Adventure Island Man this game is hard! I've been playing for over an hour and can't get past world 2.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Certainly an easier version than the Game Gear! You can actually see what your doing on the boss fights.

Mario & Luigi - Superstar Saga
04-02-21 02:25 PM
Superstar Saga for the GBA

Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga was released for the Gameboy Advance near the end of 2003. It is a different type of video game from anything I have ever played. It is a role-playing game, otherwise known as an RPG. The only other game that is similar to Superstar Saga that I'm familiar with is the first Zelda game on NES. I enjoy playing that game quite a bit, but it was more of an action/adventure style of game. This one is totally different, but every other part of this game I could rate pretty high. The graphics and storyline for Superstar Saga were very well done. I just could not get past doing some of these "Advance" moves and other things that made the gameplay less enjoyable for me.

Graphics 10/10: Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga looks a lot like a cartoon. Everything is very animated, and it looks great. The graphics of Superstar Saga remind me a lot of Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland. I would have to rate the look of this game the same as I rated that one. Both games have a lot of color to their backgrounds and sprites. This is one game, of several, I've played on the Gameboy Advance that took full advantage of the 32-bit handheld system. Like with Nightmare in Dreamland and Wario Land 4, Superstar Saga is its own game. Most of the other GBA games I've played were just ports.

This one stands out, and I guess that's why it looks as good as it does. Nintendo gave more time and attention into creating a game with a lot of color and detail to it that most of the Mario Advance and Donkey Kong ports didn't have. Long story short, Superstar Saga looks amazing!

Music 10/10: I'd have to rate the music of Superstar Saga about the same. I cannot find one dull track in the whole game. Some people would argue about that and say that they got some of the music from Super Mario 64. I've never played that game, so I wouldn't know. As far as I'm concerned, every song is its own song unlike anything I have ever heard. Cackletta's theme ... Read the rest of this Review

Another Frustrating Handheld Sonic Game!

I don't know what it is about the Sonic games Sega did for the Game Gear! I didn't mind playing the first Sonic game on the Game Gear. I hated playing Sonic 2 on Game Gear, but I did manage to push through that one and finish it without the Emeralds. Sonic Chaos is the third handheld Sonic game that Sega released on this console near the end of 1993. The gameplay is crap in this one too, and I cannot finish it! I've beaten it maybe once or twice, but I can't do it now! All the other categories for this review are positive, but the gameplay just sucks!!

It feels like you're just getting into the same problems with the last game, but you get to continue more in this one. The story felt sort of bland too, and these games were starting to get pretty tiring on this handheld system that didn't have the popularity of Nintendo's Gameboy. I can see why the Game Gear never got to be that popular. Even the first game wasn't that great of a game either, but it played way better than this one and was more original with the plot.

Graphics 8/10: I don't think Sonic Chaos looks as good as what the previous game looked. Sega did give Sonic and the other sprites quite a lot of detail, but it isn't as good looking of a game. It still looks okay, and you can tell that they were trying to give Sonic more of the same type of look he would have in Sonic 3 and Knuckles, but it just don't work for the 8-bit system. The backgrounds are about like what they were in Sonic 2 for Game Gear. They're decent but nothing amazing, and overall, this game does look pretty nice but not as good as before.

Music 10/10: Perhaps the strongest point to Sonic Chaos was its soundtrack. There isn't a dull track in this whole game just like you got with Sonic 2! The track for Mecha Green Hill Zone is my favorite. They all sound fantastic. One thing Sega did right with these games was the music. I think both Sonic Chaos and Sonic 2 are about equal when it comes to their soun... Read the rest of this Review

Batman (The Video Game)

This game is based off of the classic Tim Burton Batman film that was released in the cinemas in the summer of 1989. About a year later, in 1990, a video game was made for the Nintendo Entertainment System. I've been playing this game for a while now on Vizzed, and I can see why people like it so much. However, I don't find myself enjoying it like they do. The gameplay just plain sucks!! I swear to God, it's just as bad as Mega Man 1! It may even be worse in some ways! I think most people like Batman on NES because of all the other positive aspects of the game, but I can't rate it as high as other people did.

Graphics 8/10: Most of the areas of this review I can rate pretty high. The graphics are one of the game's finer points. The cut scenes look really cool, and the Joker looks just like Jack Nicholson who made Batman "The Movie" such a great film! I don't know what to say about the rest of the levels. They look okay, I guess, but not like the cut scenes that lead into the stages. Batman on NES is a nice looking game, but it is still 8-bit. There wasn't a whole lot that could be done, but it still is just as good looking game as the Mario Bros. games released around that time.

Music 10/10: I could not find one bland or boring track in this game! Every song sounds so good. The one for the first stage is my favorite, but they all sound really cool. Batman on NES has an amazing soundtrack which is probably why this game is so popular with people. Good music can only do so much, but it does make me want to come back and at least play it just for that reason alone. This is why I can recommend this game. It has a unique and original soundtrack that is nothing like the music in the movie. It is something entirely different, and it works extremely well. This is why the game stands out so well, and the music made it so popular.

