Hollow Knight

hollow knight review
Hollow Knight is a 2d platformer with an open world or Metroidvania. You play as an unnamed bug, who comes to the ancient city in search of adventure and treasure. The story is intentionally left unclear, which makes it hard to describe what this game is about. After a brief tutorial sequence, you basically have no "goal". So you can just explore the dungeons. The game offers you a big open world to explore, though some of the paths are locked off until you beat a certain boss and get an ability, which will allow you to progress.
Gameplay is very similar to other Metroidvania games, though there are some new ideas mixed in. If you want to get a map of the area, you would have to buy it first, then if you want to see items or characters marked on the map, you will need to buy those markers and put them on the map. Also, the map always comes unfinished, so you have to finish it yourself, by finding new areas and then returning to a checkpoint to mark the new areas on your map. The game takes a few famous mechanics from Dark Souls. Like checkpoints, which respawn enemies after use. Also when you die, you lose all your money and you have to come back to that place to get it back, but it also adds a new thing - your dark phantom, you have to defeat it to get your money back.
I can't stop comparing this game to Dark Souls, the mood of the game is almost the same. Everything is in ruins and those left alive are going completely mad. The atmosphere of the game is dark and grim, the soundtrack is great at conveying that mood. Graphics are very stylish and smooth.
Pros:
+ Interesting exploration
+ A lot of content (around 30 hours)
+ Great soundtrack, which you can listen even outside of the game
+ Stylish looking graphics
+ Hardcore boss battles
Cons:
- You don't have any purpose for almost half of the game
- Some bosses are too hard, literally wasted more than two hours on Grimm
If you have a lot of spare time on your hands,... Read the rest of this Review
