objective is simply to stay alive as long as you can. There isn’t much more to the
story aside for a few bits and pieces given in trailer and a few parts throughout the game. Even though
it’s small, there’s still a lot to the story and for this, I give the story an 8 out of 10.

ADDICTIVNESS 9/10

Again, like Minecraft, you can pretty much do whatever you like, and as many times as you like. Just the
fact that the world is randomly generated each time you play means that you will have a pretty different
experience each and every time. One time, you may start near areas with tons of rescourses that you
need while other times you will start in much harder areas which make each starting point a different
adventure in its own and will cause each time you play to be different. Because of these small features,
this becomes a game in which you would want to play over and over as many times as you can and for
this, I give the addictiveness portion a grade of 9 out of 10.

DEPTH 9/10

Again, this all goes back to it’s similarity to Minecraft and the fact that the game is Randommly
generated. The world is huge and there is simply so much for you to find and do. The game is very in
depth, you can probably play the game over and over again for hours each time and still end up missing
a few things because there’s so much to explore. As for the depth of the game, I am going to give it
another 9 out of 10.

DIFFICULTY 5

The game is a simple point and click game and is fairly easy if you know what to do and are patient. If
you are not patient, you might find yourself screaming at the screen every once in a while and giving up
even though there’s always a way to succeed in this game. As long as you don’t give up, you learnt he
controls as best as you can, and you find a pace that is comfortable for you, then the game is going to be
quite easy. Overall for difficulty, I am going to give this game a 5.

OVERALL 8.5/10

Like I said, this is not one of the best games that I have played this year, but it’s a bit better than I had
expected it to be and was quite enjoyable. I would not suggest getting this game unless you are already
a fan of similar games or if you watched a few videos and like what you saw. Overall, I am going to
recommend the game because it’s fun and challenging and my overall grade for the game is going to be
an 9.5