Gameplay 1/10: Batman on NES plays a lot like the Mega Man games. It is an action/shooter/beat'em up/ plat... Read the rest of this Review

My Review of the Second Mega Man Game

Mega Man 2 was released for the NES near the end of 1988. It is one of the first games in this long running series of games Capcom released for the NES, Gameboy, and SNES systems. Mega Man 2 is a lot like the first one with Mega Man shooting enemies with his arm cannon. This game has two difficulty modes, and you have more items. I didn't feel like you had to follow a certain order with the stages either. There are some improvements that make this game better than the first one, but there still are a lot of problems that have kept me from enjoying the second Mega Man game very much either.

Graphics 7/10: I can't tell all that much of a difference from the graphics of the first game and the second game. Things look pretty dated in this one too. There may be a little more animation with the sprites in Mega Man 2, but it still looks kind of dull. The backgrounds look about the same as the first Mega Man on NES. Things haven't really improved much here. I'd just sum it up and say, that Mega Man 2 is an okay looking game, but I don't feel like it is all that wonderful and is still an early NES game.

Music 9/10: Most of the songs in Mega Man 2 sound amazing with the exception of the Heatman and Woodman stages. I wouldn't say that this game is perfect, but it is pretty close to it. The first one had a nice soundtrack, and this one does too. To me, they're both about the same with the second one being somewhat better. The previous Mega Man had several levels that weren't that great, and this one has a couple that aren't so good either. For the most part, Mega Man and Mega Man 2 sound amazing with the exception of two levels.

Gameplay 5/10: Mega Man 2 is just like the first game. It is an action/shooter/platforming type of game with Mega Man shooting at enemies with his arm cannon. Players get the stage select option at first and can play these stages in any order. It is probably better to play the levels in a certain order just like b... Read the rest of this Review
Super Mario World - Chaos CompleXX

SMW Chaos CompleXX

SMW Chaos CompleXX is a ROM hack of the popular Super Mario World game for the SNES. I discovered this hack from a YouTube gamer by the name of Pkgam back in the summer of 2015. I haven't played it all that much like I have some of the other hacks of Mario World like the Lost Adventure or the Reality Project. This is a short game when compared to the original with only 3 worlds. Chaos CompleXX turned out to be a pretty enjoyable game with some interesting design. The only downside was how it felt almost incomplete without as much content or story as SMW, but the gameplay and layout is all still there.

Graphics 5/10: Chaos CompleXX is very similar looking in quality to the original SMW. Although, a lot of the sprites don't fit with the backgrounds in many of the stages. This hack just looks like a jumbled up mess in certain stages. The person who made this hack looked like they tried to bring in backgrounds from Yoshi's Island and blend them in with sprites, characters, and other background objects from Super Mario World. I don't know, it's similar to SMW but not really? These sprites and backgrounds just don't look right. Much of it is brought in from Mario World, but the placement of these environments just don't work.

Music 9/10: I have to rate the music of Chaos CompleXX the same as I would in the original game. It's basically the same soundtrack as SMW. That game had a nice collection of songs with the exception of about one or two. CompleXX follows the same musical pattern from the original with the caveman theme. When Mario is riding Yoshi, the game starts playing bongo drums. I felt like both the hack and the original sounded better than Super Mario Bros. 3 on NES. The castle theme is also a good track, and that song was used a lot in the SMW cartoon. CompleXX has a great song selection to it, but there was still room for improvement.

Gameplay 9/10: Chaos CompleXX basically plays the same way as Super Mario World. It is ... Read the rest of this Review

Another Bad Game Based Off of a Great Movie

Why do they keep trying to make video games based off of some of the greatest movies from the 80s and 90s? This time Sega decided to create a game for their new Master System home console. The Master System is a console I'm unfamiliar with, but it did have some decent games on it such as: Wonder Boy. Although, this is not one of them. I used to watch the Rocky movies all the time as a kid, and when I found out Sega made a game out of them, I had to play, then I was extremely disappointed. I shouldn't have been because the Master System is an old gaming console, and Rocky is an old game. I still thought it could've been better.

Graphics 5/10: The characters and background objects look very dated in this game. It isn't a horrible looking game, but the characters look pretty stupid looking! Apollo looks nothing like he did in the movie and neither do the other opponents of Rocky's. Rocky looks sort of similar to the way he did in the movies, but he could have looked better. The background is terrible, and everything in the game looks so awful and dated looking. This really looks like one of those old arcade games from the early 80s despite it being released in 1988. Compared to the popular Nintendo games out there, Sega couldn't compete, and you can see why this game wasn't very well-known by the public.

Music 0/10: When I first heard the opening track to this game, I busted out laughing!! OMG! THIS IS ROCKY!? You get the familiar "ROCKY" logo, but the music sounds like Sega trying and failing at re-creating the Rocky theme from the first movie. MY GOD, THIS WAS SO LAUGHABLE!! James Rolfe of AVGN really made fun of the title track, and the rest of the songs aren't any better. The ones for those boring training stages are just as bad. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!? Sega ruined my childhood!! I can't get over how bad the music is in this game! I just listened to some of the songs from this SHORT soundtrack, and I can't stop laughing!!

The Karate Kid Video Game

The Karate Kid was a classic movie released in 1984 that I got into watching a few years back. I also enjoyed watching one of the sequels to that movie called: "The Karate Kid Part 2" which came out 2 years later in 1986. Not long after Part 2, LJN decided to make a video game off of this second Karate Kid film. The game was simply titled: "The Karate Kid", and it was an adventure/fighting style of game where Daniel Larusso went to Okinawa. He encounters "Chozen" who was the main villain in Karate Kid 2, and he fights his way through Chozen's thugs and a typhoon. I thought this game sucked! Plain and simple! The gameplay was boring and hard, the plot was just a bad version of the second movie, and The Karate Kid on NES was so forgettable!!

