Super Metroid

Super Metroid
In the early nineties the video game world was in an all out console war, between the rival upstart Sega, and the name everybody knows, Nintendo it saddens me to think that even as a Nintendo kid in the nineties, Sega currently does not use its other IP's because Sonic is their cash cow but I digress, in 1994, Nintendo had another ace up their sleeve to blindside Sega and it was the biggest game on the super Nintendo if not the biggest game ever at the time, Super Metroid. Its no secret that Metroid is a series that draws a lot of inspiration from the alien films which is why I decided to use the tagline as a parody for this review. Super Metroid is that one game that takes everything you know about the original and improves on it a hundred fold its got a map now which in 1994 compared to the original metroid a godsend but there's plenty more where that came from coming up so lets get into the nitty gritty and dive into the dark ambient and foreboding caverns under the planet Zebes

Level One: Hades: ohhh spoiler alert. The story Super Metroid is not one would expect from Nintendo if you were a kid in the nineties you would be forgiven for thinking it was all sunshine and happy little green dinosaurs and pink blobs that suck things up like a vacuum cleaner but Super Metroid is different, when you pop in the cartridge, your greeted with sinister chords of music combined with the screeching of some unknown creature after seeing the opening words we see a baby metroid in a holding tank and as the camera zooms out, you see the bodies of dead scientists and you realize this is not like any nintendo game you ever played its time to get dark. when you start your adventure we are greeted by something very rare for early nineties video games, an actual voice clip provided by Nintendo employee, Dan Owsen (the man who provided the voice of Fox McCloud in Starfox a year earlier) and we learn that the metroids are nearly all extinct with one remaining. Right after tha... Read the rest of this Review
Star Fox Zero

Heroes don't die, they just reload.
The Wii U wan a doomed console from the start, there was no denying that a lack of third party support is what killed it, in that sense it was like Sega's Dreamcast nevertheless it has top quality video games that I am very fond of these games, inlcuding Sonic Lost World, a mixed bag for some really. The Zelda HD remakes of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess (which i also own the originals for the Gamecube and Wii.) Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze and Hyrule Warriors by the time these games were released, the Wii U was already in decline so Nintendo needed a make or break game for the system. And that game is by far my favorite game on the Wii U, Star Fox Zero, now Star fox has been a big part of my childhood when i was a freshman in high school I was mates with a bloke named Hudson. Now he is or was a gamer like myself and he played Nintendo as well his personal favorite was Star Fox (the series as a whole.) He's the one who got me into it and for that I'm very thankful by 2008 I had finished every star fox game including the rare and elusive Star fox 2 now I had thought up until 2015, Star Fox was dead due to lackluster sales but Nintendo probably won't allow it I had though Star fox command had killed the franchise for good then came Star Fox Zero and I was hyped I waited ages for something like this and when it was released my Dad got me a copy so thanks Dad now its a great game but the motion controls killed it for some and they are not that bad you just gotta get used to them its like learning to drive a car in some ways now with the forward out of the way its time to begin and as usual I always start with the story.

Level 1, the story.

I have to say I love nostalgia as much as the next person I got this game expecting a sequel to Star Fox Assault, (yeah that's right, Command is non canon in my book.) But in hindsight the story actually felt like Star Fox 64 2.0 and took everything that was great about it then made it even better the... Read the rest of this Review
Kirby's Dream Land

adorableness on a cartridge
When I was growing up in the suburbs of sydney, I was often babysat by an old friend of my mother and her teenage daughter, named Kimberly took me to her room to introduce me to a game that she would later give to me as a parting gift when I was returning to the state of Queensland and for 18 years and counting, I still have it in my possession today, I have held onto Kirby's dreamland for as long as I can remember. I was so young back then, but I remember it well and I always look back on it with fond remembrance. Today I will be reviewing Kirby's dream land and I want to dedicate this review to Kimberly, without her i never would have been a fan of Nintendo. So thank you Kimberly where ever you are. As always, I will begin with the story.

