When you went to high school and college in the olden days all you could think about was getting an education and bettering your life. Now theses days when you go to school instead of think about that, you mostly think about sex and other bad crap. Are Parents responsible?, partly true because parents are responsible for what content their children are subjected and aloud to watch. But I think the media is also to blame. For example, in the olden days (80's and 90's) most teen sitcoms like Saved by the bell or City Guys barley had any sexual references but shows like Hannah Montana I think have too many sexual references. All that show is about is hooking up and boyfriends cheating and other crap that Disney needs to stop spreading to little kids. The same is with other recent teen shows like ICarly or whatever. If I really wanted to see people "hook up" I would've watched Jersey Shore, Flavor of Love, or even The Real World. But its not just tv it is also music. Now more than ever there is too many sexual references and content in music. Listen to songs like Poker Face and Love Games from Lady Gaga, Toxic and Womanizer from Brittany Spears, Fireman, Every Girl, and Lolipop from Lil Wayne, and What's Your Fantasy from Ludacris. These are the few of many artist and songs that have sexual content in their music. Unfortunately this theme of having sexual content in music is growing. Now We go into movies. Movies lately have been having a lot of sexual content. Even in Pg 13 movies sexual content is growing, I mean look at movies like Bring It On or Fired Up. So any way my question to the cool people of vizzed what do think on this matter?

P.S. I hope this isn't a copy of another post.

Look at any commercial, watch any television show (or movie), find any ad you can, I guarantee you that there will be an attractive woman or man somewhere there. Every fast food commercial that I have ever seen has either a woman eating the food (or drinking the beverage) all slow and sexy like. Even the slogans all have not-so-hidden double meanings. It's everywhere.

It's sad but 100% true. Sex always sells just look at Godaddy's ads during superbowl has nothing to do with hosting and everything to do with naked chicks. Axe spray is another good one where they make it look like you will have 50 women by using their product.

I don't even watch TV anymore or movies or music. Everyone looks fake like a barbie doll especially in the media, their clothes are half off as well. Very sugar coated with sex refrences I must say

JonXMasterZZMan : "When you went to high school and college in the olden days all you could think about was getting an education and bettering your life."

You must not remember the old days well. The attitude is exactly the same in that people have always been sex-crazed, it's just that society is more open about it these days.

Oh yes. Today's society is filled with sex maniacs and they want us to be the same. Even the stuff that used to be for kids is sex filled. Take the transformers movie for example. I think parents are responsible just because I don't think they're doing enough to stop this crap.

Society has always been filled with "Sex maniacs". People just tend not to cover it up as much. It gets ridiculous when it comes to TV networks like MTV, VH1 and shows like "Jersey shore" that basically promote stupidity. But I don't think that the movie rating system has gotten easier on sex at all. I have listened to a bunch of commentaries where the makers of the film go over the things they can and cant do in order to achieve a certain rating.

I feel insulted by commercials in general and how we are all clumped together as idiots that are seriously influenced. However, I am even more insulted that it DOES influence a lot of people.

Pretty much!

"However, I am even more insulted that it DOES influence a lot of people."

That is the thing that bugs me even more. Some people are so lazy intellectually that they actually fall for a lot of the crap they see on TV. TV = FAKE! Don't believe anything you see on TV. Verify the truth of it some other way. There are so many half-truths and outright lies in advertising that it's scary. And a lot of people don't understand that.

Humans, and all creatures like sex. Sex is well liked. Put references to it in stuff, and PROFIT!

Besides, why else would Playboy be so popular?

KlawedFlaw : Playboy is not the same as what we're talking about.... if people want to view pornographic images and videos in the privacy of their own home that is fine by me. But I do not want to have to look at them in public forums when they are being used to sell regular every day products.

And while "Society has always been filled with "Sex maniacs". People just tend not to cover it up as much." I think that it is become so commonplace for sex and sexual things to occur that we're starting to get things like the gang rapes out of California and BC (in Canada ) and other places becoming more and more common place. The over-sexual media is breaking down normal moral barriers to sex-related crime, in my opinion. You can't spend as much time viewing these things without it having some effect on you. I'm not suggesting that porn causes rape.... but I think it relaxes moral boundaries among people that would otherwise not have committed the act and made it more "normal" to the other people involved/witnessing it.

Hoochman : It's been a past time since the Victorian days. Wanna know how porn was made? Well... Some Victorians were bored, and we got the first form of porn: Erotica. Before the days of women being utterly sacred and needy, us girls were beating the crap out of guys in some cultures, and beating the crap out of stupidity through art in others. In Sparta, we were the heroes of the household.

geeogree : I know Playboy isn't, but it just fit my simplistic way of saying, "Sex sells. It's like a BLT for humans."