Graphics 6/10: The graphics are typical for those of an early NES game. You can't expect much here, but The Karate Kid is not a good looking game at all! It isn't completely horrible, but it's just another one of those bland/boring looking NES games from the mid to late '80s. The sprites look stupid looking, but the backgrounds aren't that bad. LJN did put a little bit of effort into making the game look sort of appealing, but they just couldn't do much with what they had to work with at the time. This was before the better looking NES classics like: Super Mario Bros. 3 or Kirby's Adventure. The Karate Kid video game came out in the days of: Legend of Zelda and Metroid, so it wasn't going to be a very attractive game.

Music 9/10: The music in The Karate Kid is one of the things I like about it. It sounds very much like the tracks in Karate Kid 1 and 2. I really liked the Far East theme for many of the numbers in this game. The bonus stages sound pretty cool and so does the title track. I don't think the soundtrack is absolutely flawless or amazing, but it is the only thing I like about this game. There are no songs that sound boring in the NES game. LJN took the Asian style of music from the Mr. Miyagi... Read the rest of this Review

Mario Chronicles: Another SMB3 Hack

Mario Chronicles is another ROM hack of Super Mario Bros. 3. It was released in the spring of 2005 around the same time that another famous hack of SMB3 was released called "Chaos Control". This one was made by "Ringodoggie". Chronicles is one of the many Mario hacks I played a lot in my early days on Vizzed back in 2013 and 2014. It is also another incomplete hack similar to SMB3 2nd Run, but this hack has a lot of glitches in it. Save states are a must with this game due to all the many bugs it has. I don't feel like this is one of those good hacks and falls into the same category that many ROM hacks and remakes fall into. Graphics and Sound 8/10: These parts of the review are so repetitive that I feel like just copying and pasting what I've already said about the graphics and sound of the other SMB3 hacks for NES. The sprites look good, but the backgrounds are pretty bland in all of these remakes/hacks of Mario Bros. 3. The music is also the same way. It is a case where too much variety hurts it more than it helps it. Some of the songs are catchy like the airships theme but some are dull like the overworld theme for world 1-1. Gameplay 2/10: The main objective in Mario Chronicles is the same as it is in Super Mario Bros. 3 and all the other hacks of that game that I have reviewed so far. The stages are still pretty short in length and fun to play through. Some of them do have the flying fish of death in them, and those are the ones that are not so fun. Although, there aren't that many of them in this particular hack, but there are a lot of other levels that have ridiculous platforming sections that are impossible. I just skip these levels with a P-Wing. You still get: card matching games, panel line-up games, Hammer Bros, Toad Houses, etc. But, watch out! These parts can be glitchy! There isn't much to say about the gameplay of Chronicles that I haven't already said about the gameplay in Super Mario 3 and many of its other ROM hacks. You also have the sam... Super Mario All-Stars (smb3 hack)

A Game That's a Hack of a Remake

The game that I'm getting ready to talk about is a game that is a hack of a remake. That remake is Super Mario All-Stars. The hack is one of Super Mario Bros. 3. All the other games in All-Stars are the same ones from the original. It has only been the SNES version of SMB3 that has been modified. Although, not all the stages have been changed, and the overworld maps are exactly the way they were in the original game. I remember playing this ROM hack in my early days on Vizzed back in 2013 and 2014, so it brings back a lot of good memories for me re-visiting this game. I figured it was about time to give this game a proper review. Graphics 10/10: All the games in All-Stars look fantastic, and that includes this hack of SMB3 as well. In the original game on NES, the sprites looked good, but the backgrounds were still pretty bland. Here, the backgrounds have been improved significantly with: waterfalls, clouds, mountains, trees, etc. It just feels like this version of SMB3 has more color to it also. Like I said in my review for Super Mario All-Stars, this game looks amazing! Music 7/10: I can't say the same thing for the music in the All-Stars version of Mario 3. I didn't like the soundtrack much to start with because I felt like it had too much variety. You have the same problem here on the SNES, but a lot of these songs don't sound as good in this version. The Dark Land theme is a big disappointment. Nintendo basically just ported the tracks over to the SNES, and most of them sound about the same if not worse from before. Gameplay 7/10: To start with, Super Mario Bros. 3 is a very fun game to play with lots of cool content to explore. The 8 worlds are very interesting and each one has its own theme. That's not all, there are also: matching games, panel line-up games, items, and new power-ups such as: the Super Leaf. In this version of SMB3, players now get a save feature which made things even better. In the original NES game, you had to keep the game turne... Read the rest of this Review

