Sonic 3D Blast 04-25-11 05:15 PM |
Sonic 3D Blast - More Properly Titled, Sonic 3D Bore. The year is 1997. It was official. Magazines, news, and the entire Sonic the Hedgehog fan community was abuzz with hype. Because the next iteration in the iconic video game series had been announced. There were trailers, articles in popular gaming magazines, and the game looked amazing. It wasn't just amazing, it was breathtaking. It was completely unique, and it would be the hedgehog's first journey into the third dimension. It was... Sonic X-Treme, for the Sega Saturn. There's alot of history behind Sonic X-Treme, such as it's early test version called "Sonic Mars" that was developed for the Mega Drive... and I'd love to go into all of that, but that's not what this is about, so I'm just going to cut to the chase. The design team, headed by Michael Kosaka, was not having a good time developing the game. SEGA demanded that the game be available by the upcoming Christmas holiday season, to be accompanied by the cartoon's christmas special (An X-Treme X-Mas) but that was not enough time. With constant script reworkings and engine switches, the game was dissapointingly cancelled. But Sega still needed a Sonic game for the holiday season. And they still wanted 3D. And... they got it. But it was a load of crap. Welcome... to Sonic 3D Blast, known in other countries as Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island. Also note that upon X-Treme's cancellation, the Christmas special was renamed Sonic's Christmas Blast. The change was soul-crushing for many Sonic fans. Because they all knew from early on that 3D Blast could never live up to what was going to be Sonic X-Treme, and it probably didn't, based on early demos for the game that can be downloaded on to your PC right now. Sonic 3D Blast is a deadly combination of poor concept and poor execution. Basically, the game revolves around Flicky's Island, where small, mysterious animals taken from SEGA's early 80's arcade game "Flicky" (that also made an appearance in Sonic's first title, 1991's "Sonic the He... Spy Kids 3-D - Game Over 04-22-11 04:03 PM |
Spy Kids 3-D for Gameboy Advance The year... was 2003. A four year old EmosewaRepus is standing in a movie theater to see Spy Kids 3-D, when he is handed a pair of cardboard glasses with red and blue lenses. He is confused. He asks his mother, "What are these for? Won't they make the movie harder to see? I don't get it!" When he went into the theater, and was instructed to put on the glasses, he experienced a new dimension. Awestruck by the inexplicable magic of the 3D effects, he soon purchased the videogame tie-in for his Gameboy Advance. And then he stopped reffering to himself in the third person. Anyways, to me at the tender age of four, I was amazed by the 3D effects, and I was introduced to the "Spy-Kids" franchise which I became obsessed with. I got the video game, and I played that sucker all the way through, multiple times. When I joined viz, I wondered if they had the game. Sure enough, they did. It was an insta-buy. I played it all the way through on RGR AGAIN, and then I tracked down a physical copy and booted it up on my old DS Lite. I played it all the way through once again. Why? Mostly for the sake of reminiscing. There really isn't anything special about the game for me aside from that, so I guess my review could be a little biased. For the review I'll try my best to look at the game as just another game, rather than one that holds any sentimental value for me- because I'm willing to bet that you don't have any sentimental value for the game, am I right? :P One thing I like about the game is that it offers more than just a simple platformer. There are some levels where you race against other players, and some levels where you stomp through a virtual city equipped with a massive, hulking battle-mech. It really delivers on variety and is very unique, and I can't say the same about other video-game tie-ins. And, it actually has a plot. The plot of the game is pretty much the same as the movie, but... not EXACTLY the same. The evil Toymake... Read the rest of this Review |
Super Monkey Ball Jr. 04-22-11 04:56 AM |
Super Monkey Ball Jr. For GameBoy Advance - Review by EmosewaRepus So, I recently played through most, if not all of "Super Monkey Ball Jr." The game originally piqued my interest, when I saw the game's cover among the other games in the RGR, and I thought about how such a game could be pulled off taking into the account the limitations of the Gameboy Advance. I've been a fan of the series for about a year, owning the GameCube ports of the first AND second games in the series, as well as both iPhone games plus their iPad counterparts. I've noticed that it's aimed to a more female audience but the addictiveness of the gameplay kept me coming back no matter how hard or challenging it is, which is very rare in my case because I will easily put down a game and never play it again upon reaching a difficult roadblock. So, inevitably, I ended up buying the RGR version of Super Monkey Ball Jr. Upon starting up the game, I noticed an interface almost IDENTICAL (despite graphical inferiority) to that of the GameCube version of the original Super Monkey Ball. So, I was surprised. Finally I started up the game, and began to play. The levels, if memory serves me correctly, were also the same as the GameCube version. So the first criticism I had was that it's name, Super Monkey Ball Jr. suggests that it's a whole new game, rather than a port of the original. I was hoping to see some unique, fresh new challenges, but instead, I got a graphically inferior version of the same game I already have. Now, this is an advantage in the case of actually OWNING a physical copy, because then you can take the game around you wherever you go- but you see how in the case of an RGR rom, it really could be a waste of viz for me since I already pretty much have it. Now, the game itself, as are most Super Monkey Ball titles, is pretty tough. The first few levels are going to be pretty easy and simple, but the further you go into the game, the harder it gets. It's so difficult that I issued the game a Difficulty rating ... Read the rest of this Review |