The Story: the story line in this game boy classic is very simplistic and easy to understand, King Dedede (or triple D as his henchman Esgargoon calls him a few times in the anime, kirby right back at ya ) has stolen dreamland's food all for himself, if nothing is done, the inhabitants of this peaceful world will starve but there is one inhabitant that King Dedede didn't count on throwing the proverbial wrench into his plans.

And his name is Kirby, who has the ability to inhale enemies into his mouth and spit them back at other enemies as a highly useful star projectile Kirby can also inflate his body so he can fly (bear in mind the concept of copying enemies abilities like bomb Kirby or sword Kirby do not make an appearance in this game as it was not thought of yet) Kirby makes his way through clouds and islands and makes his way to mount dedede to save his fellow dream landers from starvation and bring the greedy stuffed penguin down a few pegs, there isn't really that much to tell as far as Kirby's dream lands story is concerned but a simplistic story for a simplistic game makes a video game so easy to understand that a toddler could understand it and that's all I have to say for the video games plot, its not... Spyro: A Hero\'s Tail

A dragons quest
Ah Spyro, my late grandmothers favorite dragon and every 90s child's favorite hero on four legs. During this time we were experiencing next gen consols such as the game cube, the dream cast the xbox and the very popular Play station 2, and three of these consoles all share the game, Spyro: A heros tail or tale I forget how it was marketed as far as the name went, but in any case it may not be the best spyro game but its definitely far more better and superior to Enter the dragonfly thats for sure.

The point is is that this game to me succeeded where enter dragonfly had failed, in fact I only ever finished enter the dragonfly once and I have not touched it since but the a heros tail along and restored my faith in the series, Spyro was back and better than ever with old friends and new friends including Sparx the dragonfly. Hunter the Cheetah, Sergeant James Bird,  and newcomer, Blink the mole. each character has a different style of gameplay., Spyro is the major playable character and can charge and breath elemental attacks. Hunters gameplay I immensely enjoyed, as I played his two levels in dragonfly falls and Gloomy Glacier, I said to myself "I wish Hunter had his own game with that gameplay," as for Sparx, his levels are on rails shooting stages as you try the make your way to the levels exit while shooting down enemies.

Sergeant Bird takes over the speedway levels equipped with bombs and homing missiles as he attempts to shoot down the targets provided and finally, Blink the moles levels take place deep beneath the ground (which incidentally I always hated that was one thing I didn't like about this game) But thats enough about the introductions, now that those are out of the way lets begin with the games story.

Story: as far as story goes, this game is quite good with handling something this delicate, you gotta be gentle with the plot you know. Anyway, the story is quite simple, kiddish in a way if you will. The dragon realms ha... Read the rest of this Review
Pokemon Blue

The age of pokemon begins
Ah Pokemon, the iconic video game series with the creatures you can put in a poke ball and carry it around in your pocket. Hence the name, I only thought it was just an anime tv show the first time I knew about it but then one day for Christmas I had gotten the blue version of Pokemon and I was so psyched to start playing it immediately on my new Game Boy Colour. and eventually I learned I could play it on my Nintendo 64s Pokemon Stadiums game boy tower which was a great experience for me I just couldn't stop. And when I did it was usually to get a bite to eat. The very first pokemon I ever got, was a charmander  mostly because I wanted a charizard. This game and its counterpart, Pokemon Red version and later, Pokemon yellow, which was loosely based off of the anime, revolutionized the video game industry in several aspects including role playing games, virtual pets and having a great time trying to capture the original 151 creatures that you can put under your command. As of right now, we are about to start my first pokemon review so lets get right to it shall we. As always I shall begin with the story.

You are introduced to a quick briefing by an old professor, named Professor oak, who would be responsible for the theme of naming regional professors after trees. He will ask for your name (but strangely he seems to struggle with his own grandsons name, very odd, but when you get old I bet the mind is the first thing to go) after deciding names for the main character, and his rival, who I shall just call Red and Blue respectively, you are then shrunk down to a smaller size and enter the incredible world of Pokemon. In your home town of Pallet town (which incidentally the cities and towns are all named after colours in the Kanto region ) You are found by professor Oak who will escort you to his research lab and offer Red and Blue a pokemon each, Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. once red picks his starter pokemon of choice, Blue will then pick the pok...