Here's a better way to put it. You know how we share DNA with bonobos, which have sex over just about anything, right? Well... What if we showed sexual images of bonobos to bonobos in zoos? We do it to pandas as a way to get them to have sex, which is enough example that all creatures, including humans, love sex, so why not try it on the most sexual creatures we know of?

Media has been sexual for years. In the 80's, it was highly sexual. I mean... Those hair bands some of the people before my time(I'm 15) love were just selling lust songs. Just look at the Poison song "Talk Dirty to Me". In fact, half of the rock music we love is sexual. Even the Beatles have tons of sexual songs, but they were good at hiding it. Same with millions of musicians. Now if we go into the genre of grindcore known as pornogrind, which isn't made for any sort of reason other than laughs, you don't get the kind of lyrics that a pop singer could get away with. Why? Because these songs are taboos.

One band in this genre has a song about an erotic dream about poop. The same band also has a song about getting raped by elephants. This band and many others like it are not an example of sex selling, because we are afraid of the taboo. We don't want to know what lies beyond our dreams of good sex. We want to push away the idea that fetishes exist. For example, if I were to sell fart porn, it would be a niche product, because it isn't popular like normal porn is.

Now. That I'm off the porn subject, sex was already in all our beloved shows. Animaniacs had a gag about fingering. Ren and Stimpy... Well... It was pretty sexual to begin with. Spongebob was once filled with little in jokes the dirty mind would pick up. I could go on forever, but it is fruitless to. Simply put, children have been viewing shows with sexual undertones in small amounts for years. The only reason we can tell much now is because our current programming is becoming more sexual. I like a good sexual joke, but I don't want it all over the place. Probably one reason I hardly watch TV on a TV.

I think that this is painfully obvious, you can watch almost any movie that has been released in the last 3-5 years and find some sort of sexual content. Now you look at movies from 30, 20, even 10 years ago, and having a movie with a whole bunch of nakedness and perversion was fround upon and was rarely seen in movies.

Best Keep your concience as clean as you can, or charma will come with a blade in it's hand. It will strike all those who seek to gain without giving, and spare all of those who are weak and forgiving.

The most inconcenient truth isn't al gore's research. Instead it's the fact that we as a people have regressed into the people we are today as a whole. Now, everything you see on TV is either advertisements or sex, drugs, and alcohol. Maybe the one thing NOT involved is that one static channel (I know I have one) Some days, I kid you not, I will either watch this static channel or read a book instead of watching what television has become.

Honestly, yes, I had at one point not cared about this, at one point you would hear me say, "haha, sweet, half naked chick drinking a beer. That's cool." but now I just shake my head at these same commercials. It's a sad but true fact.

Sex sells.

Why? Because we as a people have allowed sex to sell. Who buys magazines with scantily clad women? Who watches girls strip for camera men (Girls Gone Wild)? Who implement sex as the front line most important thing in our lives? It's us, the people. Not to say that we are terrible people. But seriously, it's our friends, family, and occasionally ourselves who fall into the same trap time after time.

Can it be fixed? Sadly, I don't think so, because it is now an estabilished fact that people like what they see. Unless sex marketing has a huge falling out, it is something we have to deal with. =/

I do think that many TV shows/movies/songs/books etc have more sexual content in them. It's basically just the way the world moves, we get older and we realize a lot of sayings can have innuendo in them. I think that people are just becoming less straight-laced with sexuality so musicians/directors etc put more in because they can get away with it without it being censored.

I agree, I think that even our kids shows today have desensitizations of bigger stuff in life. It seems that the message of most kid-geared shows today is "do what you want, no matter what others tell you" instead of "do what is best for you." I admire shows like Pokemon and the PBS Kids shows that live up to the standards kids need to see in their shows. Pokemon has a lot of fighting, but that's tempered with a message of "love your Pokemon first." That really hits a note in me.

It's getting larger and larger to have these kinds of things in shows because that's all fat, stupid people enjoy. As hazardous as it is to children, it's not gonna go away, and it's one of those things you need to block from kids.

About 10 years ago, I got into indie (very indie..) filmmaking. And one of the things we kept running into was people, particularly people trying to give us money, were requests for more sex, more suggestive themes, more cleavage and titillation. It got quite frustrating ,especially as sex had very little to do with the film's content. Yeah...sex is the entertainment industry's number one drug. And it's quite addictive. Just my two cents.

One time I took a tour through Amsterdam. Sex really does sell.

In all seriousness, though, on to the real topic, I don't really mind sexy advertising. It's just skin. Before the 1600s, people didn't care at all about sheltering their children, and the children grew up just fine. In fact, th idea of having separate bedrooms is a very modern idea. Most of the time, entire families just slept all in the same room, which they ate in, which they lived in... And when someone was gonna bump uglies, they bumped uglies. Morals and decency do not exist. They are man-made conventions in a morally-devoid universe.

Anyways, it's only natural to do something that works.

As far as the "creating unrealistic expectations," then, meh. Sorry if I offended anyone.