Mario Gets the Blues

This review is for another ROM hack of Super Mario Bros. 3 called SMB3 Blue Mario Bros. Everything in this hack is colored blue, but the sprite work and backgrounds look about what they looked like in Super Mario Bros. 3 on NES. About all the categories for this review I would rate the same as the original with exception to the gameplay/design of the game and the game's difficulty. This is one of those typical ROM hacks that falls into the category of unplayably difficult. I've never made it any further than world 5 or 6, and it took me about 3 and 1/2 hours to get that far! Like with SMB3 2nd Run, I have a lot of mixed feelings about this hack. Graphics 8/10: The graphics of Blue Mario 3 are of the same quality that they were in the original game. The only difference is that everything is blue. The overworlds, levels, and even Mario himself all have the blue color to them. Mario really does get the blues in this game! So do most of the backgrounds and overworld maps. In Mario 3 and Blue Mario 3, the sprites have a good deal of detail, but the backgrounds still have that bland NES look to them. Both the game and the hack are okay but nothing that impressive. Music 8/10: The music of this SMB3 hack is that same mixture of great and not so great songs. There is so much variety in both games, and this hurts them both. Most of the tracks for SMB3 and this SMB3 hack are pretty boring with the exception to the airship, fortress, and several other themes. Those tracks were really cool, but the theme for the levels themselves weren't that impressive. This is an okay soundtrack but nothing all that special. Gameplay 2/10: This is the section of the review that gets more interesting, and players start to notice the differences in the two games. Blue SMB3 has a lot of the same gameplay elements that the original game had. You get the same style of overworld maps, but they are not the same ones from the original SMB3. That was one thing I liked about this hack. Lags di... Read the rest of this Review
Kirby - Nightmare in Dream Land

Really Good Kirby Remake!

Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland was released for the Gameboy Advance near the end of 2002. I mentioned in my review for Kirby's Adventure that I liked this version better. The main reason for this was the improved graphics and musical numbers. This is one game series I never got into when I was a kid the way I did with Mario or Sonic. The experience I had with Kirby's Adventure was a somewhat mixed to positive experience. Nightmare in Dreamland is a good remake unlike a lot of the ones Nintendo did for the classic Mario games. It is one of the few ports/remakes of a video game that I enjoy more than the original, and I think that mainly has to do with the better visuals and sound. Other than that, Nightmare plays the same as Adventure and everything else feels the same to me. Graphics 10/10: Right off the bat, Nightmare in Dreamland has better graphics than Kirby's Adventure. Adventure had some pretty impressive sprites and backgrounds for an NES game, but there were some hardware limitations that kept it from being a flawless looking game unlike the GBA version. In Nightmare, the whole game has been given a facelift! All the objects have plenty of detail and color to them. Nothing in this version looks dull or boring, and the artwork is a lot better and takes full advantage of the 32-bit handheld system. This is a really great looking game for the Gameboy Advance and looks like it was made for this console!

Music 9/10: Nightmare in Dreamland has a soundtrack with a lot of variety, and in some ways this helps the game and in other ways it hurts it. Overall, you get the same exact soundtrack from the NES version, but the songs sound better on the GBA. There have even been a few tracks brought in from other Kirby games like Kirby's Dreamland 3. I like the way the music in this port sounds better than what I did in the original Kirby's Adventure no doubt, but not all the songs are all that great. The track for Butter Building is kind of dull, but most of ... Read the rest of this Review

Adventure Island 2 on NES

Adventure Island 2 was released for the NES in early 1991. It is the sequel to the first Adventure Island, and there have been some things that have been improved this time around. Master Higgins is back, but the plot is no different from last time. He still has to rescue Princess Tina (who is now his girlfriend) from monsters on this new island. There is a little more creativity put forth this time with overworld maps of each of the 8 islands of the game. A new item system was added to Adventure Island 2 as well. Despite all this, I think this is a game that is still very hard to beat, and I haven't been able to get any farther than world 4. I am going to take a look at how much better this game is when compared to the original. Graphics 9/10: By now, the NES was starting to produce some games that were pretty nice looking. Adventure Island 2 is no exception. The sprites are very well detailed and have lots of color to them. These sprites look amazing, and the backgrounds aren't that bad either. I thought this was a game that looked very animated. For some reason, it reminds me of something out of Pee-Wee's Playhouse. For an NES game, that is saying something! It's only an 8-bit game, but it looks more like an early 16-bit game. The backgrounds aren't quite that good, but it looks like a lot of time and effort was put into making these characters and sprites look very good. Music 10/10: I thought Adventure Island 2 also had a very impressive soundtrack. This is a game with a lot of catchy melodies. Many of these songs stay stuck in my head well after I have quit playing the game. This game includes tracks that are very memorable. There are so many different overworld themes. It also brings in music for the underwater stages. The underground areas also have their own theme, as do the cloud levels and ice caves. Adventure Island 2 has a great library of 8-bit NES music, and all of them are very nice to listen to while you are playing through the game. The gra... Read the rest of this Review

