Super Mario Bros 2

Mario Bros 2. Review.
Well here I am once again. I have not had many reviews well any at all for quite a while now but I decided to write one and see if I can get myself back into the writing session that I had before. If you missed me I hope that I will be around a lot more. Though if you did not too bad, I am back and hopefully here to stay. That being said during my break I played through a lot of games so I should have a lot of reviews coming up. Here is my first of the bunch and it is Super Mario Brothers 2 for the NES.

First I have to say that right of the bat this is one of the few games that I have actual nostalgia for. Being younger than most people the games I have nostalgia for are newer then the games others have nostalgia for. Well when I got this game it was new to me. So in a first I will tell you guys about a little back story into my first Mario game.

Christmas morning about 6 AM. I cannot remember the year but that does not matter I was young and I felt like I could take on the world. The Game Boy SP had come out about a year before and I had wanted the game for quite some time. I was almost sure that I would get it for Christmas and I could not wait to get it. I got all of the presents that they set aside for me and opened them. I went through all of them in a timely manner as I did not want to look like I knew what was coming. Then after opening my gifts mostly clothes and a few books I sat there. I knew that I put my hopes up for nothing. Though I was happy with what I got. Then my mom said looks like there are two more under here. I immediately perked up. I put my hands out and the second that wrapping paper touched my hands I ripped it open. I found that there was newspaper and packing tape. I ripped that open. Then there was duct tape and more newspaper. This cycle went on for a long time then finally I saw the top of the box. I saw the Nintendo symbol and flipped. I knew I had to get in that package. I had to know what ... Read the rest of this Review

Metroid NES Review
Well this is what many consider to be a classic on the NES and frankly I can see why. Let’s see if you can guess the game. You can go left. You jump and have an arm cannon. You play as a girl but you do not know until the end! If you were not aware the game that I just described is the original Metroid. So without further ado let’s get into it.

I am going to start off this review by saying there is actually a story. While it is minimal it is a story none the less I can actually tell you all the text that you get as far as story goes. Here is the text:” Emergency Order. Defeat the Metroid of planet Zebeth and destroy the Mother Brain the mechanical life vein. Galaxy federal police. M510.” So from the first game you are already a bounty hunter and you are already going out to kill some of those Metroid as well as your enemy that is Mother Brain. The after you beat the game you get this message: “Great!! You fulfilled your mission. It will revive peace in space. But, it may be invaded by the other Metroid. Pray for true peace in space!” That is cool and all and for an NES game that is actually a good chunk of story. They left the story open and they do want to just because they do keep it open for the second game. I heard that there is quite a bit more story in the game manual especially for the NES. I read through that it and it was actually fairly interesting. Though this is a game review so I must say that the story here is ok. I have to say that it is better than having no story at all which is the norm for most of the NES games of the day.

The game looks ok I guess. There are a lot of graphics glitches that take away from the experience by quite a bit. There will be times that if an enemy is on the left side of the screen and you kill it some of its body explosion can come up on the right side. This seems really cheesy for today’s standards and almost a bit sloppy. Though when you think of how ... Read the rest of this Review

Shinobi SMS Review
First of all I have a small little thing that I must say before reviewing the game. I did not actually beat it. This will tie in later but I have to get it on the table now. I have also never played the original arcade port and did not know of its existence for some time. Shinobi was an arcade game that was made in the late 80’s. It was a hit and Sega and the team decided to bring it to the home consoles. Did it survive on its way there? Read on to find out.

Honestly I did not know that this was an arcade game when I started it up. Though looking back on it the game did fell very arcade-ish and the game is hard. That is actually my first point and boy is it a big one. I have played hard games. Just this week I reviewed Contra, Contra is a really hard game, I can beat Contra. I can not beat this game. I tried over and over again but the thing that got me was the bosses. They felt almost cheap to me as they would make it so you could attack them about once every couple minutes if you were lucky and fast and really good at avoiding what they were throwing. I was doing my best but it ended up that I was dyeing far more then I should have been. I hate the bosses in this game as they usually steam roll you like there is not tomorrow. I am fine with that when there is actually a way to beat them but in this game more often than not I felt like there was not a way to beat them. Luckily the main game is far more forgiving on the difficulty scale. You run around and you can get through it pretty easy especially if you have played games like Ninja Gaiden. All though they should not be compared as they are two totally different beasts. Both can sicken you with their bosses but in Ninja Gaiden the stages are much harder where as in Shinobi the stages are not quite as hard. Just the bosses the bosses just make you want to scream. Though the stages are still not easy, but for me it is standard old school arcade port hard that I have come to love over the years.... Read the rest of this Review
Wonder Boy in Monster Land

