The argument is that the government has the authority to tax those under it. America cannot tax Switzerland, etc. If churches were required to pay tax, the government would be asserting that churches are under it's authority. Worse more, if churches are under the government's authority, they are also under government protection, just like everyone else who pays taxes. All sorts of church vs state problems arise. Many, many, manymanymanymanymanymany problems are removed if the government simply abstains from taxing them.

However, I hate how some churches are worth more than $70 million (Willow Creek Community Church). I think there should be a means to tax churches due to excess. The little church in nowherevile shouldn't be taxed, but the ones in excessive luxury are abusing the fact that they are not taxed.

Txgangsta: but then you create the problems of definition. What is luxury? What is excess?

Of course, those mega churches are obvious examples but where do you draw the line?

Also, just the fact that they are tax-exempted
does give them some state protection/obligations as they can't be active politically. In short: just abolish/severely scale down taxes to avoid such questioning

janus :

But big government is good. So higher taxes are necessary.

And I don't know the definitions of luxury or excess in this context. I was proposing something vague so that a reader might establish their own idea of luxury or excess. Those things can be fought over by politicians. The actual numbers don't concern me.