Master Higgins' Adventure on the Gameboy

Adventure Island was first released on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988. I felt like that game had a lot of problems due to the lack of lives and continues. Several years later, around 1990 or early 91, Adventure Island 2 was also released on the NES. It was quite an improvement over the first game but still didn't have a very good continue system. That game would be ported to the Gameboy in early 1992 which is what this review is about. I felt like this game is easier to play in a way, but there are a lot of problems I have with this Adventure Island game also. It's mainly just a port of Adventure Island 2, and the problems with ports are their lack of originality. Most of the time the gameplay isn't as good either, but I'm not sure if that's the case. It does have a better continue option. However, there are lot of things that have been downgraded from the original. This game has terrible controls, bad music, and other issues I plan on talking about in this review/rant. Graphics 8/10: As you would expect with many games that are ported over to the original black and white Gameboy, the graphics aren't as good. Adventure Island on Gameboy looks okay but isn't as attractive of a game as Adventure Island 2 on NES. I kind of have mixed feelings about this game's graphics. Yeah, the game doesn't look as good as the original, but it isn't all that much of a downgrade. The sprites have about the same level of detail and so do the backgrounds. I guess, the only thing that is missing is the color that that game had. Overall, it isn't perfect, but it doesn't look terrible either.   Music 0/10: All I can say about the music in this port is don't play it if you're in a bad mood. This game has the most depressing soundtrack I have ever heard! The tracks are just the same ones from Adventure Island 2 ported to the handheld Gameboy, and they sound horrible!! There is no originality here either, and that also is what hurts things even more. You just ha... Read the rest of this Review

Had the Potential to be a Great Game

Battletoads on the NES was released in the summer of 1991 around the same time the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo came out. Despite the fact that this is an 8-bit NES game, it has really great graphics and soundtrack. Sadly, those are about the only good things I can say about this game. There were some other strong points to the game too such as the characters and storyline, but they almost mean nothing because of the difficulty and poor game design. Fortunately, there would be other versions of Battletoads for the Gameboy, Sega Game Gear, and Sega Genesis. So, this isn't a total waste of an idea. This is the first version of Battletoads released for the NES that was made by Rare and Tradewest. Graphics 9/10: The first thing I noticed about Battletoads were how great the graphics were. I can't think of another NES game that looked as good as this one does except for maybe Kirby's Adventure. The detail put into the characters and backgrounds is like no other NES game that came before it. Maybe the fact that Rare developed this game had something to do with it looking the way it did. After all, they were the ones that made Donkey Kong Country, and that game had excellent looking 3-D graphics. Battletoads still is a 2-D game, but it is a very nice looking 2-D game. Although, in some ways it does look like an 8-bit game. The characters have detail to them, but not as much as some of the 16-bit games. There was only so much the NES could do, but this game really pushed the hardware to its limits. Music 10/10: Just the opening track of Battletoads will get you pumped up. This game sounds amazing! It falls into the same category as other NES classics such as: Legend of Zelda, Mega Man 2, etc. What really impresses me is the sound of the drums on the title track. They have so much depth to them, and this is also true for many of the other songs. Battletoads gave Sega's new game "Sonic the Hedgehog" some real competition. I think that it sounds just as good as wha... Read the rest of this Review
Super Mario Bros 2 - 2nd Run

Super Mario Bros. 2 the 2nd Run

Super Mario Bros. 2 2nd Run is another ROM hack of a classic Mario game. This is a SMB2 hack that was released near the end of 2001 about 2 or 3 years before Super Mario Bros. 3 2nd Run was released. Both hacks were done by Recovery1, and they are both incomplete. Although, SMB2 2nd Run technically is finished there are parts of it that feel like they didn't get done properly. Similar to SMB3 2nd Run, it had the potential to be a good hack because it was fun to play and all, but the fact that it is incomplete makes the game as a whole not as good as it could have been. Like with a lot of my reviews I did for other Mario hacks, I rate the categories the same as I would for Super Mario Bros. 2. It has the classic look and sound of the game I grew up with, but the difficulty is way too much to handle.  Graphics 8/10: The graphics aren't any different in 2nd Run than what they were in SMB2. The original game was released in the fall of 1988 for the NES. 2nd Run patterns itself after that game which was where Nintendo started to do more with the detail and color of their video games. The objects and sprites still look pretty dated, but compared to the first Mario game on NES, everything has seen quite an improvement.

Music 9/10: SMB2 2nd Run has an almost perfect soundtrack just like in the original game. I did have a problem with how the underground theme was reused so much. Although, even that track was still really good. This game has a lot of variety and beat to it. Many of these songs have stuck with me to this day and were remixed for the Super Mario Bros. Super Show in the fall of 1989 about 1 year after the release of this game. 2nd Run is just as good and stays faithful to the original musically and graphically. Gameplay 6/10: SMB2 2nd Run is another Mario platforming game that plays just like SMB2. The player can choose to play as either: Mario, Luigi, Toad, or the Princess with each having their own strengths and weaknesses. Once you pick ... Read the rest of this Review

Tetris (The NES Version)

Tetris was originally released for the Gameboy in the summer of 1989. It was later ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) near the end of that same year. Around Christmas in 1992, my dad and mom drove me to a Kmart that was located out of town a little ways where I picked out an NES. Super Mario Bros. 3 was the game I wanted for myself, but my dad wanted a game for himself also. This version of Tetris for the NES was the one that he wanted. It was mainly his game, and I didn't play it much as a kid. This was probably mostly because of how in love I was with Super Mario Bros. 3, and the fact that it was his own personal game. It wasn't really until I started playing this version on Vizzed that I got very familiar with it. I have to say, in most ways it is an improvement over the Gameboy version, but it still has the same problems that version had. Not much other than the graphics and sound have been improved, and that's about all there is to say about this port of Tetris.   Graphics 7/10: It would make sense that the graphics would be better on the home console than on the handheld one. It does have more color to it this time around, but it still has few parts where these colors really shine and stand out. The cutscenes are the only parts of the game that look very nice, and they are quite an improvement with more detail and thought put into the characters. When you clear some of the stages on level 9 of the B-type game, characters like: Kid Icarus, Link, Bowser, and Samus form a band this time around. This is a touch that gives more life to this version, and the other scenes with the rocketships look better also. Still, you have the same bland background of the playing field. Although, in this port it doesn't look quite as bland and uninteresting. This time, there has been color added to the shapes, but why wouldn't there be color? After all, this is an NES game not a Gameboy game. Overall, this did make for a better looking game than befor... Read the rest of this Review
Metroid