Wonder Boy in Monster Land SMS
DISCLAIMER: Well this is my first Sega Master System game that I will have ever reviewed as well as the first game that I have actually played for the system. So with that being said if I say something comparing it to something else and it is wrong, (not when stating my opinion), then please call me out on it. I do not want to make false claims because I do not know the system as well. Well on with my review.

Today I am going to talk to you about Wonder Boy in Monster Land. This is a plat forming game for the Sega Master System (SMS) and the first SMS game I have ever played. The game is in many ways very similar to Zelda II on the NES. Except in that game you have an open world to explore and in this one you are on a straight path though there are still shops and other things that you can buy. I will go more into the game play in a bit but first I would like to talk about how this game looks. The game has a very unique look to it. It is similar to a cartoon with all the bright colors and the different enemies. The game looks a lot better than most NES games and it also looks better than some of the other games on the system. Something that I really like is that this is one of the only retro games where as you change armor you actually can see a change in the characters appearance. The best armor is pink. I think that is weird as he is wonder boy but whatever he buys it from some really shady looking individuals because you actually get to see up close the monsters faces that you buy stuff from. This is actually really cool as you get to see inside of the shops and all that jazz. Makes it cool to see the wizards or lizards or other people you buy stuff from. Outside looks good too, everything has a cheery look so nothing is really scary. I have one minor complaint that is more of a pet peeve or something than anything else; the way your character runs before you get a sword. It is hard to explain but it made me laugh and also a little annoyed at the same ... Read the rest of this Review

Contra Review. NES
Sorry for the late review I have been quite busy with other more important matters this week and the one before it, on with our review of yet another classic.

This game is synonymous for being one thing: HARD. This is a true fact. But I think that it shows more of why it is a classic for that very reason. Now a day’s most games are fairly easy if you do not get it the first time you will probably get it the second time. This game is not like that. If you do not get it the first time and you do not get it the second time you better memorize some patters because otherwise you will not get it the third time. This game is all about patterns and just being good at the game. This game requires skill especially since you only get three lives. That almost seems cruel the first time you play it and do not even get to the boss before they are gone, but I can see why they did it. This really does make the game not only longer but more fun. You trudge on restart after restart just a bit each time. This slows down the pace but really you will not notice. Though if you are a wussy you can enter in the infamous Konami code and get thirty lives. This makes the game a lot easier but less intense in my opinion. When you have three lives you hold them dear, when you have 30 it does not even matter anymore. I like the addition but play the game without it I dare ya.

The game looks pretty good. Old for sure, but it looks old in a good way. As opposed to some NES games that look and play outdated that is not the case here. This game looks like it is new, partly because there are so many games that are going for the same 8 bit shmup kind of game right now that it would fit in perfectly. I love how they have the flips for each of the jumps similar to Metroid except they look far better here. The different guns look good too and unlike many other games of the day this game does not slow down quite as much as when you get a whole ton of enemies as well as bull... New Retro Mario Bros

New Retro Mario Bros
What do you think when you hear the words New Retro Mario Bros? Do you think of New Super Mario Bros? As in the largely successful game for the Nintendo DS that was later more or less ported to the Wii? Well I am sorry because this is not that game. This is more or less a graphical overhaul of the first Mario game (Mario Bros.) to look in the same way that the games on the DS looked. Overall they did a pretty good job. The graphics actually look pretty good.

