Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
09-24-13 07:37 PM
OBJECTION!
Phoenix Wright – Ace Attorney is the first installment of the Ace Attorney series. Originally Japan exclusive for the GBA, this game came out on the Nintendo DS, Wii, and several other platforms. It is a visual novel attorney game where the truth must be found in order to prove one’s innocence or guilt.

The storyline and gameplay is practically the same for all platforms, but I’m going to be reviewing the Nintendo DS port of this game. What makes the Nintendo DS version so special? To answer this, I must explain that the original game only had 4 episodes in its port. So the Nintendo DS comes with a special 5th episode that involves using the microphone and touch screen features. For the Wii version, the 5th episode must be bought separately from the main game; other systems might not even have the whole game released yet.

Gameplay

The first mode the player will be introduced to is the courtroom. The player will have control of Phoenix Wright, attorney at law. His mission is to convince the judge and prosecutor that his client is innocent with supporting evidence.

The courtroom system will be in 3rd person view. In this mode, the witness of the crime will testify to the court on what he/she saw. After the testimony, the judge will grant Phoenix Wright the ability to cross-examine (questioning) the witness. The player can either press the witness for more information, or present evidence that contradicts part of the testimony. This is where all the ‘action’ of the game happens.

Evidence can be checked in advance via Court Record. The Court Record holds all evidence information and character profiles that are needed to win the case. It’s important to check the Court Record frequently.

The second mode the player will have to go through is called investigation. The player will have to control Phoenix Wright and investigate any suspicious looking objects, or talk to people to ga... Read the rest of this Review
Virtual Lab
09-22-13 11:10 AM
This game is intestine popping.
Virtual lab, the last game to be released on the Virtual Boy, is considered the worst for the system. With that said, I decided to play the game myself to see how bad it is rumored to be.

From my research, Virtual Lab was developed by J-Wing in 1995 and is a Japan-only release. It is also known for its very rushed production; having ‘Nintendo’ misspelled twice (one being spelt ‘NINTENNDO’ on the box, and the other being spelt ‘NINNTENNDO’ on the cartridge) and an inaccessible password input menu.

Gameplay

The concept of Virtual Lab is similar to Tetris; there will be falling pieces that can be shifted and placed in different positions. Unlike Tetris, the game doesn’t involve filling in the gaps, but rather enclosing the pieces. Don’t get it? To put it simply, the pieces have holes that are able to connect with other pieces. The goal of the game is to connect as many pieces as possible until all sides are closed off. Once that is done, the pieces will pop and the score will be added depending on how many pieces popped. The next level will be accessed if no other pieces are left. In the later levels, multiple pieces occasionally drop at the same time.

[Breakdown]
-Similar to Tetris, sort of.
-Connect the pieces to get a high score.
-Higher levels sometimes drop more than one piece.

Graphics - 5

I suppose for a Virtual Boy game, the visuals are okay. However, the graphics can be quite…conflicting.

First of all, the pieces resemble little chunks of intestines. The intestines even go as far as throbbing throughout the game. With the name being ‘Virtual Lab’, I guess it seems to be very fitting for the image. But it sounds kind of gross when we have a cute girl on the side that accomp... Read the rest of this Review
Pokemon Identity (beta)
08-25-13 02:54 PM
The seedling of a potentially great story-based hack.
Pokémon Identity is a hack of Pokémon FireRed. The developer, VGAura of the PokéCommunity, released the first demo of the hack in January 2010. This review will cover what the (beta) hack is about and its changes from FireRed. Nearing 2011, VGAura was supposed to release the second demo of the hack; however, certain hack-related problems encumbered the process. This resulted in an announcement stating that the second demo could not be released on the promised date of January 2011. VGAura also mentioned that if the hack could not be completed, then a novel will be presented through a writing forum or a fan fiction site to reveal the entire story; that announcement was made in March 2011. Unfortunately, it is now 2013 and I could not find any updates regarding Pokémon Identity nor could I find the novel version.

Gameplay

The battle system of this hack isn’t any different from the main Pokémon series. It still features one-on-one battles with trainer’s Pokémon. They must use moves in order to deplete the opponent’s health points, decrease the opponent’s stats, or inflict status alignments. The battle is done in a turn-based RPG style system.