A Different Type of Nintendo Game Similar to a Popular Movie

Metroid is another classic, old school NES game released sometime in 1986 or 87. It is an action/shooter type of game that is kind of like a combination of Mega Man and Legend of Zelda. It focuses a lot on exploration, but you also get to shoot at enemies and find weapon upgrades along the way. You control Samus Aran as she travels through a space station on the planet Zebes. This game has a totally different storyline/characters than any of the other Nintendo games from the late 80s and early 90s. I felt like they copied a lot of these concepts from the movie "Aliens" that was in theaters around this time. Metroid was often forgotten about, and I'll admit it feels like it does lack a lot compared to The Legend of Zelda. Although, it was only the first game in the series. Graphics 6/10: Metroid is another one of those old NES games that isn't that great looking of a game. The sprites have seen a little bit of an improvement over games like Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda. However, the backgrounds are just plain boring and uninteresting. It's basically just the same black background in every area of the game! Even though the sprites are an improvement, they still don't look good either. The first Metroid game suffers from a lot of the same problems that many of these early games had. I'm sure the 8-bit NES couldn't produce games that were very attractive at the time. Just like with all of these games from the 80s, I still can't rate the graphics of Metroid that high. Music 8/10: This first Metroid game has some songs in it that are very catchy and memorable. Although, many of them are pretty generic. The Brinstar theme is pretty bland, and the Norfair theme is even worse. Ridley's theme is okay, but the themes for Kraid's hideout and the opening/closing songs are the main tracks that really stand out to me. The soundtrack is a mixed bag, but Metriod does have some music that will stick with you. There were better sounding games on the system, but I gue... Read the rest of this Review
Super Mario Bash

Super Mario Bash for the Nintendo Entertainment System

Super Mario Bash is another ROM hack of the first Super Mario Bros. game on the NES. Almost everything about this game is identical to the original. Like with Sirius Mario Bros. 1, which I reviewed not too long ago, the only categories I would rate differently are the gameplay and the difficulty. The graphics, music, plot, and content are exactly the same. Mario Bash is harder than the original SMB and in my opinion, isn't as much fun to play. Graphics 5/10: Graphically, Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bash are not good looking games. The blueprint for this hack is a game that was never known for its graphical appeal. These two games look dull and lifeless with ugly sprites. I've seen worse looking games, but both the hack and the original SMB do not look good. The backgrounds aren't very appealing either, but it was 1985, and Nintendo was still experimenting. Music 7/10: I rate the soundtrack for Mario Bash the same as SMB. It is one with some good 8-bit NES music in it, but it doesn't include that much of a song selection. The problem isn't the quality of the music, it's just the quantity. I don't know how many tracks either game has, but neither one has that many. There are only 3 or 4 songs in the whole game, but they are fairly decent if not good in quality.   Gameplay 4/10: The goal of this SMB hack is the same as in the original. Mario has to reach the flagpole at the end of the level before time runs out while avoiding enemies and bottomless pits. In Bash, there seems to be a lot more of these to have to avoid, and Mario isn't given as much time to complete the stages like before. The challenge has been increased somewhat for this particular hack. The Mushroom and Fire Flower also make a return, but Mario can still only take one hit after getting either one, and after that, you lose a life. Like with Sirius Mario Bros, this hack contains pipes that will take you back to the beginning of the stages and even some that will take you back to... Read the rest of this Review
Kirby's Dream Land 2

My Review for Kirby's Dreamland 2

Kirby's Dreamland 2 was released for the original Nintendo Gameboy in the spring of 1995. It is the third game of the Kirby trilogy and is very similar in layout to the previous game (Kirby's Adventure) on the NES. This game introduces the animal buddies as well as the return of Kirby's copy abilities from before. In some ways, Kirby's Dreamland 2 feels like a port of Kirby's Adventure. Many of the sprites and backgrounds look the same. The soundtrack is different, and the gameplay is more involved. King Dedede returns but is possessed by an evil spirit. I'm not all that familiar with this game, but it is one worth discussing.   Graphics 6/10: Like I mentioned before, Dreamland 2 is almost like a port of Kirby's Adventure. The sprites and backgrounds are pretty much identical to those in that game, but they don't look as good. Overall, I feel like this is kind of an ugly looking game. The life just isn't there. It isn't like the previous Kirby games. I can't really describe it, but the backgrounds just don't look that good to me. This game looks like a port instead of something original. Everything looks like a dumbed down version of Kirby's Adventure and Kirby's Dreamland. Music 9/10: The music for Kirby's Dreamland 2 isn't that bad. About all the tracks are new and exclusive to this game. There are very few that are ported over from the other two Kirby games. I like the soundtrack in this one. I'd say it's about as good as the music in the first Gameboy Kirby game but not quite. Most tracks sound great, but there are a few that aren't so great and even some that have been ported over from the other games. This soundtrack is a good soundtrack, but it isn't perfect. Although, it does have some great Kirby music in it especially towards the end of the game. Gameplay 10/10: Some of the copy abilities from Kirby's Adventure make a return for Kirby's Dreamland 2. The ones that make a comeback are: Fire, the Fireball, the Cutter, the Stone, the Parasol, th... Read the rest of this Review
Super Mario Bros 3 - 2nd Run