The game looks really good and almost the same as the DS game. The only major difference is the fact that the character models are not polygons. Though I am glad that they did not try to go down that route just because Super Nintendo plus polygons typically makes the game look really bad, case in point Star Fox. If they would have made the characters polygons the game would have ran slower and looked messier. So instead they went with what I believe are their own sprites. They look pretty good too; Mario resembles what he does in New Super Mario Bros, as well as every other sprite. The backgrounds look exactly the same. They lack the same depth that was in the original New Super Mario Bros but they are a far step up from the original NES game. The graphics look nice and they do look like what I would think of the New Super Mario games if they were to be put onto the Super Nintendo. I just do not like how Mario sprints but that is not something to get down about.

The game has the same game play for the most part. Except for the controls are not as tight as I would have hoped. They feel almost loose; which is not a good thing for a precision based game. I am not saying that the game is broken with the controls by any means but they do need work. I would have either liked them to try to make it just like the original in terms of control; rigid, precise, and also easier to do pixel by pixel movements. Or do it like the new one; a little bit slippery, still very tight, does not allow for pixel ... Read the rest of this Review
Kirby's Adventure

Kirby's Adventure NES
Kirby’s Adventure may not have been the first Kirby game in Nintendo’s long running franchise of largely successful games but it is a cornerstone of the series. Kirby’s Adventure is one of the key games in the NES library. It mixes platforming as well as some other elements such as action. Unlike other games where it is all laid out for you immediately Kirby’s Adventure is different in the sense that you more or less choose the way you want to play. All in all Kirby’s Adventure is a classic.

Kirby was a late NES game. This might explain why the game still looks beautiful today. By the time this game was released programmers knew how to make their games look good and this is a full example of that. Kirby’s sprite is bright and vivid, as well as the backgrounds actually look like they are back there, and there is actually something back there. I appreciate that because in many games of that time backgrounds were typically overlooked and there was just blue sky. This is not the case in Kirby as you have a space background, a grass background, as well as many others. The game looks great. Enemies have the same level of detail as Kirby and so do the environments. There are sandy pyramids, forest like jungles, and weird creative wonderlands. When the foreground and background meet in this game it is something of awe. I love how this game looks and would go as far to say the best looking game on the NES by far.

But does the game control as good as it looks? More importantly is what you are controlling worth doing so? I have to answer a big yes on both of those. Unlike most NES games this game does not have that tight feeling that feels like it is constricting movements pixel by pixel. With Kirby you feel like you have complete control as well as he has a floatsy feeling. This makes sense as you can fly with Kirby by simply holding down the up button. This and eating monsters for powers is one of the key sta... Read the rest of this Review

Texas Chainsaw Review Atari 2600
WARNING: The following review is not meant to be taken all too seriously. The game is bad and I am making valid points but some of the things said are there just for comedic effect. You have been warned.

Well I decided since I played a luke warm game for the last review the only place to go from there is down. So that is what I have done. I mean far down too, like Texas Chainsaw Massacre bad. Wooh, here we go. I have to warn you I may just rant, just a little bit.

So you play as the villian from the movies. Leather face. As leather face you are on a rampage to kill everyone that you see. So you are running through what appears to be a happy forest and when ever you see a woman you kill them. This leads me to my first little rant. Why women? Not one time do you ever kill a man. They are always girls in skirts and a pony tail. What is up with that?

If I am correct there are men that die in the movie as well? Not only is there men killed but also there are never that many people that die in the movie. If you are good at this game you massacre hundreds and hundreds until one of the people that you are trying to kill kicks you in the butt after having you chainsaw run out of gas.

Speaking of the chainsaw, is that what that thing is? You have a blue thing sticking out of your body that seems to be rotating. I mean I know that they had limited graphics back then but this is not even really trying is it? Not only that but you get more or less attacked by: "skulls" "wheel chairs" and "fences" I put these all in quotes because I can not even tell if that is what they are supposed to be. Not just that but like I said before you are outside and trying to kill all these women. That is not really what happens in the movie either. Well at least not for the whole entire time. Why did they choose to make this game more or less a side scrolling shooter without guns? The only good sprite is the classic Atari back grounds with a house and ... Read the rest of this Review
Breath of Fire

Breath of Fire
This weekend I decided to go back and look through a list of the "best" RPG's in the Super Nintendo's library. I was looking through and thought that I had played almost all of them when I came to a game I have heard of but never even touched in my life. Breath of Fire. I started playing it and was disappointed at first but after the first few bits of story I really began to enjoy the game.