This hack provides different starter Pokémon than the FireRed game. The starters are: Machop, Ralts, and Seedot. While technically their stats would highly differ from one another, the creator modified their base stats and moves in order to match regular starter Pokémon. This would make battling beginning trainers and wild Pokémon easier.

I would like to mention again that this game is very focused on the storyline and character developments. So to get the most out of the game, talking to everyone is necessary. However, the implementation of dialog selection has not been added in this demo, aside from th... Read the rest of this Review
Pokemon Colosseum
08-15-13 07:38 AM
Gotta snag 'em all!
Pokémon Colosseum, developed by Genius Sonority and published by Nintendo, was released as a GameCube-only game in 2004 for North America. Like its previous games, it is a role-playing game where Pokémon engage in battle with each other. However, this installment has some major changed from the main Pokémon series.

Gameplay

The battle system of this game hasn’t changed; the player will still give commands to their Pokémon as they take turns fighting with other Pokémon. However, instead of 1v1, this game features 2v2 battles. This means that instead of sending out one Pokémon at a time, both parties will send out 2 Pokémon continuously as they take turns battling each other. Each Pokémon’s moves must be made in advance before they take any action. The Pokémon with the highest agility will go first, and the turn will end once the last Pokémon made its move. Since 6 Pokémon can be carried, so another Pokémon will be sent out if one of them has fainted in the battle field. The battle will continue until one of the trainers has no more Pokémon left to send out. The trainer that has any remaining Pokémon throughout the battle is the winner.

The game takes place in a region called Orre, which doesn’t have any wild Pokémon roaming around like in the regular series. The developers got rid of the random encounters with wild Pokémon to offer up a new way of acquiring them. This new method is what I call the ‘Snag’ system. The Snag system allows the player to capture other trainer’s Pokémon. The main purpose for this Snag system is to capture shadow Pokémon from trainers who had been rewarded for winning a Colosseum battle.

Shadow Pokémon are those who have their hearts closed off. They re... Read the rest of this Review
Dragon Ball Z - Buu\'s Fury
08-06-13 10:05 AM
Bibidi, Babidi, Buu; here's my review!
Dragon Ball Z – Buu’s Fury is the third and final installment of the Legacy of Goku series. It takes place several years after the Cell games.

Since I played this game before, I decided: why not make a review! I want to demonstrate that even girls play these types of games, *giggle*. Without further ado, here’s my review!

Graphics - 8

The graphics are good, but kind of weird if you ask me. There’s nothing wrong with the terrains and cities on the game, but the characters are a bit different. I think it’s safe to say that the characters of these games come in all shapes and sizes.

It’s a bit awkward to see little muscular chibi men fighting other muscular chibi enemies. It’s kind of hilarious when I think about it. But hey, that’s the GBA graphics for you.

The character portraits are very well done; with some characters having more than one portrait. The drawings look slightly different from the anime, perhaps a litter better. I think that the characters look much cooler in their portraits than in the anime.

[Breakdown]
-Graphics are good.
-Character portraits are very well done.
__________

Sound - 8

The music is good. It’s not as extraordinary as a Final Fantasy game, but it is pretty darn catchy. Each location has its own themes, and the best part is that they aren’t similar to each other. So you can count on hearing different themes when entering a new place.

The types of music given are great for searching and grinding, which is what the gameplay is mostly about. The sounds give off a good fighting spirit, as it should. And the sound effects aren’t bad either. It makes beating the daylights out of an enemy very enjoyable.

[Breakdown]
-Music is very g... Read the rest of this Review

Little Magic

Controls for Little Magic
CONTROLS

A button = Create bubbles.

Bubbles come in three sizes: small, medium, and large. Pressing A continuously will increase the bubble size. Bubbles will pop over time, but will pop immediately if it were to pass the large size.

B button = Push things.

The B button will allow you to push objects one space ahead without moving the character. Very useful.

Start = Pause game.

For the GBC, pausing the game will allow you to use the arrow keys to view the entire map. The maps aren't all in one screen on the GBC.

Select = Redo stage.

This button will let you redo the stage with the cost of one life point (player gets a total of 5). It's very useful since a little mistake is enough to screw the entire stage.

*Note - Functions of the A and B button for the SNES are reversed.