Super Mario Bros. 3 the 2nd Run

Super Mario Bros. 3 2nd Run is an incomplete ROM hack of Super Mario Bros. 3. Worlds 1 - 7 have been modified from the original game. When you get to world 8, it is basically the same levels from the original SMB3. However, this is still a pretty fun game to play overall, and it feels a lot like the game I was familiar with as a kid. It's disappointing that Recovery1 didn't take the time to finish this hack. There are a lot of cool concepts that never got done. The storyline feels unpolished, and it probably would have been a great hack if everything would have carried over to the very end. Graphics 8/10: The next two categories of this review are exactly the same as the NES version of SMB3. Mario 3 2nd Run looks just like that game did. The sprites have quite a lot of detail to them, and the game looks pretty colorful. Although, like with SMB2, the backgrounds feel bland and dated. You can tell this is very much an 8-bit NES game but one of the better looking ones. Music 8/10: The music also has some of the same problems. There are a lot of nice songs in SMB3 and SMB3 2nd Run, but both games have too many of them. This soundtrack is guilty of having too much variety. Some songs are wonderful and others sound boring and uninteresting. The music is a mixture of both, and that's why it is a good soundtrack but not a great one. Gameplay 7/10: The same things that made SMB3 a fun game to play make SMB3 2nd Run an equally fun game to play as well. The item selection is still there and so are the short stages that don't drag out so much like the way they did in other Mario games. This hack still consists of quite a lot of levels but not as many as in the original. They are still fun to play because of their short length and challenge. The card games make a return as well. There are quite a lot of bonus prizes to be won here. Each world has the same theme as it had in Mario 3. Although, there are some differences. World 7 is a cross between Pipe Land and Dark L... Wario Land 4

Best Game of the Wario Land Series

In my opinion, Wario Land 4 is the best game of the Wario Land trilogy. I rate every category a perfect 10 including: the graphics, music, gameplay, storyline, and content. I would have to say that this has to be my favorite game on the Gameboy Advance, and for the most part, one of my favorite video games ever! It is right up there with great classic games like Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Bros. 3. There is a lot to talk about with the fourth game of the Wario franchise. Graphics 10/10: Whenever I reviewed Wario Land 3, I talked about how animated the graphics in that game looked. Wario Land 4 looks even better on the 32-bit Gameboy Advance. The sprites and backgrounds have even more detail to them than that game had. Wario Land 4 looks a lot like many of the Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z games. It was released in late 2001 whenever those games were very popular. This fourth Wario game looks almost like a cartoon! This looks like a game that was perfectly designed for a handheld gaming system that was fairly new at the time. What a great looking game! Music 10/10: The soundtrack of Wario Land 4 has the most variety to it of any other video game I have played so far. The music is catchy and fun to listen to from start to finish. The musical numbers are also a big part of what gives this game that animated feel, and it sounds very cartoonlike. I like how in some of the songs you can hear a girl singing in Japanese. Wario Land 4 sounds very much like a Japanese anime! The title song is also one of my favorites. The only way to experience the music of this game is to listen to the soundtrack in the Vizzed Video Game Music Room (or play the game). I think it sounds better than the classic Sonic games! This has to be one of my favorite parts of the fourth installment. The track for "Toy Block Tower" is one of my favorites. I liked the trumpet that plays in that song. Some of the others like "Arabian Night" are also pretty cool too. The be... Read the rest of this Review
Donkey Kong Country

A Far Cry From the Original and a Horrible Game in General!

Donkey Kong Country was a game I played on the Super Nintendo some when I was a kid. I got it for Christmas in 1994. It was one of the last video games from my childhood. After about 1995 to 96, I quit playing games, and looking back, I wonder why. Whatever the reason was, I took up an interest in them again back around the start of 2013. A year later, sometime in the spring of 2014, I started playing the original Donkey Kong Country on SNES again, and this was a series I wasn't very familiar with at the time. Here is where I discovered the Gameboy Color version of the first DKC game I grew up with. Although, this is not that same game. The GBC port is a poorly done game due to it being brought to an 8-bit system from a 16-bit system that Nintendo released near the end of 2000 when I was in my final year of high school. You had the same problem with the Donkey Kong Land games, but for this one, it's even worse! I don't like remakes, ports, or ROM hacks of games that I enjoyed when I was a kid for the most part. It seems like every time a company or developer does this there are so many issues with the difficulty being too much or the game not playing properly. Donkey Kong Country for Gameboy Color has a lot of problems that make for a bad gameplay experience! Graphics 2/10: I think the graphics for this port are terrible! There is nothing about the game that is original! It is basically a dumbed down version of the DKC that I played throughout the later part of my childhood. I hate the way the GBC version looks! There are certain parts of the game that look broken, and then other parts are just poorly done abortions of the original SNES game! It looks to me like Nintendo tried but failed in making a game that was halfway decent looking. Maybe, I can be sort of generous but only to a certain extent. It still doesn't change the fact that this game looks like crap!! Music 3/10: The GBC port has a soundtrack that isn't any different from Donkey Kong Land or the... Read the rest of this Review
Super Mario Land 4