The story is actually ok especially for someone like Capcom. I did not expect much but I did not get much either. Here is how the story goes. The game starts your hero's town being attacked by an evil group of People called the Dark Dragons. Naturally you are the Light Dragons and they do not agree with each other. So there is a girl who is a strong Wizard named Sara that attacks the evil man who has come to kill all the people in the town. Sara fights a man named Jade and she does not come back after turning you all to stone for protection. When you are not stone anymore the evil men are gone and you and your friends remain. This is where the story starts and really it was pretty good. The story though is about as basic as it gets. You do not really know a whole lot and it really does not suck you in all that much though I did want to know what happened next. I enjoyed some of the things that I was introduced too in this lengthy adventure. I am sure that you would like it too.

Destroyed city

The graphics also look really good for the SNES. The sprites are bright and vivid but I have to say that many of the back drops fall flat to me. Especially because a lot of the game takes place in very similar looking spots. The forests, the castles, the towns. They do not do much to differentiate from one another. The only really different thing is the layout of each one. I like all of the other sprite work though. Characters have faces in the men... Read the rest of this Review

Super Mario Bros. NES
Well, here we are. The first major plat-former on the NES and boy is it a big one. This game shaped many kids lives when it came out bundled with the NES. They got this and duck hunt and I will assure you that duck hunt was the lesser played of the two.

The first thing I have to tell you is that the game is NOT easy. I have played through this game many times on many systems and they all still kick my butt. I love the game though, the game has that mix that is just right between so hard you want to quit and just hard enough that you want to go on. The only bad part is no saves or anything that we are accustomed to now. That is why the 1-UP trick has became so famous. Though after you have played the game as many times as I have you can speed run the first few levels without much problem at all.

The reason that this game is so famous is the music. The music has been remixed orchestrated and dozens of others things in the past 25 years after the release of the game. Nintendo knew what they were doing with the songs, the castles sound a bit scary, underwater is nice and floatsy, and up above ground it is catchy. All of the music is good and I actually have it on disc and listen to it quite often. Luckily the game play matches the sound quite nicely.

Mario is mario... He is the Godfather of the modern plat-former and rightfully so. The games he has been in have many times tried to be imitated and many times have failed. The game consists of 2 things. Running and jumping. You must be thinking that it would make the game really shallow but it does not. The game is very fun and you can do hundreds of things just running and jumping. You have to jump over turtles sprint to get to platforms and also jump to get some shrooms. The game requires twitch reflexes that are helped by the fact that the game is spot on with tight control. Has not been better before or after.

Donkey Kong Country Review
Seeing as Vizzed is going insanely slow I had to write my latest review in a note pad and then transfer it over typing so please excuse any errors that there is as far as spelling or grammar. Today I am going to review one of my favorite games of all time: Donkey Kong Country. I am planning on doing a three part series where I review each game and tell you what I think over all about the series as a whole. I also might add a third in which I play Donkey Kong Country Returns and tell you my thoughts on that game. But without further delay we should get to the first game.

Donkey Kong Country was a game that was developed by Nintendo but really Rare made pretty much the whole game. At the time the game was made though the company was still Rare Ware and was one of Nintendo's second party developers. Now the company belongs to Microsoft and pretty much went to the crapper. But that is not important. All you need to know is when Rare was with Nintendo magic was made and this is one of the games full of magic.

Donkey Kong Country is the first game in a fairly long running series but this does not make it the best... The game does have it's flaws and some of them are fairly noticeable now. That is not too say the game has not aged well because ultimately it has! Though the graphics tend to glitch.

I do not know if this is how it was on the original system or if it was just the RGR bugging out but when I played the background and foreground would sometimes screw up, and switch. Though for the time the graphics are wonderful! The "sprites" for Donkey and Diddy look lively and cartoonish. I love the whole art style of the game. The dying animation and everything else really makes this game stand out. The reason I had "sprites" in quotes was because the game is in a pseudo 3D world. The team was experimenting with 3D and polygons and that is what most of the enemies and Donkey and Diddy are.

There are a few problems I have with... Read the rest of this Review
