Marvel: Ultimate Alliance Review by: Zlinqx - 8.1/10

A fun beat em up with Marvel characters! #deadpoolftw
So this game was one of my favorite games from my childhood. I remember my brother having this game for the ps2 and I loved to play it whenever I was at his place. Skip forward a few years and I got an Xbox 360 and he gave me the Xbox 360 version along with a few other games.

So I decided to re visit it and how does it hold up? Well...

Firstly this game is a beat em up with RPG elements. The game mainly consists of choosing your team of 4 superheroes (which you can alter when playing through the game and when you unlock new characters) then play through different levels, defating several smaller bosses as well as one larger boss at the end of each world. As you play through the game you will level up your characters gaining points you can spend to gain new skills or upgrade current ones.

Graphics: 7

The graphics are not the best on the system however I don't think that's something it should be blamed for as it was released in 2006 when current gen (xbox 360, PlayStation 3, wii) was still considered next gen. The game has still aged fairly well though considering the time it was released at and the environments generally look great and are also very varied since it takes you through universes of different marvel characters. The animations for the playable characters are also great with a nice variety of different skills for each character and they also stay pretty faithful to the characters themselves. However at some points, particularly in some of the cutscenes it looks like the scenes were ripped straight from the ps2/xbox versions of the game which you will obviously notice and makes me have to lower the rating.

Sound: 8

There's nothing that I found that bad about this game sound wise. The sound effects are usually pretty good, the voice acting is fairly spot on and the soundtracks are great usually having a pretty dramatic and epic feel to them. And while not the best I've heard they usually fit fairly well. There are some that stand out a bit (Murderworld soundtrack anyone). With that said sometimes I get a slight repetitive feel which might partly be due to soundtracks sometimes feeling a tad too similar.

Addictiveness: 8

It's simply fun action beat em up gameplay with some added features to make it even better. Though the larger boss battles for the most part consist of minigames which while often fun, it can also get repetitive after a while. There are also a lot of puzzles which are usually overly simplified and easy to the point where I for the most part don't see too much of a reason to include them. Outside of this however you're still going to be spending most of your time beating up enemies in beat em up style gameplay which is fun. There's also a lot of customization to be done trying different skill and hero combinations (as skills of different heroes can be used simultaneously to create different combos) and collecting different costumes which give different bonuses. Also adding to the variety is the different worlds you visit which are all themed after different areas in the marvel universe and each have their own distinct feel these worlds include Murderworld, Asgard, Mephisto's Realm, Valley of Spirits and a lot more.

Story: 8

The story isn't too different from most superhero plotlines as Dr Doom and the Masters of Evil (which consists of most supervillains you could think of) attacks the S.H.I.E.L.D hellicarrier and Nick Fury calls upon assistance from a ton of Marvel superheroes to stop the attack. After that the story is more or less defeat Dr. Doom and the Masters of Evil which means going to different worlds and taking on iconic villains big and small from the marvel universe along with the occasional twist. It's nothing too special but it did keep me somewhat engaged when playing and I feel it fits the game well. I also feel that the representation of the heroes and villains are fairly spot on though I wish they would've put some more dialogue exclusive to each hero in different moments of the story.

Depth: 8

If you just play through the game going through the different worlds to try and complete the storyline, the game isn't too long though not too short either. However there is quite a nice amount of side content to engage in. There are some side missions you can get from talking to people in the hub world before each mission however these usually only consists of finding particular items which you'll come across when playing through the game normally. Instead the main bulk of side content come from things like simulator discs which are extra missions you can find while playing through the game which lets you play through an instance of each heroes past. There's also a lot of concept art and trivia to collect, not to mention that the game can warrant several playthroughs due to the large amount of characters available, these include famous characters like Deadpool, Daredevil, Spiderman, Iron Man and The Fantastic Four (each member being it's own character of course). And some more obscure characters like Moon Knight, Blade and Spider Woman along with a lot more. A lot of the characters are also unlocked as the game progresses as well as some requiring you to complete certain side tasks to get them such as in the case of Silver Surfer (requires you to complete all the simulator disc missions) or Daredevil and Black Panther (Requires you to find a certain amount of "medals" hidden through the different levels). You can also purchase some characters as DLC like Hulk and Nightcrawler, it even includes some of the villain characters such as Magneto and Dr. Doom himself. There's also different costumes that can be unlocked such as the Classic Wolverine costume or Symbiote Spiderman, which besides changing the appearance of the character also offer different bonuses. So safe to say the game will keep you busy for a while.

Difficulty: 7

I'm basing this category on the normal mode as that is the only mode I've played through, in which I didn't experience too much trouble throughout most of the game. The game does feature puzzles however like previously said they're extremely simplified and even when the game tries to throw some more clever puzzles at you they're usually made overly easy. The minigames you play through during boss battles as well can also be a tad easy but there's always a hard mode for those craving a bit more of a challenge. On the downside unless you unlock it through a cheat (which I believe will disable achievements for the game) you'll have to play through the normal mode first to unlock it.

Overall: 8.1

The game is just simple fun. I'd recommend this game to anyone who likes beat em up games and/or the marvel universe. This game isn't perfect by any means, while it has a few short comings and it's not going to win any game of the year the awards, it's still a great game. I'd especially recommend getting it now since it's fairly cheap and easy to get on sites like eBay.

Anyways this review took a while mainly because I wasn't sure what game I should review next but it's here now, So please rate it, comment on how I can improve it and/or what I did well and I hope you'll read my next review!
