Desert Strike - Return to the Gulf Review by: cujocricket - 9.2/10

Desert Strike SNES Review
Cujo your friendly killer cricket is back to review Desert Strike: Return To The Gulf  for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). "The Strike Series" is by far, hands down, par none, The best "retro" helicopter shooter game series of all time. Mainly because it is the only "retro" helicopter shooter game series. Besides that fact I remember spending many of moons playing this game as a 8 or 9 year old boy, trying to figure out what it was I needed to do and how was I to do it. Now that I'm a wee bit older and can somewhat read a tad bit better, I can share to you the wonder that is Desert Strike: Return To The Gulf!!!!!!!!!

Graphics : 8/10
For the time period it did not get much better than Desert Strike. From the opening sequence and start menu, To shaking hands with "MR George Hubert Bush himself"  the graphics look great and right on the money. It really does most of its shinning in the game-play graphics department. You can easily tell "what is what" while playing, from ammo ( brown box with red on top ) and armour ( Silver box with red on top ) crates, fuel barrels ( 3 fuel drums together ), 1-Ups ( Box with a Red X on top) and winch upgrades ( Silver spool of wire). It also goes for "who is who" from friendly troops, enemy troops and civilians. Pretty much goes with out saying, If they are not shooting at you, chances are they are on your side, and need a lift if you have the room. Down side to it is that you do not get any other type of helicopter to choose, unlock, or use the whole game.
Sound : 9/10
The sound was done just right for the SNES. You can tell they really wanted to make each shot of your machine gun really pop, The sound of a missile or rocket in-coming gives you a quick chance to try and dodge if the enemy is unseen. I myself love the "CLICK" sound when I run out of ammo. Also you will never forget that you are low on fuel with the warning beep or shall I say beeps that will make you cringe and pay $20.00 a gallon for the beeping to just stop.
Addictiveness : 10/10
Yes I gave it a 10 out of 10 lets face it, The Strike Series consist of 5 games total and the game play and controls remain some what the same for the most part in all of the other games. I like how you can change co-pilots all of them have their own unique back story and skills as a gunner or winch man. Which will make you try each one of them out on all the levels.

Story / Depth : 8/10
The story itself is pulled out of even today's world news headlines. With a "Madman" in the Middle East who wants nothing more than to destroy the world. Which truly makes no sense in a video game or real life. No human who is the leader of a mass of people would want to risk losing that kind of power. Yet Mr Madman in Desert Strike sure does. You must destroy radar stations, power plants, scud missile launcher sites and other weapon sites to stop Saddam I mean Madman.
Difficulty : 9/10
This game can get very tricky if you don't know the rules of the sky. Knowing how to control your helicopter is key. If you lack in that department you will soon be shot out of the sky at the first Anti Air Missile site you come across. Once you master how to control that helicopter of yours you should be able to handle your own for awhile. Conserving your fuel and ammo crates is another HUGE thing you must master. Nothing is worse when you have just One scud launcher left to destroy and you run out of fuel and lives half way to it. Remember to watch your 6" and ALWAYS check your map if in doubt.