A Game that Most People Haven't Heard Of

Super Mario Land 4 is a game that most people have probably never heard of. When I first signed onto Vizzed about 5 years ago, I seen this game in the Retro Game Room and decided to give it a try. I grew up with Super Mario Land 1, 2, and 3, and at the time, I was very unfamiliar with the later games in the Mario trilogy (and I'm still unfamiliar with them). At the start of 2013, I was catching up on the video games I never played during my childhood, and I came across Super Mario Land 4. Was this a game that Nintendo released that was part of the original Mario Gameboy franchise? The answer was "No". Apparently, SML4 was a crappy pirated game that is unknown to most people and here's why: Graphics 8/10: The graphics are probably the strongest part of Super Mario Land 4. This game looks almost as good as a game like Super Mario Land 2. I considered that game about the best looking game on the system. The backgrounds and sprites of this game are very well detailed and look great for an 8-bit black and white Gameboy. However, Mario's sprite looks stupid!! What were they thinking?! He takes up most of the screen. Yeah, the rest of the game looks nice, but the main character looks like crap! This doesn't ruin things too much, but it keeps the game from being as good as some of the good Mario Land games. Music 2/10: The soundtrack for Super Mario Land sucks! It reminds me of the music in some of these crappy puzzle games like Dr. Mario. There is no variety to this game at all! You get the title track and the main level theme that is the same for every level! This song sounds decent, but it becomes so tiresome after hearing it over and over again for every stage in the game! What a boring game! I guess this is one of the reasons most people have never heard of this game. It has no soundtrack to it at all, and that's only just the beginning. Wait until I get into the gameplay of Super Mario Land 4.   Gameplay 0/10: To start with, there is no time limit i... Read the rest of this Review
Mega Man

The First Mega Man Game

Mega Man was released for the NES near the end of 1987. It is an action-style shooter game where you control Mega Man as he shoots at enemies with his arm cannon. This game is the first in a long running series of games. Capcom released a lot of these games for the NES, but there are also some Mega Man games on the Gameboy and SNES systems as well. When it comes to this first Mega Man game, there are a lot of issues I have with the game's difficulty that keep me from enjoying it all that much. This one feels like isn't as designed as well as the later games and is only for players who are experts that grew up with it. Graphics 7/10: Mega Man is an early NES game and suffers from the same problems that a lot of these types of games had graphically. The backgrounds aren't as bland and uninteresting as some of the other ones released prior to Mega Man, and you can tell that Nintendo and Capcom were trying to make a better looking game. The sprites aren't all that bad looking, but these backgrounds don't look all that great. I've seen worse looking games, but then, I've seen better. The sprites are okay, but the backgrounds look very dated. For the most part, I have to say that this first game in the Mega Man series isn't a good looking game, but it is kind of passable considering how old it is. Music 9/10: The first game of the Mega Man trilogy has a soundtrack that sounds pretty good but not as good as the later games. I have played the second game and after going back to this one, I've noticed that the tracks in this game aren't near as good. Don't get me wrong, I love the themes for the Iceman, Cutman, and Dr. Wily's stages, but some of the other songs for the Fireman and Gutsman stages sound very boring. I have mixed emotions about the music of Mega Man 1, but there are probably more good songs than there are bad ones. This is the game's strongest point, and you can say that Mega Man does have a pretty impressive soundtrack that is still pretty decent if n... Read the rest of this Review
New Retro Mario Bros

Retro Mario Bros. Hack

I have really been on a roll this year with a lot of game reviews. I've gotten to review quite a lot of games that I've been wanting to review for well over a year now. I've also had the chance to go back and edit some of the reviews I've already made. I wasn't happy with the way some of my earlier ones turned out. I don't know how many more I'm going to be able to keep doing. There are still some more new and old games I want to review and re-review soon. Retro Mario Bros. is another new review for an interesting ROM hack I have been playing for some time. Mostly, it is a hack of the first Super Mario Bros. game, but there are some other elements thrown in from other Mario games as well. About all of the sound effects come from Super Mario World. Also much of the music for Retro Mario Bros. was brought in from that game as well, but there are also many tracks from Yoshi's Island. The levels are exactly identical to those from Super Mario Bros. on NES, but they have really been made over graphically. However, this hack has a lot of flaws with the gameplay and difficulty that I plan on discussing in this review.  Graphics 10/10: The graphics are defiantly one of the finer points to this game. The sprites and characters of Retro Mario Bros. look very 3-dimensional. The backgrounds and other objects are full of a lot more life and detail. They probably have even more detail and color to them than those in either Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island. Every stage has their own backgrounds that really make the levels shine. This gives the game way more variety than the version of Super Mario Bros. from 1985. Those levels looked so dull and lifeless compared to the backgrounds in this hack. You have: cloud levels, ice/snow levels, underwater levels, castle/fortress levels, etc. Retro Mario Bros. looks even better than the All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 1.    Music 10/10: As I already mentioned, most of the music has been brought in from Super ...
